Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Attend “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy’ Costume Institute Gala”

On May 5th, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes attended the “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy’ Costume Institute Gala” at The Metropolitan Museum in New York City.
Some are saying that Katie Holmes’ outfit was a disaster, while others are saying she wowed the crowd. There also seems to be mixed reports about her dress being red or tangerine orange. It looks red to me, but the shiny fabric makes it hard to tell in the pictures.
What was the real big talk of the night as far as Katie’s outfit? Well, her shoes of course! Did she wear the traditional black shoes? Not a chance! She wore a pair of blue Christian Louboutin shoes. You can see an up close picture of them here.
I am loving the blue shoes she wore. Why not just go for it when it comes to fashion? Katie definitely did that!

I think Katie likes red. I often see her and Suri wearing red. Although here they say she wears tangerine-orange dress but still the color is close to red. Suri always looks so darling in red dress.
Well now we have a thread to actually discuss this outfit. As I have said I really like the dress, it just needed to touch the floor like everyone else’s that had on a long gown. Then we would have just gotten a peek at the blue shoes which I also have no problem with-odd choice. This would be the dress that I think she could have worn those GOLD shoes with that she wore a while back. If she pays a stylist $5 grand a day to dress her, that person is SO not earning their money. I would like to see Katie dressing younger and having more fun.
Hi concerned mom… I’m definitely one who believes that a long gown with a wide (semi full) skirt is designed to sweep the floor. If it doesn’t, it actually throws the balance off both the body and the dress. Katie is so tall… she obviously likes long dresses, but this is the third time she’s come out in a dress that shows off her feet and ankles, and it looks plain odd. (Here, at the Becks/Posh welcome party, and at the French Fashion Week show in late 06).
And I agree, the shoes would have worked if they had indeed just been a ‘peep’.
I don’t understand why she can’t get her gowns tailored to fit her height - they are all haute couture after all. It’s bad on the part of the designers too (unless she doesn’t get her clothes direct from the designers, as other stars do).
I don’t know about the height of the dress, but I did like the color and it looks very nice on her. And I think she was one of the few celebs who actually followed the superheroes theme.
I really like this dress AND the shoes with it. I think it all works beautifully together. I think her hair looks shiny and sleek and I love her necklace.
It was a celebrity prom, plain and simple! I don’t see how any of them dressed to theme.

It’s unanimous. The dress was too short. She does look good in red though. On the other hand, the red makeup around her face makes her look bruised. As for the shoes, I already said I’m not going there, and I’m sticking to it LOL.
She looked very painted up, but seemed to work with the fantasy theme, and overall I’d say she looked good.
I like Naomi Watts the best. Don’t know how she does it, but she’s always classy.
I am REELING with envy!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must say yet again……. I am so in love with her new haircut, the totally awesome red hue make up, and that INCREDIBLE gown…..could she be ANY hotter!!!! TC looks like he is about to ravish her in some of those pics……I am totally jealous. I love the blue stilettos…….yet, another poster made a great suggestion…..she wrote that the gown would look better with a gold strappy sandal…..and after reflection on her comment I agree…..that gown would rock better if she paired it with a golden shoe….in any event…..I love the entire look…..her arms even look amazing…….very sculpted…..I know I sound like I am in love with her…..but at times she looks very tired and plain but when I see her like this….all I can say is WOW….you go girl!!!!!

ahhhhh, so the theme was superheroes! well, in that case, i think the shoes go PERFECTLY with the dress…. the red and blue colour scheme, like superman and spiderman and supergirl (any others?)…..even the hair works in this light with the dress, though i can’t think of a superhero off the top of my head who had that hair! superhuman, superorange, supergelled.
how come none of the other celebrities seemed to be playing with the theme though? i may be wrong, but everyone else looked just elegant and classy.
and tom doesn’t look like a superhero there!

None of the men looked like superheroes, even the evening’s male hosts.

that’s prob why katie drew so much attention with the wonder woman colors. she left her ego at home. i don’t know if i could have done it, but i applaud her for it.
Tyler am not sure whether that is why Katie drew attention I think she did simply because she and Tom are a huge media draw now, call them a flavour of the month (make that the last three years) and she was actually very smart, the dress is beautiful. People who were there, journalists said she was actually very captivating. Beckham’s outfit was a miss but no where near how much the media exaggerated. I loved what Julia Roberts and Eva Longoria wore.
I’m confident that those blue shoes had a lot to do with the attention she got - and the red face makeup, which may have looked better in person than it did in pictures. She was the only one that came in costume, except for Posh who looked really awful. I read both pros and cons so not buying that all journalists were captivated. I do agree about Eva Longoria, but she always looks great - nothing new. Don’t remember seeing any pics of Julia Roberts.

Julia Roberts and Goerge Clooney hosted the evening. I saw pictures of them hugging with Tom and Katie. I find nothing wrong with her makeup. Infact I love it! Wasn’t sure about the blue shoes but they do have a red strip and I believe the dress have some blue camouflage.
Tom sure likes to use the repeated poses with all of his long string of wives.
Katie looked so classy elegant on that red long dress. She really looks fabulous in red. Love the hair… Tom must be so proud of her!
