Tom Cruise as Edward Scissorhands – What?!

April 18, 2008 by Julie Bonner

Picture this if you can: Tom Cruise as Edward Scissorhands. Johnny Depp, who actually landed this role which shot him to fame, says that Tom Cruise was considered for the role also. I can not see Tom Cruise playing this part at all! He just doesn’t seem like the Edward Scissorhands kind of guy to me. Maybe it’s because Johnny Depp was so brilliant in that movie, that I can’t picture any one else doing it.

He says, “They (movie bosses) were interested in me for the part, but had someone else in mind too. A few days later, they called me to say the studio preferred the other actor.

“(It was) Tom Cruise. I was really disappointed. From the moment I read the script, I knew I had to be in it. But I understood that the studio wanted a box office superstar.

“Then a miracle happened. My agent called to say they wanted me instead.

This is supposedly a true story and true statement from Johnny Depp. You can see it here. What do you think…was this made up?

I am very thankful Johnny did get this role because that’s when his friendship with director Tim Burton started and we all know how many awesome Tim Burton movies he has done!

I have been a fan of Johnny Depp’s since his early days in 21 Jump Street. To me this is such a classic movie and he always makes these rather strange characters come to life. Can’t imagine anyone else as Edward Scissorhands.

  2. Mary says:

I can’t imagine anyone else in that role either.

  3. No One Special says:

Maybe we can morph Edward Scissorhands and Cruise in those Scientology videos of Cruise– LOL!!

  4. Carmen says:

    Good one Special!!! Funny!!

I think Johnny Depp was perfect for the role. I can’t picture Tom in that kind of role, though he did play a good dark character in Interview with the Vampire. The thing about Tom Cruise, is that when he has played a dark or bad guy, he has always been the loveable one. Like, In collateral, even though I knew he was the bad guy, I still liked him. In Interview with the Vampire, I still liked him too. In War of the Worlds, he was a mean dead beat dad, and I ended up liking him anyway. But I loved Scissor hands and I cannot imagine anyone having played it better than Johnny Depp!

would never compare johnny to tommy…ever…I thought that role was made for depp. like around his demeanor. could you see johnny as maverick? I shutter to think it!

  7. PuckHappy says:

Johnny Depp is a GREAT actor that is able to play ALL types of characters. He is able to make you forget that you are watching Johnny Depp and he gets you involved in the actual story that is being told on the screen.
When you tc on the screen, you see Tom Cruise. If you compare all of his roles they are the same person.

  8. PuckHappy says:

I just spent the last 3 days at Disneyland.
Captain Jack Sparrow is featured on “The Pirates of the Caribbean” ride, NOT Edward Scissorhands or even Johnny Depp.

  9. bumblebeej says:

That film started a long relationship between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Did anyone see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? It was genius!

  10. Lauren says:

Love Johnny Depp, Love TC more. I have no doubt TC would have done the role justice. He can do anything. Remember born on the 4th of July? Rain man? But I have to agree Johnny Depp was superb in the role.

  11. DonnerParty says:

Tom play those roles well but neither had the character movement that Edward Scissorhands had. Toms body does not flow the way that character flows. Sorry but tom does not have rhythm to his movements.
Have you ever seen him dance? hehe Even in Cocktail he was flat. just sayin’

  12. concerned mom says:

TC owns Maverick. He just is Maverick, Johnny Depp and the parts he has chosen? Fit him to a tee. When I watched Edward Scissorhands, I didn’t see Johnny Depp. That is great acting.

  13. Doug says:

Johnny Depp reminds me of another fine actor who sometimes doesn’t get his dues in Hollywood. Actor Samuel Jackson has that wonderful ability to morph into each character with great believability with so much great range. Great actor.

  14. Kelly says:

So funny, I dont get the Johnny Depp thing at ALL. I agree, an amazing actor, but I dont get the appeal, and yes, I know I am in the minority on this one.
I guess I like them a bit more clean cut.

  15. concerned mom says:

Oh Doug you are right. I never see Samuel Jackson but his character. And you know another actor who I never saw during the entire movie is Jamie Fox. That movie was like watching Ray Charles himself. That was something like a 3 hour movie and I don’t think I moved once during it. Amazing. I haven’t seen all of Johnny Depp’s movies because frankly some of them are just a bit too strange. LOL

  16. concerned mom says:

My daughter and I were discussing this and she said Johnny Depp gave an interview on the Actor’s Studio. I guess it is a show with just the actor and host on stage and the audience can ask questions too?? Anyway, she said that Johnny Depp said that except for the 21 Jump Street show, he has always chosen parts that he can see some of himself in. Edward Scissorhands was one of his favorite.

  17. Brad Shit says:

Cruise WAS A BETTER AND CONFIRED ACTOR AT THAT TIME.

    DEPP WAS A TV STAR!

Tom didn’t accepted the role because of miscavige scientology leader

Wenn made up this story, of course Depp would nver talk like that, he already said he adore Tom.

  18. Bravestarr says:

Johnny Depp is far different from TC. He always give life to every character he plays. TC just happens to be a superstar at that time but honeslty I find his acting rather flat!. He could never justify Edward Scissorhands role if it was given to him… Thank God for brilliant people who doesn’t go for super stars!

  19. boooomerang says:

I love Tom Cruise in a sense he has his own style of acting but trying to picture him as Edward Scissorhands is a NIGHTMARE!
