Tom Cruise’s Fancy Footwork in Tropic Thunder
Monsters and Critics has a great review of Tom Cruise’s fancy footwork in “Tropic Thunder“. From what I’ve read, he amazed his co-stars with his dancing. Cruise’s cameo in the movie includes some hip-hop dancing for some party guests.
Co-star Robert Downing Jr. says of Tom’s footwork, “He’s a very good, excellent dancer. I’ll tip my hat to Tom.“
Jack Black added, “The fact that he came in and in six days of shooting made that kind of impact? I’d say per hour, he was the big winner in ‘Tropic Thunder‘.”
Producer, writer and star of Tropic Thunder, Ben Stiller, says that we will all be a little shocked by Cruise’s colorful language. That’s part of the reason the movie has received an R rating. Ben Stiller calls it “war dialogue“.
Sounds interesting!

47 opinions for Tom Cruise’s Fancy Footwork in Tropic Thunder

Not that it matters but its actually Robert Downing Jr. who said I quote.
“The fact that he came in and [in] six days of shooting made that kind of impact? I’d say per hour, he was the big winner in ‘Tropic Thunder,’” Downey Jr. said. “I’ll tip my hat to Tom.”
Here is the link to the actually interview from Access Hollywood.

I don’t see how this small part is going to turn Tom’s recent career issues around. Interesting that he according to all reports thought up and planned the part even down to the costume. My opinion is that it was a direct slap at Redstone who had ‘fired’ him from Paramount.
Mary

Mr. Redstone was laughing up a storm when TT screened at the Paramount lot recently.
Mr. Redstone said he did not fire Tom and he dedn’t know where that idea came from.
I believe Hana was kind enough to post Mr. Redstone’s words here previously.

Did he now? Mr. Redstone wishes!

They ALL spin things to suit their agendas.
Here’s what R said:
I still think he’s a great actor. He had lunch with me. It’s clear he wants to come back.”

Tyler: I’ve googled that quote and the only place it comes up is on IMDB and Contact Music and we all know how reliable they are. NOT!

For the whole of 2006, Sumner ‘antique’ Redstone was making advances towards Tom Cruise. From saying he was quoted out of context, to saying he would want to work with him, then saying he never fired him, then Cruise can do M14, then Tom is a great actor he admired and a friend… etc etc etc.
If you missed it, Redstone nolonger has friends, he alienated his executives, his lawyers and even fell out with his kids. Besides, I doubt he said something like that, in any case he is the one who needs mercy.
As usual, the media put a spin on it. There are those who were not so happy with Redstone sucking up to Cruise after his 2005 humiliation, so they set out to make it seem like Tom was begging Redstone, conveniently forgetting whose hand was holding the olive branch in the first place. If I were Tom, I would have taken the branch and hit his antique head with it. LOL.

Lauren, I find your use of the word “antique” in reference to Mr. Redstone to be age discrimination and offensive. I don’t know know why you feel it is necessary to add a slur in with your comments. Older people are a blessing to our society and should be shown a little respect.
As for this movie, I saw a trailer for it and it looks funny. But then, I like Ben Stiller in most of his movies and I think it is pretty cool that Tom was able to take on this role and be something so different from what he normally does…that takes some courage…and a sense of humor to basically poke fun at yourself.

Lauren, you say the best things, ”antique head”

Lilianne, Mr Redstone does’nt seem to be a very nice man at all.
Lilianne
Aug 6, 2008 at 7:34 am
Whether he is nice or not isn’t the point…and besides…that is your perspective, is it not? Whether you or anyone thinks he is nice or not does not mean it is ok for someone to call him names and refer to him as an “antique” because of his age. Someone can disapprove of his methods or his treatment of Tom Cruise and feel that he was completely out of line without calling him a name. One does not have anything to do with the other, in my opinion and I feel it is offensive to speak about someone in such a way.

Lauren
Aug 6, 2008 at 11:27 am
Lilianne, like I said on another post, you are a much nicer person than me. I do agree it is not necessary to call Redstone names, but I can’t apologise when I don’t feel sorry. I do apologise for offending you though. Redstone deserves even worse.
Tyler, big of you to notice that it is wrong to call people names. You never complain when people call Tom names. You did not even complain when Puck called Suri names. Double standards, no?
Since you are not reading my ‘very interesting and informative posts’, I guess you will miss that. All the same. A girl can try, can’t she?
Lilianne
Aug 6, 2008 at 11:37 am
Lauren, apology accepted. I don’t know that I am a nicer person than anyone else. I don’t happen to agree with you, though, that Redstone deserves what you said about him and worse. He felt the way that he felt about Tom at the time that all of that happened and he had his reasons for it. He shouldnt be faulted for that…it was about business and right or wrong, good or bad…he was doing what he thought was the right thing.

Time for Lauren to die of shock: Roger Friedman at foxnews praised Cruise’s performance.

Lauren,
I don’t really care what you call anyone. I just loved the fact that you praised Lilliane for “turning the other cheek” and then you lambasted Redstone, almost in the same breath, if you will.
Class act, all the way.

“He’s a very good, excellent dancer. I’ll tip my hat to Tom.“
——————
tc did some mighty fancy footwork dancing around the “O” questions.
————————-
“The fact that he came in and in six days of shooting made that kind of impact”
——–
It took six days to film ten minutes? Amazing how the film industry works.
Roger Friedman had a good review about tc and the this movie.
But since according to Lauren, he only writes LIES, I guess he is not reliable.
Lauren
Aug 6, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Friedman has realised no one takes him seriously any more. The media has starting to disregard him as a reviewer after reviewing movies based on a trailer. I have not seen a review that does not hail Tom’s performance, I guess he would have looked even more foolish if he said otherwise.
He did write an earlier review on Tropic thunder that dissed it, obviously based on the trailer.
I am not surprised he is trying to salvage his flagging credibility.

Lilianne, I have no problem with Redstone doing the best for his company, but the way he did it with the intention to humiliate destroy Tom who had made the studio over 4 bln. makes me insult him. Not that it is right, I just have no remorse about it.
Tyler (I thought you skip my posts! ;) notice that I pointed out that she was better than me and I admired her for it. I am learning but still have a long way to go.

Aug 6, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Friedman has “flagging credibility”? Maybe to you Lauren, but here in LA he’s very well respected AND very well liked by most people including those in the industry. You may not like his comments regarding Tom and Katie, but that doesn’t make him any less credible or respected. He’s known as very reliable and one of the “good guys” by the studio’s.

Thank you, Charlotte Rose. Finally, some rational thought.

Aug 7, 2008 at 2:29 am
OMG! Friedman is respected????!! LOL! That is new!
And he is not a movie critic! He is a gossip columnist and no one respects a FOX gossip columnist in LA!
Hana
Aug 7, 2008 at 2:31 am
And Friedman is not just unkind to Tom and Katie. He is unkind to celebrities in general!
Mary
Aug 7, 2008 at 4:23 am
Roger Friedman is a gossip columnist and one who has no regard for the truth and facts………….Then again one can argue that a gossip columnist by definition has no need to respect truth or facts.
Mr. Friedman’s turnabout face in his critique of Tom’s performance in TT has in my opinion changed solely because the performance has been hailed unanimously as brilliant.
Mr. Friedman has been roundly criticized for blatantly inaccurate statements in his columns both past and present.
Charlotte Rose
Aug 7, 2008 at 8:33 am
Sorry to disappoint ladies, but I live and work in LA and the facts are the facts. I never said the celebrities respect Friedman….I said the studio’s love him.
The only ones who criticize Friedman are those who don’t care for what he says, ie publicists and guys like you, but the reality is he has tons of inside sources within the business and has been given inside info from the studio’s for years. He’s even more tied in than Nikki Finke who is accurate on a daily basis.
By the way, I won’t dispute the idea that he dislikes Tom. I think he does, but then again, so do alot of other studio insiders. That’s been my experience.
Mary, did it ever occur to you that Friedman was just being honest about his thoughts on Tom’s performance in TT? He saw it and he liked it. Your opinion may be different, but in fact, you can’t know that he’s just hoping on the bandwagon.
I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on this subject. I really don’t have the time to sit here, do a search and give examples of how many times Friedman has been right in his assessments of the whole Hollywood scene. Sorry! You all have a nice day now!! :)

Forgot to add….
It seems that around here, anything that’s POSITIVE becomes “the truth” and anything that’s remotely negative is “a lie” or “just gossip”. I find that a bit odd, IMHO.
I would rather look at what’s written, and use what I know to be true from my experience as well as my critical thinking skills. No columnist is accurate all the time, but no columnist is wrong all the time either.
I know you guys are fans (I’m a fan of Tom’s work, but not necessarily of his personal life), but the reality is that NO ONE is perfect. Not even Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes. LOL!

There is a very interesting commentary on Roger Friedman from 2004 titled…………How Liars Behave When They Get Caught - February 2004.
Roger Friedman has been wrong more times than this individual can count and even when proven incorrect and he has, he will not recant.
Friedman totally dismissed TT and Tom’s performance in it previously without having seen the movie ………His criticism couldn’t hold up because Tom’s performance has been unanimously labelled as brilliant.
If Mr. Friedman wanted to be credible he should have waited until he was able to view TT, as he has now been able to do.

CR: when did anyone HERE say anything thats positive is the truth and negative is not? And no one implied it either.
Tell me which studios insiders take RG seriously please do tell. Is it FOX or the ones whose movies always get dissed by him? Cloverfield, The Incredible Hulk anyone?? Just because he writes he gets his gossip from studio insiders doesn’t make it true! All gossip columnist say that.
No one here or most people outside FOX takes RF seriously that includes when he write positive articles. His articles are headline grabbing and for that reason other blogs do report what he writes but I think now they’re catching on.
And yes, positive or negative RF is wrong most of the time! When he even claims to get the info from the horses mouth like when he wrote “Angelina told him she was having two girls”, turns out to be false too.
CR: I’ve a friend who works in the industry too (who is a producer) and he’d said time and time again, that producers and studios insiders always dread what the likes of RF writes about their movies and the stars and now you telling me they’re willing to give him the dirt?
And if you’ve been a fan of TC’s work you would know that, TC is amongst one of the most liked actors by the studios and Hollywood. Don’t confuse Hollywood with the media.
No one said Tom and Katie are perfect!
Hana

Just to clear up, I’m not saying he doesn’t get info from “insiders”, I’m sure gossip columnist get info from insiders for PR or other reasons but to say he is respected and liked by Hollywood/studios is off the chart.

—————————————
I didn’t say anyone HERE said that, Hana. That’s what I see around here. It’s my opinion of some of you.
I’m not going to reveal which studio’s I work for but I will say that it isn’t Fox.
Finally, since you have “a friend” in the industry, I’m sure he knows far more than I ever could!! LOL!! Look…..I can only tell you what I know to be fact. Many, many, many producers and industry insiders, as well as studio heads feed Friedman information. He’s also invited to industry screenings. I’ve seen him dozens of times thru the years.
You’re going to believe what you want, and that’s fine. I’m not interested in arguing!
Mary,
I knew you would find SOMETHING written somewhere on the net that’s negative toward Roger Friedman. ;) I’m happy for you that you have that kind of time, but I don’t. Sorry. I’m only speaking from my experience with actual producers and studio heads, but I’m sure your internet sources are much better.
Again, this isn’t worth arguing over. You’re all gonna believe what fits your perspective and that’s fine. As for me, I’m here to have fun, not fight. And I am having fun sharing my opinion!

We’re all here to have fun and share our opinions, and discuss things politely, so you don’t have to be snarky towards Mary who is very nice and polite and usually provides facts and not argument unlike some people!!
Agree to disagree about RF because I’ve already wasted enough time discussing a jackas* who doesn’t deserve a minute of my time. :)

I wasn’t being snarky, but I see you are. LOL!! You and Lauren make quite the tag team! ;) You talk about being polite then you make rather nasty assumptions about “some people”. Pot meet Kettle!! :)
I was being honest - not nasty. Just because you disagree about something, doesn’t mean you’re being nasty. I’m just not into your group think. If you spend enough time searching the net, you can find negativity and positivity about ANYONE. God Bless Mary….she has something she found on the net to respond to everything. I give her alot of credit. I don’t know where she finds the time to find it all! Good for you Mary! I truly am awed by you!

CR: Don’t take everything so serious and personally!
“Some people” doesn’t mean you or non-fan. It means some people, and yes that includes people like Lauren, you, myself and everyone who might have had an argument here but NOT Mary! I was only talking about Mary not the fans! And there is nothing snarky in my comment (notice I didn’t use “;)” like you)?
Sometimes you come across as if you’re frustrated and ready to pick a fight by accusing people of all sort! Try to loosen up and not take things personally.
Mary like myself is a fan of Tom and Katie and as fans there are fan forums where information about the couple is posted, so people like Mary can find facts from such sites. It doesn’t take a lot of time. Just like you found the time to come here and post other people find the time to check out the facts from other sites.

Me too Mary! here is another review.
“Tom Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious in it, and Jack Black has his moments, but the actor who steals Tropic Thunder outright doesn’t even appear on the poster. Tom Cruise, who has an extended cameo in the movie as a belligerent studio executive, is so over-the-top funny he makes you forget all about that appearance on Oprah and the other freaky stuff.
Because it’s a cameo, there aren’t any photos of Cruise in the film’s presskit. There’s only this widely circulated image of him between scenes on the set. But trust me when I say you walk out of Tropic Thunder thinking Tom Cruise is cool again. Like Top Gun-era cool.”

Whatever Hana. You guys are always right and always have the “facts” which I find interesting. I can’t even use a wink without you freaking out. LOL! Trust me when I say this doesn’t affect me in the least. LOL!! I’m not going to run away because you’re trying to shut me up. LOL!! Its just not in my nature. If you address a post to me, expect a response. That’s the way it works. ;)
Feel free to ignore me. Remember….I didn’t attack anyone. I simply stated my opinion and responded to your post. It’s you and Lauren who seem to have issues with ME and have been taking advantage of Julie’s absence. I have complete respect for Julie and her rules, but “some people” don’t.
Can we PLEASE just let it go. I have my opinion and you have yours. Don’t try to change mine. I have no desire to change yours.
I will not respond to anymore attacks, but I will state my opinion if I want to. Many posters here seem to agree with me. Let Julie handle it.

I thought TT was degenerate and can see no way that the foul language or the vulgar action that came from Tom’s mouth and body will enhance his career. The whole movie was rotten and filthy, and I am disappointed in Tom for stooping so low.
