Tom Cruise Tops Forbes List

by leora on May 1st, 2007

I can’t even comprehend having a Million dollars let alone making 67 times that in just a year.  He’s SO RICH!

When it comes to entertainment earnings, men still dominate. Forbes Magazine has just released its 2007 listing of the World’s Most Powerful Celebrities, with men on average earning nearly twice as much as their female counterparts.

Movie actor Tom Cruise ranks atop this year’s list, earning $67 million. Rounding out the top five are, in descending order, rock singer Mick Jagger; talk show hostess-producer Oprah Winfrey; rock band U2; and golfer Tiger Woods.

The list measures both the stars’ earnings and their influence within their respective fields. Movie industry analysts say men have the upper hand through career longevity and overall box-office appeal.

Way to go, Tom! You remain Number One in our hearts and in the Movie industry. The Oscar(s) you will get sooner rather than later will just be the cherries on the cake. Remain the great guy, compassionate to others and the wonderful family man you are, forget all the stupid gossips which fill the trash mags. Know that you can count on the love of all of us who have been following your terrific career for over 20 wonderful, amazing years! Love!, Lili

    Congrats to Tom.

I don’t believe that bs the tabloids write about Tomkat. One can see that they are happy. They are a match made in heaven. I just feel bad for Tom and Katie constantly having to read what’s not true at all. They are such a sweet couple and look at little Suri, she’’s such a sweet little thing. The press is just being the press becaue they can’t really find anything to write about anymore.

Hanks, Cruise and Gibson used to be the top guns, but not anymore. Meet the new most powerful actor on the planet—Will Smith.
For almost as long as there have been power lists, Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise—”The Toms”—have jockeyed for first position, occasionally letting Mel Gibson sneak up on the rail, just to keep things interesting. But just like that, the race has changed. Gibson hasn’t starred in a major film in five years. Cruise lost his cool on Oprah’s couch, and it’s unclear if he can get it back. And Hanks, while undeniably bankable, is, at 50, no longer viable for most leading-man scripts. In the past year, all three men have been eclipsed. With a worldwide career box office of $4.4 billion, Will Smith is now the most powerful actor in Hollywood, followed by Johnny Depp and Ben Stiller. Talk about punctuated (or maybe that should be “punctured”) equilibrium. “The industry is going through a sea change, not just with actors, but in every way,” says one industry insider who, like others interviewed for this story, asked for anonymity to prevent offending other stars. “Will Smith is the only thing in this business—the only thing—that represents a guaranteed opening weekend.” He may be even bigger than that. “Let’s put it this way,” says one studio head, “there’s Will Smith, and then there are the mortals.”

An actor’s power is determined primarily by opening-weekend grosses. The average cost of a studio film is now $100 million, and to get that back, you need a huge opening weekend. A star who delivers a first-weekend gross of $30 million or more can write his own ticket: $25 million salary, director approval and a two-story trailer with a flat-screen TV. It’s a sweet ride, but it’s harder to catch than it seems. Real power requires an understanding of the global market, and a talent for finding scripts that suit your persona and directors who can deliver the goods. Once isn’t enough. You have to do it every time. NEWSWEEK’s power rankings are guided—through interviews with studio heads, agents and producers—by that definition. The choice for the No. 1 spot was unanimous.

Almost every movie he’s made since “Independence Day” (total gross: $817 million) has been a global blockbuster.

I wonder what the haters have to say now. I htink they will whine that Tom bought forbes or has shares in it. Way to go Tom. Jump on all the couches you want. Looks like you are untouchable!!!!!!

Sorry about that, it id unfinished. I wanted to say that 2007 IS Tom’s year. I bet Lions for Lambs is going to be a hit. UA is also hitting it off. The sky is th elimit for Tom Cruise.

  • Cillian
    May 2, 2007 at 1:03 pm

Way to go Tom Cruise and reports said they havent even totaled his overall worth. They’re predicting he can be the 1st billionaire Hollywood actor.

  • Laurie
    May 2, 2007 at 1:15 pm

That newsweek list is hopeless. It had Brad Pitt at No 4 who has not had a hit in six years. What was the compiler thinking? Obviously he wanted to take a jab at Cruise. Must be ashamed that the Forbes list which is more credible than his has proved that his list is hogwash. BS.

  • Anne
    May 2, 2007 at 1:19 pm

Cillian, am so confident that with UA, Tom is going to be a billionaire in the next six years. Just watch Haters.

The interesting part is that other actors are so far behind him that they do not even compete. My guess is that even if Tom shot the president, he would still be No 1 STAR in the world. LOL. So is his grip on that position.

  • Anne
    May 2, 2007 at 1:21 pm

Leora, youare surprised at 67 miilion? That is only his earnings from MI3. He is worth so much more than that. Between $500 and 600 mil. I also think he is a co-owner of half of all scientology properties. LOL. That is Tom Cruise for you.

  • libraesque
    May 2, 2007 at 3:16 pm

    TOM CRUISE
    397,850 MI3
    591,745 WOTW
    217,663 collateral

    WILL SMITH
    $298 POH
    368,100 hitch
    $817 Ind Day

Believe me, the only reason TC got 67 million for MI3 was because of an unheard of deal he made, which backfired on him when he started acting like a crazy person and got FIRED

Hopefully he set a new standard for other actors to make the same kind of deals

Now cruise has to pay himself to act

  • LIBRAESQUE
    May 2, 2007 at 3:24 pm

so if my calculations are right, if Will would have inked the same deal as TC/MI3, for Ind Day he would have made 269 MILLION!!!!!

  • LIBRAESQUE
    May 2, 2007 at 3:29 pm

and I GUARANTEE that even though cruise can work outside the studio NO ONE will hire him
you’ll NEVER see cruise in anything other than a UA movie for the rest of his career

and by the way things are going on the set of MM, katie will only be doing UA movies from here on out too!!

and do you think cruise would ever give an actor the opportunity to get a percentage of the gross of a movie? not on your life

  • mare
    May 2, 2007 at 4:59 pm

Man, some people really seem to hate tom cruise. It makes sense that he tops the list. The guy has been consistently successful, especially compared to other actors/actresses, for 20 years! Maybe MI3 didn’t do so well compared to the other two, but it did have a solid opening and it was rated as the best out of the trilogy. The fact that the guy is still pretty damn successful after this long and is actually making quality films is awesome.

  • Megan
    May 2, 2007 at 5:32 pm

I know Mare, especially since some people wanted us to believe that he should be written off. Who writes of the MOST POWERFUL STAR in the world. Are they crazy????

  • Anne
    May 2, 2007 at 5:37 pm

How can someone say no one will hire Tom when Paramount chief Redstone is yapping about working with him in the future? He is the most powerful star in the world right now. Business is not built on sentiments but with brains. The last I heard, companies were fighting for the distribution rights of Mad money, Now who was talking about it going straight ot DVD? Katie is now a world wide star and if people still give roles to Angelina Jolie who has not had a box office success for years, then I guess Katie has nothing to worry about.

I am sure if she was not in the Mad Money Flick, no one would be talking about it. He he.

  • LIBRAESQUE
    May 2, 2007 at 5:40 pm

no mare, what makes sense is that he made the list because he’s a freak and a media whore, THAT’S what gets you to the top of the forbes list. one of the ways they compile the list is by how many times the person has been on the cover of magazines that’s pretty lame.
Yea, MI3 was the best of the trilogy and it did THE WORST all because of tom cruises crazy

that coupled with the fact that he got 33% of a movie he caused to bomb, and it’s NO WONDER most of hollywood is happy to see this guy take a fall

  • LIBRAESQUE
    May 2, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Redstone!!!!!!! A senile old coot who almost fell down during his interview with vanity fair last year???? who stated in that interview that he fired cruise, then said recently he didn’t fire him

    hahahahahahaha, you must be kidding!!!!!!!

And no one is talking about katie being a great actress in mad money, what they’re speculating on is her flirting with her co-star. that’s the only talk.

On the other hand there is already Oscar buzz in the biz about Angies performance in a Mighty Heart!!!

  • mare

there is also oscar buzz about Lions for Lambs…

    yea, for meryl streeps performance

  • mare

Entertainment Weekly said in an issue, “Lambs sounds like a return to the edgy kind of material that garnered him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Magnolia.”

Also, I go on IMDB.COM and people there who have read the script say that the part could get him a nomination…Do you have any sources for Meryl Streep supposedly being an oscar contender?

Lib, for your information, awards are good but that is as far as it goes. Did you aee any ome talking about awards in the list of most powerful celebrities? Lets not kid oursleves, movies are made for money and that is one aspect of all Jolie Movies. They bomb at the box office.

Lets wait for Lions for Lambs. I have no doubt it will be a resounding success and I can’t wait for it. With Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep adn Robert Redford.

Jolie will never win another Oscar. Over the dead bodies of the voters. I think she is the most despised person in Hollywood and even has no friends and very many enemies. That is why she tries to pressure Pitt to stay in new Orleans. Now he is off to Prague. Brad Grey should wake up and realise Plan B is going no where. The departed did well but not that well. Now no one even respects Pitt any more. Poor pussy whipped Pitt.

This is not his thread so please go to Pitt watch and post about him there.

LIBRAESQUE, why are you posting Newsweek’s article which came out a while back? Newsweek listing is not even taken seriously in the movie Buisness but Forbes IS. Even if Will Smith is the top star good for him. I like Will and what is even better is they’re Will and Tom are friends so Tom will be happy for Will. Another thing the new Forbes 2007 list doesn’t come out till the end of MAY and personally I think Johnny Deep will be the top actor with Tom Cruise to follow.

Everything you’re saying sounds like jealousy and hateful wish.
Tom is already hired by another studio….he will be filming the Hardy Men which is a Twentieth Century-Fox Film and NOT UA and he is also producing movies with other studios.

Another cruise has already gave actors the opportunity to get a percentage of the gross of a movie…”Lions for Lambs” Redford (who directs as well as stars), Cruise and Streep have all agreed to share in profits rather than take their customary up-front money.

Check the facts before you start you rambling in the future.

it is a shame that all that money can’t buy him credibility i know that you hard core fans will think i am a hater but i am not tom lost all his credibility and will have to work very hard to gain it back i hope he can and that he does not allow him self to get side tracked into his religious beliefs again because the general public do not want to hear it

  • Jane
    May 3, 2007 at 7:55 am

I don’t think Tom cares that much about the media and what part of the public think of him. He worked hard for over 20 years…he is a Hollywood royalty whatever happens from now on and now he is just being himself and doing what is important to him. Even though I’m not a scientologist, now that Tom has opened the door to his beliefs to the public I don’t see that door shutting close anytime soon.

lili yes tom is simply that, an actor, so why did he do that dangerous stunt about post natal depression, knowing that he had a large fanbase who would take his opinion and be influenced it, it was very selfish and irresponsible, and even though he appears to have made up with brooke, he still said what he did in front of many many people, you can’t change that
and angela, just because someone doesn’t like a celebrity doesn’t mean they are ‘disinterested’ in them does it
do you really think he is going to personally read your note above? you should of left him your number as well then

  • effie
    May 3, 2007 at 8:33 am

oh and jane you are incredibly mistaken in your assumption that tom doesn’t care what the media or part of the public think of him, get real, public adoration is his life and driving force, same as many many other actors, it is part and parcel of their chosen profession, you sound like you are just too star struck to think logically, don’t bother replying to me as you bore me with your stupid comments come to think of it, you talk c rap that you don’t know about

  • Jane
    May 3, 2007 at 9:06 am

    effie

I really don’t want to get into something that can go on and on for but Tom didn’t do a “dangerous stunt about post natal depression”. It all started On Access Hollywood he was asked what he thinks of “his friend” Brooke taking drugs for PND and writing a book about it…he was aksed the question because it was against his religion and then he gave his answer….after that everywhere he went he was interviewed about that subject and the rest is history. Lots of celebrities think they can influence us folks about something they are passion about including Brooke and Tom is not the first person to do that.

One think about Tom is even after all the media backlash and all the tabloids nonsense he hasn’t ever waivered, never backed down and definitely doesn’t care about the media and bad press he gets doing what he thinks is right. Just for that I have gained so much more respect for him over the last few years. It just shows that he does what is important to him and he really isn’t bothered about what people say and how that affects his career. And what non fans say on blogs like this means zero to him… and must be somewhat disconcerting to realize just how little your words affect anything.

    May 3, 2007 at 9:39 am

The fact that Tom has steadfastly refused to fire back at an outrageous personal attack by Viacom head Sumner Redstone says a lot about him and instead Tom had chosen a different way to fire back by working hard and let his results be his revenge.
For that and so many other reasons Tom will always have my respect and admiration.

angela go and put your Top Gun dvd on and close your eyes (just like your mind) and imagine you are Katie, like I am sure you spend most of your time doing
so you and jane believe that tom DOESN’T care what the public or media think of him
    is that right?
every move that he makes is a carefully orchestrated public relations STUNT to get more ATTENTION from the public and the media
he would never have had the career that he has enjoyed if it had not been for the response of the media and the public, i am not being nasty in saying that, even as a fan you have to admit that that much is true
and if he had no public or media support, who would pay him to act in any film because without public support and media support no one would buy tickets to go and see it, i really find it hard to believe that you don’t agree with that simple fact
why do you presume that everything people write who don’t like tom can’t be right?
