Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes Helped Make the Cupcake the Latest Trend

by Julie on June 27th, 2008

No, you are not going blind, cross-eyed or crazy…the above picture is not of Katie Holmes, but instead Jessica Alba. :D Why do I have a picture of Jessica Alba on here? Well for one, I couldn’t find any pictures of Katie Holmes that I needed for this story and two, I wanted to show you that cupcakes have indeed become the latest Hollywood trend. Ms. Alba is holding a box of Sprinkles cupcakes. If you’ll remember, Katie Holmes ordered a bunch of Sprinkles cupcakes for Suri Cruise’s latest birthday party.

I was reading a story in CBS4Denver, and they were talking about the latest food trend that is taking parties everywhere by storm.  Yep, it’s the cupcake.

The story said that stars like Katie Holmes and Jennifer Love Hewitt have made cupcakes more popular than ever. Hollywood magazines report that cupcakes have become the latest trend at glitzy wrap parties.

Cupcakes definitely bring a lot of us back to our childhood. They are affordable and you can even make them yourselves. Geez, I haven’t had breakfast yet and now I am craving a cupcake with tons of cream cheese icing on top. Yum. :D

    Julie,
Honestly, that’s really reaching. Cupcakes are popular where I live too and believe me, Katie and Jennifer had nothing to do with it. Cute story tho.

Tia, the only picture of that set I had seen was the one where he was holding her hair while she blew on the candles. Really cute set of pics.

Jessica’s gorgeous, can’t wait to see her baby, hey, why not make this a Jessica fan website, people would have much nicer things to say, less toxic.

I love, love those pictures too. Whenever I think of cupcakes, I think of Katie. She has always loved them.

I think Katie might have started the trend up again in Hollywood. Even back to her filming Mad Money days, she had a passion for Sprinkles and even had them shipped to the set there in LA. It is sort of one of those things no one thinks about but when someone serves it rather than a full-sized cake, you think-oh yeah nice…..LOL

If things don’t work out on Broadway for Katie, hopefully they will, she can make lots of cupcakes in her great kitchen and sell them! I’m sure Suri would love to bake with her Mom.

CM: I went to a wedding several years ago, before KH became a tabloid sensation, that served cupcakes instead of a wedding cake. Are you saying KH made Sprinkle’s famous????

Didn’t Katie invent the cupcake??? LOL.

I agree with Con Mom, I think she has made them a Hollywood trend again and also, cupcake bakeries are showing up all over the place. I think Hollywood has something to do with that.

I like cupcakes sometimes better than cake itself. I got the recipe for the cupcakes at NYC’s Magnolia bakery and made them recently for a friend for her birthday! I’m not much of a frosting person, so i just put the frosting out and various sprinkles, and it was a blast! :)

Cupcakes are actually the only dessert (aside from no-bakes, which don’t really count) that I can make FROM SCRATCH well. :) They draw my neighbors in faster than flies (which actually never come in, not a lot of flies in NC, lol!)

Tyler: I don’t think Katie necessarily made cupcakes famous (because honestly, who doesnt like a good cupcake?) but in an industry that’s all about size/weight and eating tiny meals, she made cupcakes, how shall I say, acceptable to love openly. She made it trendy to dine on these sugary delights! :)

(oh, and my post above should say about the frosting, that I put the frosting & sprinkles out, and let everyone decorate their own… I have a habit of not fully typing a thought, and not realizing until AFTER I’ve hit submit, LOL!!)

It would be interesting to hear from the owners of Sprinkles on how KH impacted their sales. Julie, since news is slow, can you make it happen?

Weight Watchers is what made cupcakes a big hit. It is one way to have your cake and eat it too!
One CC is ONE serving and stopping at one, you do not over eat! Easier to count the points of a CC vs. regular cake.
We were lined up at Sprinkles the day it opened back in the beginning of 2005. YUM! They were sold out in the first hour.

Thanks to Oprah and the man that opened “Cake Love” in DC a few years back for me. He brought the cupcake back in my book. He was a lawyer and didn’t like it….opened up a bakery in DC (always wanted to) and is so happy he did. When I went to DC I went in and got one and they are delicious!

it’s amazing and such an honor to Katie that she’s popularized cupcakes, such an achievement.

Kelliquest - I think I have heard of the guy you speak of. Didn’t he get a show on the food network called “Sugar Rush”?

Tyler - I wouldn’t want Sprinkles to get sued giving me information on Katie’s cupcake consumption, lol. Totally kidding.

But, maybe they could send me some free cupcakes and I could give them a raving review here.

PuckHappy - you’ve been to Sprinkles?? No fair! :)

Mary: Please tell me you are being sarcastic.

Anyway: I doubt Katie is responsible for this trend. It was happening everywhere when she mentioned she loved cupcakes and became the new honey in Cruise’s life.

    Julie, that was good :)
They’re opening a Sprinkles about a mile from where I live. Don’t know whether this is good or bad.

Anon, what do you think, that’s the only way to get on without being deleted. Cupcakes? I can’t believe this is newsworthy but I guess that’s what she’s come to.

    Where’s the other nicer Mary?

you’re right mary, it’s not newsworthy, that’s why it’s so sad, she has no control on what is said or writen, so arn’t you the lucky one.

Hi Annie…………………Katie and Tom have no control over what’s written but if you’re in the position that many of these tabloids find themselves you grasp at anything, even the most mundane.

Sprinkles has benefited greatly by the celebrities who can’t seem to get enough of their cupcakes and has gone so far as to use their quotes in their press:

“There’s a place on Little Santa Monica called Sprinkles. My mouth is already salivating.” - Katie Holmes.
