New Valkyrie Pictures

April 1, 2008 by Julie Bonner

Empire has exclusive new pictures of Tom Cruise’s movie Valkyrie. You can view them here. Valkyrie is said to hit theaters on October 3, 2008. Here’s the synopsis:

At the height of WW2, a group of high-ranking German officers hatched a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and seize power of the military command in order to end the war. The operation was codenamed “Valkyrie”, for the emergency plan that was meant to be used in case of a revolt against the Nazi government. This plan had been modified by the conspirators to ensure their success, but for various reasons the plot failed when finally carried out on 20 July 1944. The conspirators of the inner circle were shot after a kangaroo trial or sentenced to death soon after.

I will not see this movie for two different reasons. One of which the story just plain does not interest me.

  2. Lilianne says:

I will not see this movie either mainly because I have no interest in the subject. War movies don’t really do it for me and the other reason I wont see it is because Tom really doesnt do it for me either. Not that he would care about my opinion but if I could talk to him I would encourage him to get a different hairstyle.

  3. amy says:

i won’t be seeing this movie either, but the reason for me is that i just don’t like tom cruise

  4. kaykaywife says:

Clearly i will nOt be $eeing this movie either beCause Of obviou$ reasons!

  5. Mary says:

My reasons for wanting to see it are different from all of the above.
    Valkyrie is a thriller.
The story of Stauffenberg and what he tried to do to stop Hitler’s madness is one of the most compelling I have read………….even within Hitler’s own ranks they were those who had the courage to try and do something.

  6. PuckHappy says:

Really? A thriller? I never heard of it as a “thriller”. I always thought of it as just part of history. Another failed attempt to kill Hilter and then Hilter turning the tables and killing his would be killer. He was such a EVIL person. He was into mind control and would kill anyone that did not think and do as he told them to do. His own people would spout nothing but praise for the man for fear for their own lives.

My German relatives see any movie that is made about that serial killer as a way of promoting him.

  7. No One Special says:

I will not see the movie. I am very picky about time and money. I agree Puck, I can’t view it because the genocidal maniac wins. Sorry, but with the economy the way it is and life, I don’t need to be depressed any further. Besides there are a lot of action/adventure movies that will be much more entertaining to watch: Batman sequel, WANTED, PRINCE CASPIAN (Chronicles of Narnia), etc.

Unfortunately for Cruise, the critics who previewed it are not expecting much from it. They also said the movie preview is misleading in what it is about. Hopefully Cruise and UA will break even on the $90 plus million movie because that is a lot to loose.

  8. No One Special says:

Surprised no one is gushing about this: LIONS FOR THE LAMBS comes out today (?) on DVD. It might be next week.

Either way, I know it is today or next week. Julie probably knows.

Still haven’t seen it, but Streep and Redford are two icons to reckon with in a movie.

    Anyone else seen it yet.

  9. Lilianne says:

I have not seen Lions for Lambs and have no intention of seeing it. I am also picky about my time and my money these days and will not waste either on something I know I will not like.

  10. bonnie says:

my opinion is that TC should think about joining his wife’s (or is it GF’s?) Valentino clothing design business (or is it Armani?) and quit the making movie idea.
best TC movies are the great videos about him.

  11. anna says:

Almost everything I’ve read about Valkyrie refers to it as a thriller. The director and writer last worked together on The Usual Suspects that I really liked and this has a great cast so I am looking forward to it.

Think Lions for Lambs comes out April 8.

  12. PuckHappy says:

I have not seen LfL. At this point I do not plan on seeing it. Mostly because of where the money goes. But also the story line.

  13. PuckHappy says:

I really like that all opinions are being posted here.
Like how Mary referred to “V” as a thriller. I am going to go back and look at it again to see if I see what she sees in the story.
    Should be interesting.

  14. Mary says:

PuckHappy also note that Operation Valkyrie was planned as an operation from within so that Hilter’s army would never know it was being overthrown.

The script for Valkyrie has been labelled as brilliant.
The only criticism I have read is about the actors using their native accents.

  15. Mary says:

Stauffenberg’s story was hardly known outside of Germany.
It will now be known to a wider audience………….The story deserves it.

  16. Kelliquest says:

I am not sure if the movie would interest me? I wish I had time at night to see movies.

I did just see “Into the Wild” and “I am Legend”. Has anyone seen those? They were great! Two totally different movies, but I loved Into the Wild and I am Legend was scary.

  17. bumblebeej says:

I don’t like native accents in period films or films set in other countries. I’m not a Brit, nor American, but I do think the British accent (received pronounciation) is flat enough and classical enough to carry a film without anyone *noticing* accents. The american, Australian, NZ, canadian and even Irish and Scottish accents are so noticeable, that when you watch the film, they distract the whole way. I know the US is a huge audience but there are non Americans who watch films too (also a huge audience), and this is a global market… I love Robin Hood Prince of Theives, but I’ve only seen it a couple of times because of the accents. Ditto with Marie Antoinette. Actors are paid the big bucks to act. Part of acting is the accent.

  18. Mary says:

In Valkyrie it was the director’s decision to have ALL the actors deliver the dialogue in their native accents.

I wasn’t at all distracted by it when I watched the Valkyrie trailer and doubt I will be when I finally do see the movie in it’s entirety.

  19. Sydney says:

I think I’ll have to pass on this one. With things going the way they are around the world and in our own backyards, I’m not much into the military mode of movie. I just lost a foster brother in Afghan. I think I’ll be going for a different genre. Plus, caught the trailer and wasn’t very impressed.

  20. Mary says:

Sydney…………..I’m so sorry for your loss.

Valkyrie is not a movie about war. It’s a movie about courage.

  21. PuckHappy says:

I don’t think courage is a good word to use when talking about someone that uses mind control technics on the meek.

  22. Mary says:

I was talking about the character of Stauffenberg in his decision to do something about Hitler.

  23. Clare says:

Of course I will see this movie. It is a thriller and from the trailer it seems very promising. Missed Lions for Lambs. Can’t stadn war on terror stuff.

It is funny how the non-fans are quick to say they will not see the movie as if any one thought they were going to see it. LOL. Your feelings for Tom Cruise have been very clear thank you. I doubt though whether it will change Tom’s wallet.

  24. No One Special says:

Sydney: Sorry for your lose!! It has to be hard.

  25. No One Special says:

Mary: I saw both movies. The problem is I read the books that go with both. Neither followed the book. I AM LEGEND actually changed a lot, including the ending. It was also a remake of a remake. Neither remakes did very well. The only reason this one did is because of Will Smith.

INTO THE WILD, they neglected to mention that the guy cut off his only link to outside and to the place that had food stored when he destroyed a National Park station and cut a elevator/rope system that crossed the river that trapped him during the Spring run-off. He also almost died on his trip down the CO River–dehydration crossing the desert in Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. I think the makers of that movie had an ax to grind against parental types and those who lived the conventional life.

  26. No One Special says:

I heard that the decision to deliver the dialogue in native accents was because some of the main characters/actors couldn’t do an accent to save their lives.

  27. Sydney says:

Thank everyone for your kindness; even though we may not always agree on things, I love coming to this site to just get away for a little while; it’s fun to hear everyone’s opinions and also participate.

  28. Mary says:

No One Special – It wasn’t me who asked the question about I Am Legend and Into The Wild…. it was Kelliquest but thanks for the review of both.

I find it surprising that many of the main characters/ actors couldn’t do accents for Valkyrie because if i recall correctly many if not all have done accents in other movies/plays.
I personally don’t think the accents matter, it is made very clear that you are watching a movie of a German hero with a very compelling, riveting story.

  29. Julie says:

I won’t go see Valkyrie either. It just doesn’t interest me, yes, even though I am a fan of most of Tom’s movie. ;)

Maybe I’ll rent in on DVD.

  30. Zoe says:

Saw LFL, unfortunately the cast..great..the movie..poorly written by matthew michael carnahan. however, he also wrote the kingdom, which was amazing… he really screwed up LFL, it had such potential. And I think since so many people hated LFL, the Kingdom ended up not doing as well, but if you havent seen it, rent it…its great.

I was actually disappointed TC took that role in LFL.

I will see Valkyrie. I think it looks pretty good, but I have to read more.

  31. Zoe says:

LFL….But TC got caught up in the redford/steep opportunity, and he is an actor, can you blame him?

Well actually this group probably could! :)

  32. Kelliquest says:

No one special: I had no idea about that in “Into the Wild”. That is crazy! That would have made the movie a stink for me. I guess that is hollywood for you! How sad….he basically slowly killed himself.

  33. tyler says:

    Pass.

  34. No One Special says:

Kelli: He did intend to live off the land in Alaska. He destroyed the Natl Park Service Station because he saw it as the GOVT destroying the land. He also had issues with authority figures. They said if he hadn’t done that he would not have starved to death and could have gotten help.

So yeah…his arrogance slowly killed him.

  35. clare says:

I had no problem with Tom taking part in LFL. Some one has to make movies like that. I have to admit that I thought it was arrogant of them to open a studio with it. They took people for granted. The studio though has funding and all it needs is a good blockbuster to kick start it. I trust Tom Cruise, he has a good head on his shoulders.

They are many reasons am going to watch Valkyrie and not least because am a fan of Singer. I also think it is a good story.

Fox and some people have waged a war against it. I am still going to watch it because I think it will be money well spent.

  36. bumblebeej says:

OKay maybe it’s just non-Americans who are disconcerted by American accents in films that are set outside of America.

But the subject matter oh Val doesn’t appeal to me. Every city I go to near where I live has memorials of atrocities committed either by the Nazis or by the communist governments. I’d rather save my cinema money to visit museums where I can see what happened first hand, and try to understand the real personal perspective.

If any of you ever go to Budapest, there are two fantastic museums: the Holocaust Museum is educational and moving. It reduced my friend to tears (no joke, I found her in the toilet crying). And the House of Terror taught me more about the Nazis and the communist secret police than any movie will tell me. Similarly, in Germany, the concentration camp memorial at Dachau (suburb of Munich) is free to visit and equally sad and moving.

As I’m writing this, I can see why the filming of the movie in Germany was controversial (not only because of Scieo stuff). (This is just my opinion…!) I think the German psyche is very mixed up about their past, and it is still something that most Germans struggle to deal with every day. Especially because I get the idea the West looks down on Germany if they try to celebrate their war dead (think of all the fathers and grandfathers who were drafted and died in the Nazi army, who weren’t evil, just normal people fighting for their country).

For Hollywood to come waltzing into the country to film a movie that they probably could have filmed in LA, making a movie about a futile attempt to kill Hitler, and waltz back out again, might have been a little insensitive.

Are there any Germans out there who can shed any light on my opinion?

  37. Zoe says:

I am not German Bumble, but I see your point and agree with you.

Not all Westerns are down on Germans( I am one), we all have our tales of survival and loss. And should have compassion for the different stories.

I think it is sad when people can only view things from their perspective.

I can see why the Germans would feel that way, but I bet some of the protesters who were in charge met Tom, and that is why they allowed them to continue filming. He is quite charming and convincing.

But I agree with your Hollywood comment, it is a strange place and they do tend to be quite arrogant about their rules and desires. I wonder exactly how they handled the plight. All I saw was one day they said no way and the “next “they had given their OK.

  38. Hana says:

Zoe, didn’t the movie Kingdom came out before LFL?!

I’ve seen LFL and I agree with you it had potential and great casts.

  39. DonnerParty says:

When a movie based on a true story comes out, I think many people fear that the movie will re-write history.
And with the main character speaking with a California accent that fear might be coming true.
Tom made the movie in Germany in hopes of showing the German people that he is a good person. He is hoping to get the Germans to see COS as something other then a Cult.
Everyone that has ever worked with tom never says anything negative about him.

  40. tyler says:

i haven’t followed this movie at all, but didn’t they shoot the movie in germany in order to show actual sites where the events happened? one would assume so, otherwise why go to all the added expense, especially when they were unwelcome.

  41. zoe says:

Hana- maybe? I saw LFL first, so maybe it was just my midinformation! Sorry!

  42. Mary says:

There is a script review for Valkyrie. The review labeled the script as excellent.

……..The McQuarrie-Alexander script is described as excellent – with suspense, honor, horror, and history all mixed in together. To some of us it will be heroic history, to youngsters it will be a thriller.

Here is what was said about filming in Germany:

And even though we could shoot the movie anywhere in the world, we believe Germany is the only place we can truly do the story justice.”

  43. Zoe says:

Mary: where did you read that review?
