30 opinions for Valkyrie Trailer

I couldn’t even sit through the trailer. Tom can’t pull off this character. He looks like a transvestite Hitler. I will not waste my time or money to watch any movie that Tom is in. I might as well send a check directly to the cult if I watch anything he is in.

Summer 08, I DON’T think so. Didn’t they move the release date of this “gem” of a movie?

What amazes me is that Tom has not been canned by UA. Must be alot of wimps on the BOD. Look at the history and founders of United Artists–the image has been permanently tarnished. United Artists will be belly up by the time they smarten up and can Cruise.

Even UA knows that they won’t get their money back on this one. That is why TC’s next movie is with Columbia and is being directed by a Scientologist. No one other than a Sciento. will hire him or his wife.

How come Kh didn’t play his leading lady? Didn’t they change the name because of legal issues. Why are they still calling it VALKYRIE?

If I can get past the American Nazi, I might rent it. I prefer a little more realistic characters.

I think this clip is outdated. That’s why it says summer 2008, when its been pushed to fall 2008.
That’s usually a bad sign, the studio doesn’t this movie to get lost with the summer line up of action movies. They probably saw the “dailies” and thought it will do better (if that) being released in the fall. I know Sex and the City - The Movie is coming out May 2008 for the Memorial weekend and a lot of people are gonna go see that. Its funny, light, and the stars are pretty to look at.

I thought this movie was going to be horrible - but the trailer actually looks good to me.

Oh, God, he plays the SAME character in every movie he’s in. He’s really not much of an actor, seriously. It would seem as though they didn’t put much thought into the accents either! This looks like it’s going to be REALLY bad.

Isn’t he supposed to be GERMAN?! There’s no attempt at an accent. And all the other cast members appear to sound English, British or something but definitely not GERMAN. What the h e l l? Am I missing something?! Maybe I was gone that day in high school history class and have it all wrong. That’s possible. I did skip a lot of school in high school. Yes, it’s probably me!

uhhhh, that voice and accent is just tom cruise. and i have to agree with new york, that he’s not really an actor. uh-uh, his own personality is just too big to be a decent actor. no, it wasn’t just you. i’ve heard german accents and that’s not even an attempt (i thought schindler’s list had great actors and great accents too)

movie trailers are supposed to draw people to want to see the film. if that’s the best they could do, i’m certainly not going to go watch this. it’s like nazi MI without any stunts, the only thing tom’s good at. so why should i go watch this film? if i want to learn about valkyrie, it’s probably much better to read a book on him instead.

NY: I had the same thought too. No one sounds German. That is why I call Cruise in this movie the American Nazi.

Didn’t they change the name to something with ‘Rubicon’ in it because of a legal issue using VALKYRIE?

Yes, a genuine German accent would probably add to the feel of this movie. An eye-patch and uniform just doesn’t do it for me. A true actor would have studied the German language and really tried to bring some realism to this part by speaking the correct dialect/accent. Remember Meryl Streep when she did “Sophie’s Choice” and “A Cry in the Dark”? (’A dingo stole my bye-bee…’) Now there’s an actress who went the extra mile. Can you imagine Johnny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow with an American accent??

This film will definitely not win TC any Oscars. That’s one of the few things all his money can’t buy…

One of the best movies I’ve seen that had to do with German characters was the original 1960 version of Judgement at Nurenburg with the great late Spencer Tracey, Marlene Dietrich, and Maxmilian Schell (when he was in his handsome prime), and a young Judy Garland, etc. This is such a good movie, very well made. Maximilian Schell is so, so HANDSOME in this movie.

This movie is just an attempt to further “TC saves the world” propaganda. He looks completely ridiculous w/ that patch. This isn’t even rental material.

I agree with eveyone’s comments concerning the accent or lack thereof of a German accent. Yes, a true actor who was really good at his or her craft would have studied and trained and at least “attmpted” to sound like a German. I just can’t picture him as this man he is portraying. Cruise just cheapens this film.

I don’t get why everyone seems to make such a big deal of Cruise’s having no accent in this movie. Or anyone’s, for that matter. This is the movie about Germans in the German setting. Of course, if the situation was real, the characters would be speaking German, and with no accents, since it would be their native language.

So, why should they have German accents, if the movie is shot in English? I mean, I don’t remember Cruise having French accent in Interview with the Vampire. Neither Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst had it. Are they talentless too?

Is it seriously a problem for anyone?

Marion…..you’re NOT serious with that analogy are you?
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • Marion
    Jan 9, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Libra, well, why not? New Orlean, where the duo lived in the beginning of the movie, was not yet American, right? So, even if they spoke English, I’m pretty sure, the accents would be there.

And, what’s the point of German accents would be in this particular movie? To show that the characters are German? Well, it’s a movie about Nazis who live in Germany. The language they speak is sort of implied already, no?

as far as i know, interview is not based on any historical truths, like valkyrie. louis and claudia in interview don’t need french accents necessarily, since they originate from new orleans which at the time was not yet american as you say — but that’s only until the early 1800s the first part of louis’ narrative, and it wasn’t completely french as you imply. there were americans, spanish and french there during the period. and i thought the actors frenchified some things i.e. monsieur, mademoiselle, maman and the paris scenes were without a doubt frenchified. armand’s character had a european accent too. plus, i think lestat’s character would have been better if cruise had been able to pull off a slight french accent since HE is the one to have originated from france in fact (from the other vampire books).

anyways, the accent thing DOES bug me in this valkyrie trailer b/c the movie’s supposedly based on historical events. if it weren’t, i’d have no problem.

  • Marion
    Jan 10, 2008 at 9:51 am

My bad. I must admit I don’t know too much about New Orlean. I just figured from the Louis’ surname that he was supposed to be of French origin.

Still, I don’t get the whole “accent” thing in Valkirye. If the aim was to be as much historically accurate as possible, then they would have shot the movie in German. But if all actors are going to speak English, what’s the point of accents? Those Germans didn’t speak English with a German accent, they spoke German, period.

And, well, based on historical events or not, this movie is still a fictional reality. It is not a documentary and doesn’t try to be one.

IMPLIED???? Are you KIDDING? that’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.
Did you see Snatch? Have you seen ANY movie where an actor plays a role where they either live somewhere where an accent would be required…..or their character is FROM somewhere that has a distinct accent????

This isn’t the 1970’s for crying out loud, where we can just PRETEND that 7 people set sail for a 3 hour tour, yet miraculously had enough clothes for years.
    GET
    REAL
that’s why this piece of crap movie is going to bomb. When I saw that clip I laughed my head off. tc looks like he’s dressed up for halloween….the role minus an accent, yet the uniform and eye patch is a JOKE.
Heres the thing……universally the consensus on tc is people cannot watch his movies anymore because they can’t seperate the nutcase tc and whatever role he’s playing. they see tc the person onscreen.
He had a GOLDEN opportunity to change that with this movie
    FAIL!!!
I remember when Waterworld came out YEARS ago and people were making a big deal out of the fact that one or two of the jillions of extras had on modern watches or some crap like that…..BELIEVE ME…..people don’t “do” implied

As a matter of fact, I’ve seen Snatch. But I fail to see the parallel. In Snatch, characters of various nations speak English. So, yes, of course there are accents. They are justified by the plot and add to the entertainment factor of the movie.

Valkyrie is a movie about Germans. Who, you know, speak German and not English with a German accent. So, if the movie is shot in English as a whole, why on Earth the characters should have accents?

IWTV was an inadequate example, I admit, but when you watch films like Caligula - you don’t complain about ancient Romans speaking modern English, right? Romeo and Juliet are Italians, and Hamlet is a Dutchman, but on the stage the actors speak English with no accents.

Now, Cruise may very well be unable to pull of a believable German accent. My point is, in this particular movie he doesn’t have to.

Oh, damn. Hamlet is Dannish, of course. Why do I always mix them up?

what about schindler’s list? sure, it was not a documentary, per se, only a dramatization of a real person, but if i recall, the actors in that film effected german accents even though the script was in english. leo dicaprio in blood diamond? kate hudson in about adam? angelina jolie in mighty heart? cate blanchett in elizabeth? nicole kidman in birthday girl? i’m sure i could go on and on and on and on. anyways, it’s more convincing when actors doooooo put forth the effort, and can pulll it off.

i get your point marion. also, if one were to be totally faithful to shakespeare’s plays, they would have to be performed in elizabethan english. but with a lot of shakespeare’s plays, they’ve been around for hundreds of years, and generally acknowledged public property of sorts. with the time and everything, directors have a bit more freedom i think, to adapt the play to their own vision — as has been done.

with an issue like ww2, 60-65 years ago, not that much time has passed. and what about movies like schindler’s list? all the actors in that movie effected german accents? why? did it not contribute to the film? what about leo diamond in blood diamond? angelina jolie in a mighty heart? cate blanchett in elizabeth? nicole kidman in birthday girl? nicole kidman in the hours? i could go on and on and on and on. i agree, cruise might not HAVE TO effect an accent, but i’ve also never seen him able to pull off any either, based on past films. i think german accents would have helped in this film. but i think cruise can’t carry it off. pulling off accents is different from doing stunts and running fast.

in action/spy films, the hollywood versions always portray the russians with accents, germans with accents, chinese with accents….. certainly they don’t HAVE TO since it’s probably understood in the context, yet they ARE.

  • Libraesque2007
    Jan 10, 2008 at 4:38 pm

agreed. Granted some actors butcher accents (and tc certainly did in far and away) but at least they DO them. I actually heard he wasn’t capable of doing the accent so they went this route
bad choice………I really don’t think it’s going to be watchable…..the trailer isn’t even watchable….I laughed my head off with that uniform and eye patch, with no accent…. it just looks like he’s dressed for a costume party
