Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes - The Shot That Almost Didn’t Happen
During the Tropic Thunder premiere, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes showed some patience and class when a photographer ran into some camera issues. The photog over at BauerGriffinOnline, ran out of space on her memory card right as TomKat was approaching. Instead of passing her by and moving on, they patiently stood there and waited for her to swap out cards. She was able to snap a picture similar to the one above.
The shot then landed on the coveted cover of Life & Style Magazine, which you can see here. Although I cringe at the headline that says, “Living Separate Lives”, because I think it’s totally bogus and untrue, I love hearing some good news about this couple. I have seen time and time again their generosity to their fans and those in the business of taking their picture. They are by far one of the classiest and most professional couples I know.

HAHAHA. Julie, why would that surprise you? I would expect nothing less. LOL.

Didn’t Tom and Katie admit they sleep in separate bedrooms because Tom snores? I would feel fairly separated from my husband if we didn’t even share the same bed - -and especially after less than 2 years of marriage. And for the record, my husband snores. Badly. And we still sleep in the same room and the same bed.

Doesn’t surprise me in the least that they waited for the photographer to change his memory card. They wanted the pictures out there and Bauer Griffin is a huge agency. Their pictures are used everywhere. The fact of the matter is that celebrity is NOT altruistic. It’s a business. Tom and Katie NEED their pictures out there. It’s what they do. If you think otherwise, you don’t know all that much about the business of Hollywood. LOL!

You are right CR, it IS a business and some NEED the hoopla more then others. It is interesting that they waited for the picture, I heard they were the last ones to arrive and had to be quickly ushered in.

Lala: Tom and Katie admitted to no such thing.
Re: The TT premiere. They couldn’t be the last ones to arrive and had to be ushered in because there are pics of Tom with the other cast members from TT and pictures of Katie on the red carpet with Ben Stiller’s wife(Christine Taylor) and with Tobey Maguire.

I don’t think that Tom and Katie needed to wait on that particular photographer to have their pictures at that event out there.
The pictures would have been out there with or without them waiting for her to change her camera card.
Many photo agencies aside from Bauer-Griffin have licensed pics from that premiere.

I’m sure that’s true Mary, however, like it or not, publicity is a necessity for ANY celebrity and being amenable to that is also a necessity. They don’t pose out of the kindness of their hearts. They pose because they need the public to be aware of them and their projects, especially in Tom’s case considering the PR he’s been getting has been quite negative in recent years. I’m sure he wanted to be as accomodating as possible in support of his most recent project. It’s part of the job and Tom and Katie do their jobs very effectively.
Also, I’m sure many large photo agencies were there, but Bauer Griffin is one of the largest out there. I would think Tom and Katie would be very accomodating to them as well as agencies like Splash….etc.

Charlotte Rose:Being accomodating to the paps is not something that is new to Tom, he has always been that way. That hasn’t changed even with all the negative press he’s had these past three years.
In the link Julie posted the pap responsible for the Bauer-Griffin credited picture speaks of how gracious both he and Katie are.
Many of the pics that Julie post here are credited to equally large agencies such as Newscon, wireimage and Getty Images.

Mary,
I didn’t say Tom being accomodating to the press was new. I know he’s always been that way. He’s extremely PR savvy which is the entire point of being accomodating. Not sure what your point is beyond that.
Mine is that Hollywood and Celebrity are businesses just like any other and are used to promote a product. Like it or not, Tom Cruise is a brand (or a product). It’s in Tom (and Katie’s) best interest to be polite to the photographers. That doesn’t mean they aren’t nice in general, but their motives are probably not ENTIRELY altruistic. That’s just reality!!
By the way, Newscom is NOT a photo agency. They buy photo’s from other agencies and post them. They’re more of a collection point. Alot of PR agencies use them.

Charlotte Rose: Thanks for the info on Newscom. I did not know that about them.
The motives may not be entirely altruistic but it is still nice to see that in a time when the paparazzi have now become more stalkerazzi, It is still possible for a celebrity to be gracious even under
pressure.

I agree on the point of “stalkerazzi”, but they can hardly be called that when they’re at a premiere! However, when they follow certain entertainers around, they certainly are stalkers and I believe there’s a need for laws protecting certain celebrities….but that’s another topic, isn’t it? LOL!
It’s a mutually symbiotic relationship between the celebrities and the photographers. They need each other so they put up with one another. Again, that doesn’t mean Tom and Katie are not polite. As a matter of fact, I’ve always heard from people who have worked with him that Tom is polite, if a bit distant. I can’t say from personal experience. I have never worked with him myself. Almost did once, but I pulled out in favor of another project that was more interesting to me based on my field.
It’s in his best interest to be polite to photogs. IF he’s nice, they tend to be nice. In short, it’s part of the job and it’s smart to be polite and easy to deal with. When he needs a favor or would prefer pictures are not taken, it’s more likely that they’ll work with him as well.
As always Mary, it’s a pleasure speaking with you. You’re always so polite and I really appreciate that. Have a good day!

I think Tom craves attention of any sort. Katie just goes along for the ride. If you notice, when she’s with him she’s all smiles and when she’s alone, or with Suri, she’s quite somber. The differences are quite stark.
She’s very well aware that her noteriety is tied to his and obviously knows what he expects of her when they’re out in public.

As usual those who want to thinkt he worst of Tom Cruise will think the worst no matter what. He could capture Bin Laden and they would still say he was attention seeking. Even before he met Katie, he was always gracious to every one be it co workers or the paparazzi. I guess it doesn’t fit the image of ‘Cruise the monster’ so they will spin it. Heck,I find this discussion useless and as usual tiring.

He’s not a monster, but he loves the limelight. My issues with him are of a nature that I’m prohibited from discussing here.
He lights up when the cameras are on him. Noone can deny that. Katie acts the same way only when she’s with him. And, he’s gracious because he usually calls the shots when he’s in public. When things have not gone according to his plan, he was hardly gracious. Unfortunately, for the guy it only took a couple of those instances to turn him into a tabloid icon.

He lights up when he speaks about his family……
He lights up more so when he speaks about his wife and his children. (He has said before that he has three beautiful children when reporters only want to focus on Suri.)
He lights up when he speaks of his mother and his sisters and the sacrifices his mother made for him and his sisters.
He lights up when he reflects on how far he’s come when he was never given a chance at succeeding.
He lights up when he speaks of his wife’s family and how much he loves them and where katie gets her strength from.
He’s gracious because he’s always been and if one is to let a moment from almost four years ago define a man’s entire life even though those directly involved in that moment have long since let it go there is nothing that TC can do about that but live his life his with the integrity he knows he has.
Katie has been gracious to the paps when on her own as well.
Tyler please tell me how it is possible to control candid moments in public, which no one has any control over.

Since Bauer-Griffin has done a lot of flattering pictures of this couple, I am certain they would have been gracious about waiting to get the shots done. Especially at a premiere or red carpet event.. Celebs go to those things to be seen and photographed.

Mary,
I don’t doubt that he lights up when speaking of his family. That doesn’t change the fact that he loves the limelight!!
Like I said, my issues with him are very serious and of a nature that I’m not allowed to discuss here. I actually try to keep it light here.

Tyler: Going about your business should not equate to loving the limelight.
I think he deals with it in such a way that he makes it seem easy. I don’t think be loves it, I think he deals with it!
I think many would be hard pressed to have endured what Cruise and his family, colleagues and friends have had to endure with him these almost four years.
Through it all he has handled it with patience, integrity and dignity and for that he will always
have my respect!

Mary, you use “I think” alot so your words are only a matter of opinion. Obviously, “I think” differently than you do, but then we’re allowed to disagree, correct?
Mary
Aug 26, 2008 at 4:50 pm
Off topic but I have always loved this quote from Descartes……..” I think therefore I am.”
Tyler: Of course we’re allowed to disagree. Differing opinions is what makes discussion interesting. Don’t you think?
I write I think because it’s my opinion only.

Mary,
Sorry, I thought you were rebutting my comments, so to speak.
Isn’t it amazing how people can look at the same picture and see two entirely different things :)

Out on a limb here, but I loved Katie’s dress and look.. Tom needed to put that tired old casual look thing to bed. He has looked pretty good in some recent pics but not in this particular get-up. Is he going for casual movie mogul or super cool movie dude??? Here she is dressed to the nines and well he isn’t.

Lauren, are you this much of a sweetheart in the ‘real’ world?? LOL I say real world because my girls don’t consider my online chatting as ‘real’ world since online people can be anything or any type of person they want to be. You for instance, Lauren, could be a caring loving friend or family member in the ‘real’ world..
