Valkyrie Delayed Once Again

Image details: Museum Of The Moving Image Salutes Tom Cruise served by picapp.com
Tom Cruise’s movie Valkyrie has been delayed once again. They have postponed its release to 2009, which is the second postponement for this movie. They have pushed the release date back to February 13, which coincides with President’s Day weekend.
“When an opening became available for President’s Day Weekend, we seized the opportunity,” said MGM distribution president Clark Woods, referring to Universal’s recent decision to pull “The Wolf Man” out of that slot and into April 3.
Valkyrie has had its share of headaches. The German government had initially banned the production from shooting the movie at the location where the plot was hatched and the conspirators executed. Some of the footage at the site was damaged during re-processing which then required re-shoots. And last August, 10 extras were injured after falling off the back of a truck in Berlin.
Geez! I hope after all these problems that the move to Presiden’t Day weekend helps salvage this movie. It sounds like a nightmare of an experience to me.

I know what you mean Julie about ‘a nightmare on an experience’. I hope all goes well and by its release things have cooled down. We still have tropic thunder to look forward to. Though it is not the same. Sigh.

I really planned on seeing this in Oct. of 2008. My husband and me were looking forward to watching it.. Oh well….. we will all have to wait a lot longer!!! Just hope there are no more delays!

Julie, I was wondering why did u remove the images from the old archives? Please don’t. This is a Tomkat fan site. I am sure others would still like to see the old photos once a while like me. I really enjoy looking at Suri’s previous photos (like the ones in Paris - I think she was very adorable) especially if she is missing from the media for a while.

Hey looika, I didn’t remove the images, b5media did. They had to do it on all of the blogs but I am working at replacing them with legal ones. It’s quite a chore though. :) I’ve only been able to go through about 20 posts and replace the images.

Yeah, I can’t wait to see Tropic Thunder. There are too many good cameo roles to miss it!

Are they hoping to keep putting off the fact that it will bomb?

From what I am seeing all over the internet, MGM doesn’t really want to release it. So they have chosen that week in Feb (if they let it come out then) because that is a busy family weekend and weaker movies are released around then. With the failure of Lyons for Lambs (I read it LOST 30 mil) neither TC nor MGM can afford a bust and this one looks like a real stinker. Frankly, I don’t see how it would even succeed going straight to DVD. Maybe MGM is hoping with enough time, they can sort of let it go quietly into the night.

Concerned mom: what makes it look like a stinker to you? I love anything to do with history and think that this film would be interesting. The only thing I found troublesome was that TC did not learn German or even have a German dialect coach. I am a professional voice artist and cannot believe this was not a priority. There is a fantastic film titled Downfall with Bruno Gatz that illustrates the Hitler movement. The acting is beyond incredible but also the film is entirely in German with subtitles. This made the film authentic and I feel that Cruise should have adopted some sort of German dialect to make the movie more credible.

interesting point. But I wonder whose decision it was not to learn german or use an accent.I don’t think tom should be blamed for that!I really believe he would have learned either if requested.
Jenna
Apr 8, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Not blaming him but it is his new production company and he calls alot of shots….when it comes to something creative like a adopting a German accent I believe if he said it should be done then pretty sure it WOULD be done. He is a top notch performer who commands alot of respect….if he wanted a German accent then he wouold have got one. He is not a newbie actor who has to take what is thrown at him….TC rules many a roost and that production house is his “baby”.

I am not surprised that some people would like to believe that the movie has been pushed because it is a stinker. The truth is that it is an excellent movie. Brian Singer does not do stinkers. I have watched a sneak preview and it is promising to be really nice. Flags of our fathers did so well and this movie is an almost similar genre.
I heard that they have yet to shoot the desert scenes.
I guess we all now have to wait for another year. Why oh why?

Obvious health problems? As in manufactured by the tabloids you mean.

Valkyrie still has additional scenes to shoot. Why force it’s release when it’s all hands on deck by certain critics to make sure it doesn’t stand a chance at success.
The script is brilliant and there is not for me at least a chance of Cruise and the other actors involved in it, all of whom are brilliant actors in their own right flubbing such a fantastic opportunity of bringing that story to the screen.
There are many films where the actor’s native accent is used and it did not take away from the film. For example in Gladiator(2000) which was set in Rome, I have yet to hear anyone complain about Russell Crowe(Australian) Joaquin Phoenix(American), Richard Harris(British) portraying Romans with their existing accents nor the fact that the hero of that movie is dead at the end of it.

ok Lauren, I saw Flags of our Fathers. It was indeed a wonderful movie. Very Patriotic with a moving heroic story, etc Now this movie first of all has almost all male stars and 1 lone woman. It is about Hitler who in the end kills the group trying to kill him. They are talking about releasing it in Feb on a holiday weekend right around Valentines day. First, I don’t think many women are going to interested, nor will the Jewish people. The younger crowd mostly simply doesn’t care about this subject. So who is left? I will venture out a predicition here. One of the major battle scenes that sets the movie is NOT even shot yet and the cast and crew of course have long since disbanded. I predict that MGM doesn’t want to spend another $50 mill promoting a movie that may or may not even break even. They have already spent around $90 mil and some sources say it will take another $10 million to gather everyone back and finish the film. I read somewhere that Lions for Lambs cost around $43 million to make and to date its box office is less than $60 mil I believe-that stat I am not certain of- Looks like Lions for Lambs, however, will be at a loss in the end-no pun intended- for around $30 million after promotion costs, etc

Jenna-the reason tc (and everyone else in the movie) didn’t do a German accent is because he isn’t capable of mastering an accent…period. They made the decision to do the movie accent free based exclusively on the fact that cruise has major limitations

I haven’t talked to Bryan Singer lately so don’t really know why he decided not to use accents. I don’t care about the accents though, just that it’s a good movie. It either is or isn’t and I’ll see it when it comes out and decide for myself. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Did they now? I wonder just how familiar everyone is with the actors who have major roles in Valkyrie.
Let’s leave Cruise of it for now.
Let’s not firget when Valkyrie is realeased overseas it will be dubbed in the language of that country. Therefore the Germans will get to hear it in German.

very good point Mary. I wonder if there will be interest in Germany for this story? Could be. Of course, MGM has to release it first. I guess in time we will know the ‘rest of the story’ on that. We can all speculate ’till the cows come home’ but the proof will be in its actual release and performance.

Not all countries dub - Scandanavian nations and some Central European nations (Hungary and Romania), in addition to all of SE Asia, don’t dub. And it won’t get dubbed in English speaking countries. The American accent grates outside the context of a film set in America. As for Gladiator, all actors spoke a mostly British strain of English.

Saw a post by you Jenna. Sorry. I am also a total history buff, but honestly don’t go see a lot of today’s movies like for instance, Daniel Boone with Billy Bob Thornton, altho I love him-I won’t see movies where they totally try to rewrite history. This movie to me is the same as The Perfect Storm–it doesn’t end well. Hitler wins, so I can’t see the draw for most people.

Responding to Concerned mom’s earlier post:
Hitler did not win.
The 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler failed and those responsible executed that very night, Hitler’s reign of terror however did not last much longer.
He reportedly died by suicide the end of April 1945.
What the plot showed was that even within Hitler’s own army they were those willing to stop his madness.
I could understand why Valkyrie is labeled as a thriller because those involved in that 1944 plot had sworn complete allegiance to Hitler and were going against him and planning the assassination from within.
The excellent script reviews for Valkyrie show that the writers have remained true to the story and have not rewritten history.

OK Mary, thanks for the history lesson. I am fully aware of how the war ended. I was only speaking of the subject in this movie. The men tried to do a brave thing, but in the end were executed. I appreciate you talking to me as if I am an idiot, especially since I have not addressed you in such a negative way. Some of you can’t let go of your anger. Let it go and move on. The world will be a much more pleasant place without such vitriolic nonsense

I did see the trailer for this movie and I will say that it is not too bad. I was just stating that I am not sure what movie goers will actually go out and see it domestically, in the US if it releases on a holiday weekend that also coincides with Valentine’s Day. A lot of people will be on vacation and I am not sure a guy would be too bright to take his beloved to a WWII type war movie. All things considered however, if they don’t FINISH it, no one will be able to see it

Mary:
Totally agree with you. My brother is a history Professor, and knows someone who is working on this films historical validity. He explains accuracy was one of their primary goals, and expects besides the lack of German language and accents( which clearly has been discussed) the film should stay within the guidelines of actual events as they occurred. Only time will tell. But either way I am excited to see this film.
….Apparently their is a guy with a very British accent as well in the film and that was quite a discussion at one point.
By the way I am NOT a history buff, and dont really care about the accent thing, so please no one jump down my throat. Just trying to share what I have heard.

From a lot of the movies I have seen, actors often don’t change their accents for a particular part. Some period pieces do it more I would think. Depends on the movie I guess. I don’t think TC’s accent in this movie will stand out as much as say the British one since the time period is WWII and Germany was at war with Britain. But that is just my take on it. About the history, from the trailer, I am believing the story they are trying to tell is going to be fairly accurate, historically. Like I have said before, I just have no personal interest in this movie and more than that, my family has decided that we won’t support anything that will fill up the coffers of th CoS. That is it in a nutshell so to speak. I have had to miss some movies I had great interest in because of this, but that is how I feel and everyone is certainly free to follow their own beliefs, accordingly.

If you consider that ‘hateful’, so be it. Your definition of hate is different then mine. I understand this is a fan site and I also enjoy new pictures and stories but there will be varying opinions on any range of things regarding any celebrity. I went to most of TC’s movies up thru Mission Impossible 1. I loved Minority Report, didn’t really get Vanilla Sky. I watched a few minutes of WOW on tv because of all the hoopla going on between ss and tc during the promotion to see what it was all about. It was not nearly as good as either the book or the original, but remakes often are disappointing. Look at the new Halloween. What a waste. My daughters made me watch the original one on tv. I don’t like horror films but you can’t redo and capture what made the first one a classic horror film. That music playing.. nothing like it.

Minority Report was terrific. I really loved War of the Worlds too, Steven Spielberg and Tom make great movies together. I can never judge a movie from only a few minutes of it but that’s just me. The TV rights for it went for over $25 million, we all tune in to see movies like that so the networks know it’s worth it to them I guess.

I would notice US accent more than British. Sorry, but for a non American (and I’m not British either), the US accent sounds really awful in period films. So does any other english-speaking accent except British. British is flat and unobtrusive to me.

Well, I had to reach back a bit into the archives to post on this thread so it would be ‘on topic’. If anyone is interested, there is a brand new article in the NYT on UA dated 4/23 under their movies section that talks about the possible future of UA and the movie Valkyrie. Very good picture of TC on the page even with the eye patch. LOL It talks about the impact the internet is having on the movie business.
