Tom Cruise is Trying to Bond with Father-in-Law
Star Magazine is saying that Tom Cruise is trying real hard to bond with his father-in-law Martin Holmes. How? By playing golf of course! How else do guys bond right?
Supposedly Tom has offered to buy Katie a membership at the Los Angeles’ prestigious Bel-Air Country Club, so that him and Katie can play golf with her dad.
A source tells the magazine, “Katie’s father is not crazy about Tom, but Tom is really determined to win him over. Mr. Holmes golfs a lot, and now Katie is learning to play. Tom is a member at Bel-Air, and he’s in the process of adding Katie to his membership so Katie can take her dad to play with her.”
“Adding Katie to his membership is costing Tom $150,000 a year. That’s a pretty expensive way to try to impress your father-in-law - unless you’re Tom Cruise!”
Katie’s father has never spoken out about his daughter’s marriage to Tom, but sources have claimed he is not happy about it, or the fact that she left her Catholic up-bringing to become a Scientologist.
Who knows? Oh, and the picture above is of Katie’s parents, Martin and Kathleen Holmes, visiting the set of Valkyrie. I wonder if it was so they could see Katie and Suri, or if they were there out of support for the movie. Dare I ask what you think? :D

We will probably never know their true feelings toward Tom… on another unrelated note, I like that Katie’s father is an educated man….an attorney. He is bright and I appreciate that. I believe that TC never received a college degree…is that correct? TC may be a star and have lots of money, but the brains belong to Martin Holmes.

No college degree for TC, I think he dropped out of H.S. His father was abusive to him and TC has dyslexia. So what? He is a phenomenal success, just about runs scientology, he’s on par with any lawyer. No big deal about being a lawyer, now try being a TC. Didn’t TC say he could cure all human woes, can’t beat that.

Jenna, books is not neccessarily brains. Of course I respect Martin Holmes a great deal but just because he went to Uni does not make him any better than Tom, Katie, or Kathleen Holmes who didn’t. Remember he went to night Uni so maybe he dropped off and caught up with education later in Life. Katie’s brother was in Harvard. Katie did not take her place at Columbia Uni, does that make her less than her father? Her mother is a housewife.
Katie’s parents have made their feelings clear about Tom, her father said his daughter could not have found a better man. The wedding speech said it all. Even from pictures we see of them, they seem to have a great relationship with Tom. They also went to Bella and Connor’s games. Once even without either Tom or Katie. That says a lot about their relationship.
Why do we choose to ignore and disregard their own words and actions? What do they have to gain from lying?

As the mother of 2 daughters I can tell you exactly why a parent would not support their daughter’s relationship……because they do not like the boy/man in their child’s life. It is pretty simple. As a parent you want your child to be happy and if you hear or see or think your child is being made unhappy in any way by their partner then you will NOT like that person. I am not saying that things are this way with Katie’s parents and Tom because I obviously don’t know. But having daughters (especially one old enough to date) gives me a perspective that someone else might not have.
I also don’t think I would be thrilled at my daughter’s success and wealth as much as I would be her happiness and joy. If you don’t have the latter then the former means absolutely nothing.

I would imagine at first they would be concerned about Katie’s change in religion, but she is an adult and she made her decision. I changed religion myself when I was grown up and at first my mother was concerned until she figured out that it was still me. And, as parents, they would first and foremost care about their daughter’s happiness, which is very, very evident when she is with her family.

I don’t know how ‘evident’ that is as we so rarely see her with her parents. Or any of her family as far as that goes. There is a family portrait from sometime in 2004 b/tc and it actually is lovely with all the siblings and the parents. Those of you that go to the other site can catch it there. She looks like the ‘baby’ of the family which she is. Where are all of them now? Does she take Suri and go see her folks by herself like most young mom’s do? I did that when living in Arizona and my girls were young. Are there any pictures of her and a sister shopping just with each other. No, there is always some kind of sci-fi minder with her or ’stylist’ whatever. If she goes to NY will she and Suri go or will it be the mother-in-law and TC and crew..She won’t go by herself, that much is certain. Personally, I think she probably loves Tom, but I sure think he smothers her to death.

isn’t he a high-school drop out? people speak of him as if he’s this superior intellectual being. i don’t get it. he got a lucky break with risky business and, yes, he’s a good actor, but you and i know good actors are serving tables in restaurants all over los angeles. you have to credit scientology with one thing (ouch!). they did instill confidence in him, be it genuine or false confidence, so i’m sure he feels he owes them alot in return, and maybe he does. i do feel for katie, who had to sign up for a package deal.

LOL Now Julia Roberts-super strong extremely independent woman and her husband Danny Moder–hmm Oh and Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck -fairly equal in their partnership. Then Katie who always defers to Tommyboy and almost every picture of them together show him either dragging her along or his hands all over her in some strange possessive way. Somehow it is like comparing apples and watermelons. NOTHING remotely like the cruiser.

In answer to your question Julie, the pic is from last summer in Berlin when they came to Berlin to see Katie and their grandkid. Or it could have been from NY when Katie ran the marathon and they went to a special LFL screening that night.
Valkyrie is not complete yet!!
I doubt they were there to ’support the movie’, only to see their daughter and grandkid.

Your comment Lauren would lead the reader to believe that I said M. Holmes was better than TC because he possessed a Law degree….if you carefully re-read my post I never made any such allegation. I simply wrote that I respect Holmes and the degree that he obtained….Law school is tough. My husband is an attorney and to graduate from Law school is quite an accomplishment. It takes intelligence and I applaud Katie’s father for his achievement.

From what I have read, M Holmes will support Katie no matter what, I cant see him having much faith in the longevity of their relationship, but he will rise to any occasion presented, he is a gentleman first and foremost. I am sure he does what needs to be done. But a Catholic supporting the CoS, please….that is rhetorical.

Ah yes, the relationship that was predicted to be over no sooner than it began and not last past the summer of 2005.
At Katie and Tom’s wedding in 2006 Martin Holmes said he had no worry that Katie had found the right man and he welcomed Tom’s entire family into his family.
On Oprah Tom said this about the Holmes family:
Tom says Katie’s entire family has become part of his life. “They’re amazing. I love them,” he says. “You see why Kate is such an amazing woman—incredible integrity and strength. They’re family.”

Uhh Mary… Lawyers are certainly NOT a dime a dozen. They are about a million dollars per chargeable hour for a dozen. I know a lot of people who are lawyers (not in the US), it takes a lot of hard work, a lot of integrity, and a lot of nights spent in the office trying to finish papers and prepare for cases, rather than with the family. A lot of sacrifices.

based on what i’ve seen of tc in interviews, he’s glib. i haven’t encountered many people more glib. somehow i don’t imagine tc and mholmes becoming best pals. somehow mholmes doesn’t come across as some starstruck fan. whatever relationship he does hold out i’m sure is probably to hold on to granddaughter and daughter.

and in reference to some of above posts, i don’t necessarily think a post-secondary degree certifies intelligence. there are a lot of stupid people at universities among smart ones.
i think the same applies to the world in general. there are those w/o univ. degrees who know more than those with through self-education and experience. sorry, but tom is not one. whatever his attributes, intelligence has never been one of them.

Oh Hana! Maybe you have posted under different id’s but I am using the same one I came to this site on. Sorry to disappoint,but I share my opinions which have not changed by the way, with one id. I do happen to believe that the Holmes’ have a whole lot of class-something you can not buy or pretend to have. I believe they do support their daughter and as a mother who has watched her grown children make some wrong choices, they are going to be there for her all the way down the road. I do think that in the beginning, KH did fall head over heels in love with Tom or the ‘idea’ of Tom- ‘the biggest moviestar in the world’. Mr Holmes has from the looks of things, had a quite a successful career. The Holmes’ are highly respected and well known in their hometown. Now if someone said actors are a dime a dozen, that would make sense as some actors get success in one movie and poof they are gone. LOL TC has had however, a good long run in his career. Risky Business, in my view would not be the movie of his that I would use to commemorate his career. I would probably have chosen a movie like Top Gun because THAT is the movie that really defined him. No one could have done Maverick like he did. Sort of like John Travolta and Grease, or Patrick Swayze and Dirty Dancing, or Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Terminator. They have all made many movies some good and some not so good including Tom.

Cruise can try to buy as mant friends as he wants. Those who are worth knowing will NOT be bought or swayed by money and what it can buy.
If Cruise wants to endear himself to his in-laws, maybe he should stop using their grand-daughter to promote himself and his silly wife.
It seems Cruise is throwing a lot of money around lately to buy friends and attention: Expensive presents, trips to Napa Valley, offering jobs, etc.

I am sure Katie’s parents are offended by that, especially given the fact her dad is a divorce attorney and has seen dads and moms try to cut the other parent out the lives and replace them with the new spouse.

I don’t think that education equals intelligence or that you have to go to college to be successful. Since we are talking specifically about Tom Cruise I think that it can pretty much be said that he has had a successful career over the last 25 years. That does not necessarily mean he is learned, though. It also does not mean that he isn’t. I do agree that when he is interviewed he can come across as glib. Some might call it smooth…that ability to deflect the spotlight of the issue off of the speaker if the question is too personal or if it makes the person uncomfortable.
As far as Tom’s success of late is concerned according to box office results from a source called boxofficeMojo Lions for Lambs grossed a little over 62 million worldwide, MIIII grossed a little under 400 million worldwide, War of the Worlds grossed a little under 600 million worldwide so comparing that to older stuff like Jerry Maguire that grossed a little under 200 million worldwide and Top Gun that grossed a little under 400 million worldwide then I think it is pretty safe to say that except for Lions for Lambs he has done pretty well even lately. LFL compared to other movies of the time might have done well but matched up against Tom’s other movies it was kind of a bomb. Whether that means anything about his future success it cannot really be said. Time will tell if his future projects will do well.

Lilliane, I agree that Lion for Lambs if not a good indicator of his popularity since people are staying away from war movies. Time will tell whether his antics of the past couple of years has permanently damaged his career. He would do well to pair up with Denzel because Denzel will bring in the crowds.
It’ll come as no surprise that I agree with Anon. He should encourage his kids to see their mother. As much as he might want it to be, Kate is not their mother.

NK took Bella and Conor to the Nickelodeon awards last year, they were in Australia with her on the set of the movie Australia. Pics are online.
For years the talk has been that NK sees her kids in private.

That is what I was about to say Tia let her use her own money to be near them e.g buy a house near them. It is also interesting that one believes that NK is not media hungry and sees her kids in private and is not out of touch with them, then the same person says Tom stops her from seeing them and they are aliened from her.
She either sees her kids or she doesn’t. You can’t have it both ways. A private mother devoted to her kids in private and an injured wife whose ex husband does not allow her to see her kids.
This again supports my point. As long as Tom Cruise is the bad guy, a story will be believed by some people. Like someone who goes to great lengths to prove that Suri is not his child then insists she has his nose.

Why are we second guessing Mr Martin Holmes? He said he likes Tom for Katie. In some of Suri’s last Birthday pictures, they seem to be in deep conversation with Mr Holmes hand on Tom’s back. He has never looked angry, impatient or pissed around Tom. He has stayed with Tom and Katie for several days in CO.
It is one thing to support your daughter no matter what but you do not have to say you like her husband and sing his praises when you don’t. It can be frustrating when people dismiss what you say and purport to think for you.

Lauren, we don’t know if and when NK sees her kids. In the end, it’s her business, not ours. But, TC has taken many an opportunity to tell the world how much his kids love KH. On the other hand, when asked about Nicole, specfically, about seeing her kids, he had one word, “whenever.” He might as well have said “whatever.” He showed a clear lack of respect toward his ex-wife. On the other hand, she has shown nothing but respect towards him.

No Tyler, TC did not have just one word when he responded to the comment of whether he is stopping NK from seeing their kids……….He clearly said they share custody and she could see them whenever. He also repeated it………..She could see them whenever.

He really caught my attention in an interview after the divorce when, in his usual glib manner, he answered that Nicole knew why he divorced her. He was letting the public know know that it wasn’t him, but her that caused the mess. I understand that divorces are hard and messy, but that, my friend, was lack of class. I hope he does look up to his father-in-law. Maybe he’ll learn something.

I don’t know if I’m the few fans of Katie and Tom who is actually also a fan of NK.
I haven’t missed any of her film lately and that includes some of the terrible ones. As a fan of hers she has disappointed me with so many things lately (just like Tom did with his comment about BS and so on), her choice of movies and use of botox to name a few. But one thing that disappointed me more than others was after admiring her so much for being so classy and keeping everything to herself about her life and divorce to Tom for so many years, she started talking about it non-stop in the last few years unlike Tom who has kept it private.
Yes, Tom has said Nicole knows why he divorced her….and from what I got at the time, he was saying she knows (the only other person besides him who needs to) and that it was not anyone else’s business (the media). In the other hand she went on to make fun of him on a talk show and so on.
Regarding Nicole and her children, her best friend was quoted as saying that “She’s already a great mum.”
And from that I think we can all assume she does see her kids and has a good relationship with them. What we see in the media is only 1% of these people’s life!

I couldn’t help myself when I saw Nicole marry Keith who is 5,7′ after making a dig at Tom’s height. But I don’t think Tom is hang up about his height. The press are more hang up about it. He seems like a person very content with who he is unlike many people. I guess it is a way of knocking him to remind him that he doesn’t have it all.

me, i can understand the hurt that might have made nk lash out like that and make that snide height comment shortly after her divorce. though no one except the prinicipal people involved know for sure, that whirlwind publicity campaign for vanilla sky with tom pictured everywhere with penelope cruz right after a 10 year marriage split was extremely thoughtless and provoking. he could DEFINITELY have handled it better, he COULD HAVE been more discreet, it seemed like flaunting it in nk’s face. of course, that’s just MY OPINION. anyways,that’s why i said i could understand the motivation that led nk to make that height comment, at tom.
