Tropic Thunder in Theaters August 15th

Just a friendly reminder that “Tropic Thunder” hits theaters on August 15th! As most of you are very aware of, Tom Cruise has a cameo in the film. It was supposed to be a surprise, but as a spokesperson for Cruise has said the, “[Paparazzi] have ruined what should have been a fun discovery for moviegoers.”

Regarding Cruise’s role, People Magazine reports:

Rather than play his typical, boyishly charming good guy, Cruise delivers an apparently memorable cameo in which he’s craggy, fat, bald, vulgar, hairy-chested – and playing an ungrateful studio boss, reports The New York Times, which also says that Cruise’s opening line in the movie comedy is enough to guarantee it an R-rating when it opens Aug. 15.”

I’m not really into most R-rated movies, so I haven’t decided if I will see this one or not. Even though Tom is in it, I am not sure this is a movie I could stomach. I may just wait for all of the clips that will most likely be leaked on line. :D Also, if any of you go see it, feel free to write a review for Tom’s part and send it to me.

This movie sounds too foul-mouthed for me. I know Tom is having trouble getting fans to go to his movies, but taking roles that are down-right vulgar are not going to up his star-power! Shame on you, Tom.

Shame on Tom for what exactly?

For having audiences and critics alike collapse in fits of laughter…………. in a role that from the reports of all those of who have seen it in previews is downright hilarious and pure comedic genius.

The accolades on this movie aren’t just for TC’s performance but every actor in it.

I am reminded though that TC was never again to get brilliant reviews like this or to quote from a book title………….Never work in this town again!

    On TC:
His involvement is classic stuff and something you will definitely be talking about after you leave the theater.

    On the previews:
And, yes, “Tropic Thunder” elicited thunderous laughs from the crowd.

    On the movie:
Saw a screening of “Tropic Thunder” today on the Paramount Lot. It was HILARIOUS. Especially the fake trailers at the beginning. Basically the whole film was a satire of Hollywood- a bunch of great stars making fun of themselves.

So, is it the acting that some people love or the over-the-top language? I’m confused.

Mary, you saw the movie, right?

BTW, not all reviews of the movie were stellar. Some were mediocre.

Tyler, It seems to be a combination of many different things with Tropic Thunder all ending with …It’s hilarious!
I have read many reviews on Tropic Thunder and I haven’t read one yet that doesn’t say this movie is a must see and out the park hilarious.

He’ll have to remember to put this one on his Web site as the big comeback.

Not my cup of tea, with or without Cruise, but sounds like a winner.

Puck and Tyer, I am shocked!

A nice word from the two of you? I know the reviews are all gushing over Tom’s performance, even his die hard critics, but for some reason, I expected you guys to spin a negative on this like Annabel did.

I am pleasantly shocked. You just wiped the frown I was carrying from the last thread off my face. Well done and thank you!

Here are some of the early reviews:

………Cruise’s R-rated tantrums are pretty funny, sometimes very funny, and his parts of the movie are by far the strongest selling point. I’m trying to think of a movie in which Cruise has actually been funny and coming up dry. He was funny in a malevolent way in “Magnolia” but not really funny in his early comedies like “Risky Business.”

By going way over the top–his performance carries a bit of the craziness of Ned Beatty in “Network”–he scores big. In short, “Tropic Thunder” is going to wipe out a lot of the bad feelings that Cruise has stirred up and get his phone ringing again……

Note: this review was negative for the rest of the movie but heck, I am just too excited that for once, critics and sceptics are putting their cynism aside and saying such nice things about our Tommy. Woo hoo

  • Lauren
    Jul 30, 2008 at 3:56 am

    Another…

……….but Tom Cruise is in this - a lot - and he’s freaking hysterical. He gives a comedic Magnolia-like performance that will undoubtedly bring back his movie star cred from audiences. He’s really funny, and shows up quite a few times. It made me completely forget all about his odd couch-jumping, Xenu hailing ways. Hate him all you want - you cannot deny why this guy was - and will continue to be - a massive movie star……

    Snob Movie Reviews: Tropic Thunder

… Enough can’t be said about Tom Cruise’s performance. He steals every single scene he’s in, and it’s quite refreshing to see him do a good job in a supporting role…………….

LA Cityzine: Comic-Con Film Review: Tropic Thunder.

… Bill Hader (SNL, Superbad), plays an executive producer on location, who answers to the psychotic studio head, played by a well disguised Tom Cruise. Oh boy, Tom Cruise. This movie is exactly what his career was in desperate need of. He gets to show everyone that he isn’t as dire and self involved as everyone has come to believe he is. He pokes fun at himself, his bosses, and literally waves his ass in the face of everyone who didn’t think he had it in him…………..

…….I already gave Tropic Thunder the best review I have given to a comedy in a long, long time and considering I have already seen Pineapple Express I can safely tell you it is better than that film as well. The promotion for the film, however, is rightly keeping the best part of the film out of the promotion, and that is the presence of Tom Cruise. Cruise is the ingredient that makes this film better than the rest. His involvement is classic stuff and something you will definitely be talking about after you leave the theater….

First Showing.net Mega Review: Pineapple Express vs Tropic Thunder!

… The second actor that stole the show wasn’t Stiller, Black, or Danny McBride, it was none other than Tom Cruise! However, I won’t spoil anything further than that, because his reveal is truly hilarious…..

  • Lauren
    Jul 30, 2008 at 9:49 am

…………..The last time I laughed this hard in a movie was probably Superbad or Borat. When I first heard about this movie I was a bit torn. I love Robert Downey Jr., but I HATE Ben Stiller with a passion. To me he is the most annoying actor on the planet. Robert Downey Jr. made this movie totally worth it. He is hilarious in this film, however, there is a cameo appearance by someone that makes this film well worth the time and the price.

  • Lauren
    Jul 30, 2008 at 9:50 am

    And yet another

……..I saw Tropic Thunder last night and it was HILARIOUS! I have to say it’s one of the best comedies I have seen this year. I laughed so much in almost every scene and had after giggles even if that particular scene was over. Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. — everyone in that movie was so funny. I wish I could say more but I can’t! I have to save it all for my review in the coming weeks. All I can say for now is: Tom Cruise. Before they showed it, they were talking about how they’ll get people to see the movie is by word of mouth and I am doing that right now so you MUST go see it when it comes out!…

I kind of agree with this…..I don’t really hate Ben Stiller but I’m not a big fan of his and Jim Carrey’s because I find them very annoying and I don’t rush to the cinema to watch their movies. Downey Jr. and TOM CRUISE are the reasons I’ll be watching this movie and of course the great reviews this movie has been receiving.

I agree, Hana. I’m not a big fan of Stiller either, but I love Robert Downey Jr and I’m also interested in seeing Tom! The man is a good actor!!

I think I’m going to see Tropic Thunder.

Wait until the box office receipts are in. I think critics will say anything based on who is paying them.

Personally, I will not be going. Movies are way too expensive and the last thing I want to do is keep Cruise or any actor in their lavish lifestyle while I am working hard for what I have.

Anyway, looks funny. But then again, most of Stiller’s movies are these light-hearted, ridiculous comedies.

Has Cruise ever done a comedy before?

Interesting tidbit I read: August and Sept. are down months for the studios. It is when they get rid of movies that are not expected to do well. The reasoning is that by the end of July, the Summer Blockbusters have been released and the studios are preparing for October when the Oscar contenders will be released.

  • Lauren
    Jul 30, 2008 at 11:52 am

Anon, I am not sure where you read that but August is a month for commedies and September for thriller and serious movies. But then, you don’t like Tom so I am not surprised you are putting a negative spin on this as well. However far fetched.

You never watch movies in a cinema? How sad! It is one of the most enjoyable pass times. Espcially with good company on a friday night and a fatnastic movie. Try it, amybe you will like it. Doesn’t have to be a Tom Cruise movie.

  • Mary
    Jul 30, 2008 at 11:52 am

Anon: You don’t go to the movies at all?
Also, interesting what you posted about August and September as movie release months because quite a few critically/ must see movies are being released during that time period.

Many of the critics reviewing Tropic Thunder have stated their dislike of Cruise in their review of TT but say quite clearly that in this role he is brilliant and a reminder of what a phenomenal actor he is.

Lauren: I prefer interacting with people over a good game or dinner. You can’t talk to people when watching a movie. But given how you treat everyone here, maybe movies are good thing for you to do with friends so you can keep them hanging out with you.

I do go to the movies, but I am very picky about what I will watch in the theater and what I will rent later. It is not only money, but also time. Time is more precious than money and I would rather spend that interacting with people than watch other people living theirs. (And before you go off about me being here, I work on my computer part-time and I need a diversion from reading and editing!!)

Any way, the last comment was more of an FYI, not a slam against Cruise. I just found it interesting the cycles movie studios go through, that was it.

I think in your small minded world, you forget that this is not a Cruise movie. He only has 10 minutes of a 90-110 minute film. I think you live and thrive on criticism too, especially of those who don’t agree with you 100%.

Yes, I do like some of his films: War of the Worlds (saw in the theater), Far and Away, Minority Report, etc. I have seen many others he did, and while I don’t hate them, they are not my favorite movies either. I don’t watch movies for actors, but for the plot!!

Isn’t blogging about how other people live their life the same thing?

I read the whole thing, Anon. I still thought my question still stands since watching and blogging about other people’s life is the same thing. I’d have thought there were many other stuff that doesn’t require talking about other people’s life for diversion. Thats all.

  • Charlotte Rose

Gee Hana, I thought Anon. answered the question very well.

If there’s other stuff we should be talking about, then we’re ALL in trouble. LOL!!

We’re ALL talking about “other people’s life” for diversion, IMHO. Otherwise, why would we be here!! Tom and Katie are very interesting people!

My friend that works on all of tc movies just called to tell me he saw Tropic Thunder. Since this is NOT a tc movie, he did NOT get to work on it.
He said that it was just okay, but that since he is an “insider” certain scenes had different meanings to him vs “you little people” as he jokingly calls anyone not in the business. haha

He said when it was over, they had a Q&A session. The majority of the audience didn’t even realize that tc had a part in the movie!
Most of the cameos play themselves. But I guess tc is in heavy make up and a fat suit so he is not even recognizable.

He said that it should be #1 or #2 at the box office on opening week end, since it has Ben Stiller, Jack Black and RDjr as the stars.

  • Hana
    Jul 31, 2008 at 6:09 am

PH: I heard the opposite. Before the movie is finished you’ll be aware that TC is actually in the movie and that is what makes it all funny and special. :) And no thanks to the critics it won’t be a total surprise now.

    Latest review for TT:

“Speaking of Tom Cruise, here’s the guy that pulls the rug out from all of the other actors and steals this movie. His portrayal of an overweight, balding, hairy chested media head was done so over the top, it had audiences in stitches every time he was on screen. Of course, according to Fox News reporter Roger Friedman, Tom Cruise is no longer bankable because he’s 45. Which means this role should never have happened since he’s obviously past his prime, right Roger? I’m wondering if you actually saw the movie since it has actors in it over the age of 40. No, despite Roger’s flawed logic, this is the role that will generate even more buzz around Tom. Whatever you think about him, whether or not he’s nuts because of Scientology, he’s still a great actor and this role proves it. He’s so good in it, I’m hoping the academy notices, but they’ll ignore a comedy performance, instead focusing on some ballkisser who does a bit part in an English drama that will be in theaters for two whole weeks in December.”

Hey PUck: I read somewhere that they are not expecting much from this movie because typically movies that are a spoof on Hollywood don’t do well. The issue is people just don’t get the jokes, like your friend said.

That being said, I am willing to bet that Cruise in a fat suit was released ‘anonymously’ to help drive Box Office receipts (Surprisingly, none of the other cameos were leaked).

    Jul 31, 2008 at 10:06 am

Why don’t you guys also post the negative reviews or the reviews that don’t mention Cruise? It would probably paint a more balanced, honest picture of this movie. I also noticed some the reviews are being posted here more than once.

Tyler: you can click the link for the complete review.

Anon: This is a TomKat website and that is why fans are posting Tom’s cameo review. If you want to read complete review for the movie, you can google it….its all been positive so far.

Also, critics are talking about cameos by Matthew McConaughey, and Toby Maguire…I’m sure you’ll read about them if you go to their fan site.

Keep in mind these reviews are just a test of what to come…once the movies is released there will be a lot more.
