Katie and Suri Take a Break on “The Romantics” Set

November 5, 2009 by Julie Bonner

Sure enough! Katie Holmes has started filming “The Romantics” in New York. It was just announced on November 2nd that Katie replaced Liv Tyler for the indie film and they have already started filming.

Here’s a picture of Katie and Suri taking a bottle break on set.

Katie Holmes, Suri Cruise

And yes, Suri is still drinking from a bottle. We can analyze this one upside down and inside out for days, weeks and months. Some are appalled ,and while I didn’t still have my kids on a bottle at this age and I personally don’t think it’s a good idea, please try to be respectful in your comments.

Us moms are supposed to support each other in this journey of motherhood, not bash each other. We can offer up advice, which I think moms should do for each other, but it’s when it gets rude that it starts to bother me. If a mom is physically or emotionally hurting their child, then that’s a whole other issue.

I believe Katie is a good mom and is doing what she thinks is best for Suri.

Anyway, back to the real news here…the movie! It is good to see Katie working again and she is all smiles, which is exactly what we saw from her when she was in Australia shooting “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”. Katie is obviously very happy when she is working and I am so excited for her!

Julie, I like what you mentioned about not bashing other moms. I have 2 points to make that I think are noteworthy. 1) The fact that Katie allows Suri to have a bottle is not a big deal. I am a speech therapist. As long as the child CAN drink from a cup and straw, then it does not hurt her development. Many mothers allow milk from the bottle beyond 1 year of age. Even the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until age 2! So, clearly, being “on the nipple” longer than may be typical in American culture is NOT a big deal, as long as the child has proper oral-motor development and can drink from a cup and straw. 2) The fact that Katie allows her to do this IN PUBLIC clearly flies in the face of all the posters who say that Katie is a publicity hog. If she cared about publicity, she’d be more likely NOT to allow Suri to drink the bottle in public where photos can be taken and folks will likely harp on the “bottle thing”. Clearly, she is not concerned about the paparazzi one way or the other. She is living her life and mothering her daughter genuinely in the way she feels best, without worrying about the photographs. For that, I respect that she is a strong woman with a mind of her own…doing pretty well for all the crazy people that follow her around just to make a quick buck with their cameras. Anyhow, good for her. :)

  2. Just My Opinion says:

M: I do NOT think Katie thought someone was taking these pictures
of herself and Suri as she was giving Suri a bottle because they
were taken with a LONG CAMERA LEN. Suri had not been photographed
with a bottle in public for a while. RECENTLY we saw a picture of
a scared or upset Suri getting out of a car in an underground parking
garage wrapped in a blanket, sucking on a bottle, and holding her
stuffed animal in one hand and her bottle in the other & being
carried by Tom Cruise. That picture was taken with a LONG LENS
    camera.

But I think the gossip, rumors about Suri not being potty trained,
still drinking from a bottle, and carrying blankets, etc., IS
UPSETTING to Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes and that is why we started
seeing Suri carrying a sippy cup. Had there not been an uproar about
Suri still drinking from a bottle they probably would have let her
continue to drink from the bottle and not a sippy cup.

But I think Suri has moments where she seems to regress to being an
infant. Could it be because AGAIN she has moved from another city,
Boston to Long Island, New York. Surely Suri does not do the packing
but I am certain she sees or hears people discussing that they are
leaving Boston. Surely they have people that pack their belongings,
etc., but I am certain they tell Suri “we are leaving Boston and
going to New York.” Who knows how that makes her feel? She certainly
is very familiar with airplanes and helicopters because she’s been
in them a lot of the time.

Think about it, this year alone, Suri has been to New York, Los Angeles,
Tokyo, Brazil, Australia, back to Los Angeles, then to Boston, back to
Los Angeles, back to Boston, and now Long Island, New York. And these
are trips that we are aware of because she was photographed in these
places, these are not rumors. How many other trips has Suri taken that
    we weren’t aware of.

I think what is certain here is that Suri does NOT have a stable home
life. I think that is one of the reasons she still hangs on to her
bottle, is not potty trained, and needs her blankets. I think these
things give her comfort and she probably throws a tantrum if she doesn’t
    get them.

Katie is right in the beginning of filming a new movie. This means she
had to prepare for this part (read and learn her lines, etc). She also
just launched a new clothing line and finished that other movie in Australia.
One gets the feeling that she is on a deadline to get as many things done
as possible. I think she should concentrate on her daughter a bit more.

  3. Lilianne says:

I have a hard time with Suri, who is almost 4, being allowed to drink from a baby bottle but she dresses like a miniature adult and wears heels. I don’t agree with a child this age being on a bottle or not being potty trained(not sure if she is or isn’t) but it isn’t necessarily the end of the world or harming her in any way. What I find confusing is that she carries purses, wears fancy dresses and little cardigans, has her nails painted and wears heels, all of which reflect maturity while she still sucks a bottle and clings to a blanket. I know some will say that she is just girlie. And ok, maybe so. But we rarely see her being dressed like a CHILD, even if that means she is still wearing dresses. Do you understand what I mean? She can still be dressed up and look girlie but her clothing could look like something a child would wear…NOT something a woman would wear.

I understand Julie’s point about Moms supporting each other and not tearing each other down but I don’t think that pointing out possible mistakes to a fellow mother as tearing her down. Everyone has different levels of experience with parenting and some “get it” faster than others. I don’t know….I just have a real problem with the bottle and the clothing. They don’t go together. She is either growing up or she isn’t.

  4. Mary says:

I believe that Tom and Katie are doing what they know is best for Suri. She is their child.

Her stability lies in the fact that she is always with one or both of her parents. They always, always both make time for her. She goes where they go and seems to adapt rather quickly wherever that takes her.
She seems to be a very happy, friendly, carefree child and from my observation of her when Katie was on Broadway for All My Sons…..A child who is very aware of things around her and very well behaved even with the screaming fans outside the theater.

The bags we see her with are not designer bags but bags such as Hello Kitty, Disney and the like. She loves her dresses whether they be from The Gap, Kohl’s, Juicy Couture kids, Bonpoint etc and her Princess dresses including the heels and her shoes mostly though her Mary-Jane’s.
I think most girlie-girls and her parents have said she is definitely that enjoy having their fingers painted etc.

I’m acquainted with children who held on to their baby blankets until the age of six and in some cases past that and have turned out quite well. :)
It seems to me that the bottle in Suri’s case is used occasionally and I’m guessing here, maybe at nap time. She is so often pictured and we see her with cups, water bottles as well.

Tom has said that Suri is a very friendly child and he doesn’t want for his children to fear anything therefore he overlooks the paparazzi intrusion.
I also think that Tom and Katie know to what lengths the paps will go for a pic and don’t care…………….They are trying to give Suri as normal an upbringing as is possible.

With Tom and Katie it seems that the entire world wants to tell them exactly how to raise their child, a child most people are familiar with only from pictures…………….That tells you nothing!

  5. Lilianne says:

Never mind…it seems that my point was missed entirely. I am NOT trying to tell Tom and Katie how to raise their child or that I think I know what is best for her. I also wasn’t trying to imply that Suri walks around with designer bags hanging from her shoulder with her hair styled impeccably. Only that we rarely see her dressed like a child with simple cotton shirts and cute jumpers with flowers on them or ponies or something like that. She wears things that look like something a grown woman would wear all while she sucks a bottle. That part is a little confusing to me. Let her suck her bottle and hold her blankie all she wants. Or let her wear all the grown up looking designer clothings she wants. But for her to do both often at the same time is for me a little odd. My own daughter sucked a pacifier until she was 4(only at bed and naptimes) but she wasn’t going around wearing heels while she did it. Thats it…my whole point…if her parents want to keep her a baby for as long as they can then they should! But it might be confusing for her to be dressing like a little woman while they are doing that.

  6. Mary says:

Lilianne………..I didn’t miss your point at all and I almost always agree with your insights but……..
Please tell me what you find so womanly in Suri’s dressing. The heels?
There was a statement issued by Tom and Katie saying that the heels were her dance shoes.

  7. kit says:

The bottle thing is going to be a problem – trust me on that one.

She’ll want it as long as they’ll let her have it, or until she’s old enough to be embarrassed by it.

I agree completely!! In addition, using a bottle at the age of 3 1/2 is NOT healthy for the teeth and not recommended by pediatricians. Google it if you’re unsure. No one is trying to tell Katie or Tom how to raise their child. I don’t think they read this little blog. LOL!! It’s very, very unusual to see a child Suri’s age with an Infant Nurser, which is what she’s holding. It goes against the norm and what’s recommended so people are bound to comment on it. I agree that Tom and Katie know that since they seem to shield Suri from being photographed with the bottle. Interestingly, if you know anything about Tom and Katie’s belief system, they say that children are actually adults in small bodies (they believe in multiple reincarnations) and should not be told what to do. That may be why Suri is still on the bottle. As an adult in a child’s body, she has the right to make her own decisions. It’s not a concept I’d go with, but to each their own.

    Mary,

I never saw that “statement” issued by Tom or Katie saying that Suri’s shoes were dance shoes. Didn’t see it anywhere. Not in newspapers or in a magazine or online! Could you give me the source and repost it here please?? I would appreciate that. I would think their fansites would have posted that or that sites like Just Jared would have picked it up. I think it would be interesting to forward on to certain places. Thanks!

  9. Lilianne says:

Mary, I don’t really know. I am not saying that to be difficult, I promise. :) I guess I just like to see little girls dressed like little girls. I think we having too many Miley Cyrus’ or Taylor Momsen’s out there. Do a google image search on them both. Taylor is just 16 and dresses and looks SO much older. I think little girls can wear dresses and be girlie but still look like little girls. The best example I can give of that is for you to look at a Lands End catalog at the little girls dresses in there. The heels don’t bother me so much on their own because they are pretty silly in the first place and shiny and its obvious she wouldn’t wear them often. It is just the combination of them and the fancy looking clothing that make me wish they would remember she is so young. That’s all, Mary. I just wish she looked like a pre-schooler a little more often. :)

  10. Kel says:

What other people think of you is none of your business.

Basically, she doesn’t care what others think….good for her.

And, even if it is odd (keeping my opinion on the low end), they are not hurting anyone. Move on and worry about the things that matter.

  11. Lilianne says:

Well, ok Kel. I am not “worrying” about Suri or her parents. I am commenting on a topic that was posted here that happens to be about Suri Cruise being photographed taking a bottle. That is what this site is for…to comment on the things we see here. So it is not out of line for me or anyone else to do that. Even IF it doesn’t match up with what you think or feel about the topic. I am not telling anyone here what to do or think. I don’t think that you should either. We can all say how we feel about something as long as it is respectful and kind and we can even all disagree with each other and even Julie herself. I don’t think they are hurting anyone either and even said that in a previous post.

  12. Kel says:

Lilianne….I only read the first comment about how that poster agrees with it. I didn’t read any other posts….not even yours. So, just so you are aware, nothing was pointed towards anyone on here. I assumed that most would think she was too old. I did say in my post that I was keeping my opinion on the low end for a reason (because it is odd to me) so basically I am stating that my opinion about what someone chooses to do is is just my opinion. Obviously she leads her own life and does what she wants.

  13. annie says:

I don’t think Suri wears nappies(diapers)and I too get the feeling that the bottle is used for nap time too. Even though we see her drinking from everything, I do think she will have to give it up soon though. I also wonder what sort of eater she is as well , sometimes mums keep the kids on bottles because they don’t eat all that well, and at least they have their milk. Suri is very adorable but looks a little thin paticularly in the park pics .

  14. Sharon says:

Kel, Mary and M,…I’m soooo with you.

Katie seems like a woman who lives her life as normally as possible given the US consumption of celebrity news. She has to know the paps are constantly watching, no matter where she is. I think she’s intelligent enough to know they have long range cameras.

As for blankets, bottles, etc….ugh, who cares? It’s her child, her prerogative. My son, who turned 13 a few months ago, plays school football/basketball, has tons of friends, 4.21 GPA and loves life. And guess what? He still has his crib blanket. Do I care? No. I expect he’ll put it in a box one day. But for now, he sleeps with it on his bed at night and folds it each morning. Has he regressed? No. Does he feel unsafe at home? No. Does he lack maturity? No, as a matter of fact, he’s in advanced classes across the board & is one of the most organized kids I’ve ever met. The “blankie” has ruined him…LOL.

At the end of the day, I really don’t think T or K care what anyone thinks of their parenting style. Regardless of the criticism they’ve received thus far, it seems they’ve stuck with their own brand of parenting. Hooray for them. Just because their style isn’t right for some doesn’t make it wrong.

  15. Sharon says:

    Ooops, I meant to say….”the “blankie” HASN”T ruined him…LOL”

  16. kelly says:

kel: she cares what people think, otherwise that bottle would be out and about a lot more.
I dont care that Suri still has a bottle, but for my own daughter, I would send them to Santa at xmas and be done with them.

  17. Lauren says:

Will Suri drink from the bottle and hold a blankie on the graduation day? I don’t think so. Let her be. Some bottles don’t have nipples but hippies. Why do people assume they love Suri more than her parents? She seems a very happy content child. People should worry about kids who are getting no love.

FYI, I have seen Violet Affleck and Kingston in Diapers. To each their own parenting. I hate it when people tell me how to raise my child.

  18. Mary says:

There are pics of Suri on set yesterday……….With a ponytail and hair barrette happily skipping along.
Also with a plush squirrel in hand.
    Cute!!!

  19. jenna says:

Lilliane: The first comment your wrote was very well written, beautifully insightful, and spot-on. My only opinion on this whole bottle issue can be summed up in one word: EMBARRASSING.

  20. Lilianne says:

I am out of this debate. But wanted to tell Julie that, as Mary said, there are new pics on JJ of Suri on the set of her Mom’s new movie that are SO cute. She does have her hair pulled back with a cute hair tie and a pretty barrette is holding her bangs. She is dressed in the sweetest looking little dress and leggings. She looks like a little girl! lol And I love it.

  21. Mary says:

Hi Lilianne…………I thought you would. :)

PS: I did a Google search as you suggested……. I understand.

  22. Lilianne says:

Hi Mary….doesn’t she look so cute!! And I thought you might after you looked at the images. They grow up so fast anyway…..I should know…my girls are 20 and 15. I would ground my youngest for life is she ever tried to leave the house looking like some of these starlets. lol Take care, and have a fabulous weekend. I have lots of leaf raking in my future. :)

  23. Mary says:

    Lilianne………..Suri looks beyond adorable!

I live in NYC and trust me I see it all the time unfortunately with the way some pre-teens, teens and even how some adults choose to dress.

Enjoy the weekend and leaf raking can be a relaxing diversion. :)
It’s very cold here today but the weekend is looking to be a bit warmer.

  24. kate says:

I do not think they would deliberately hurt Suri and thats why I believe they are not being told that by their pediatrician like I was not told that by mine.
There lots of different opinions on how to raise a child and their opinion is what matters to them. I think they should be able to raise her the way they see fit. It is their family.

  25. Linda says:

    one word. Bottle rot.

  26. Molly says:

Suri is 4 years old. I am not an expert (looks like there are plenty of those in this string). I dont know why she would be continuing to do it? It seems strange to me. But then again, I’m not her mother. There may be a reason that none of us know about.

  27. Carla says:

It is painfully obvious that Suri is probably autistic. She exhibits more telltale symptoms than not being able to get bottle trained, potty, trained or blanket trained. She does not communicate with anyone, she’s afraid of schildren who come near her, she constantly grips her hands and fingers like a claw, and she always looks like she’s involved in her own little world. No, this is not bashing, this is calling a spade, a spade. I believe that she is another Jett.

  28. nicki says:

i dont think anyone should be worrying about the bottle. I was drinking out of a bottle at her age and I just woke up one day and didnt want it anymore and I turned out okay. Im sure the bottle thing is some sort of comfort zone for her. She is constantly chased and photographed and that is probably scary for a 3 year old. What we need to be concerned about is katie and tom treating her as a little adult and allowing her to make her own decisions. A good parent does not allow their child to wear a sundress without a coat in Nov. It doesnt matter that she doesnt like coats, she will throw a tantrum and get over it. Katie you are the parent not suri now act like it

  29. jennfier says:

as a Special ed teacher, Carla, She is not an aut. I have taught so long now, I can look at pictures, see downs, aut. etc. and the is not aut.
