Is It Kate Holmes Officially Now?
When Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes started dating Tom called Katie Kate but nobody else did. Now it seems Tom might be pushing even harder for her name to be changed in people’s minds. On the list of presenters for the upcoming Costumer Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday Katie is down as Kate Holmes. I don’t think I’d ever be able to call her Kate though. She’s such a Katie to me.
What do you guys think? Should we call her Kate if that’s what she wants?

I hope he is not thinking along the lines of the great Kate Hepburn because this is NEVER gonna happen with Katie Holmes.
I think the name Kate sounds more mature than Katie. I think the idea is to make her image more serious and mature. She hasn’t been able to pull it off. Although she’s a complete contrast to the Katie of 2005.

Her real name is Kate, so who knows.
Also, she has already shown that she will do anything, including selling herself and her children, for money and fame, so changing her name is nothing.

Is Kate her official first name? I saw on several websites that her birth name is Katherine. I think Katherine seems more logical since she has long been known as “Katie” and I know that a lot of people named Katherine go by Katie. It makes less sense for Kate to be changed into Katie. Either way, I think she should be called by whatever name SHE prefers and that she shouldn’t allow anyone to officially change her name to anything less than what makes her happy.

I saw that it was Kate.
Either way, Lili, in an ideal situation, anyone should be allowed to call themselves what they want, along as it isn’t offensive or derogatory.
I have a feeling there is a lot of psychological mindgames going on here. I know Cruise refuses to call her Katie and has told people publically that it is a little girl’s name. That is not something a loving spouse will do, and he did it from the beginning of their relationship. Who knows what else is going on behind closed doors, but it is apparent that something is up.

i also understand her real first name to be katherine and that tom has been the only person, ever, who has addressed her as kate. i always thought that it was totally arrogant of him to address her by a name that no one else used. i don’t think she has any choice in this situation but since they are changing her so drastically, why not go for kate cruise? she could have the “privilege” of being the only wife (so far) who has taken his last name. in any event, i don’t see how changing her name is going to help her career at this point — it’s in tatters. i think this poor girl is so far gone (ie brainwashed) that she’s reached the point of no return. i find it very very sad that all of the loveliness and freshness of “katie holmes” has been completely destroyed. sigh.

Also, Paula Wagner, Cruise’s manager, helped with the event (I believe she is also an honoree), so I am sure she had something to do with the ‘misprint.’ She answers to Cruise, not KH.

I think I read somewhere that initially Tom wanted Katie to be known as Kate since she was now a mature woman with a child on the way and that Katie is more a name for a young girl and that he wanted for her to be taken more seriously by others. Don’t know if this is true or not.

i dont know what her official website(s) have said in the past but i bet that as of today (or whenever this issue became news), they’ve all been changed to indicate that kate is her real first name. i’m sure she’ll also “confirm” that in any future interviews.

At any rate, I think that if a person transforms themselves into a totally different person from how they speak, look, and even how they are addressed then they run the risk of completely losing the essence of what makes them who they are and that can never be a good thing. I don’t think there is anything wrong with trying to improve yourself by becoming more learned or to work on being more patient, more compassionate, etc., or to even change your look to be more sophisticated but you have to be careful to stay true to who you are.

Honestly Lili: How would you feel if your husband or boyfriend told you and the public that he wanted you to change your name because he wanted a more ‘womanly’ name for you and so people would take you seriously?
He would be implying that no one took you seriously before and that only your name the way he wanted would make you mature.
People only take others seriously by the way they behave, not by their name.
As Shakespeare said: “A rose by any other name is still a rose.”

I agree, Mama, and I would be offended. But then I am almost 10 years older than she is and I would never allow someone to turn me into someone I am not under the guise of trying to help me. Because I know myself and who I am. I do think that we are constantly evolving into the people we aspire to be and that if you think you are “done” then that is when you stop growing as a human being.

In my opinion, it takes more than a “name” to be taken seriously. There have been many famous celebrities who have used shortened forms of their real names that might not have ordinarily been taken seriously if they weren’t so good at their craft. Now if you have a really stupid moniker like Mark Wahlberg had back in the day, anyone remember Marky Mark? Then you might want to go by something different to be taken seriously. Today, he’s a pretty successful actor going by his given name. Many people don’t even remember “Marky Mark.” Let’s take Quenn Latifah. If she wasn’t as good at her craft as she is, no one would take her, just by looking at the professional name she goes by seriously. People take her seriously because she has proven to be a real player in Hollywood. Bit long-winded, but she can go by Katie, Kate, Katherine and still not be taken seriously if she has proven herself and “earned” her dues.

lemon, I do remember Marky Mark and who could blame him for dropping the first part of that name. And I agree that it takes more than a name to be taken seriously, but I suppose that some would see it as a possible first step. I know of a lot of people with given names like Daniel, Andrew, Jennifer, Steven, etc. who are known as Danny, Andy, Jenny and Stevie when they are young but want to go by a more formal version of their name as they start to get older. Most of the time they make that decision on their own, though. I think that if Katie wants to be Katie then that should be ok with the people who are supposed to love her.

Lilianne, I agree with what you said. A name is a name. I agree that someone should love you for who you are. Let’s face it, you can let someone change who you “really” are if you want to, but in the end it still won’t make the other person more inclined to stay with you. If you’re really true to yourself, you’ll find out that you’re a lot better off without a person like that in your life. I had a friend who wanted to date this guy in college so badly. The only catch was that he only “dated” women with long hair, so she went to the salon and got extensions. She was a beautiful young woman. He loved the look. Well, to make a long story short, when she told us that she was taking the weave out of her hair because she was tired of it, he gave her an ultimatum. Lose the weave and he was out of there. I always knew he was a jerk, but come on!! Well, she woke up and decided to start living her life for herself because she realized life was about more than letting someone yank your chain. She let him go. Today, close to 16 years later, she’s glad she did let him go. May sound trivial and stupid, but just goes to show that sometimes people can get caught up in things and have to “dig” deep to get out.

If I remember correctly, “tommy” always referred to NiCOLE as “Nic”.
He does have ADD, maybe the two syllable words are just too much.
Or maybe Nicole to Nick and now Katie to Kate to Kent.
just a thought.

Lemon 227: In some cultures, the length of your hair is like a woman’s veil, sacred, and so its actually good that these things are revealed BEFORE the relationship gets too deep and complicated. This way you can let that person go and have no regrets.

NG, what you said is so true. It can be painful to let someone go, but it can also save a lot of pain in the end, especially when you just have a gut feeling that something isn’t right.

There has got to be a MAJOR crisis strategic plan going on with these two because they have received such a huge backlash from the public with both movies bombing: Lions for Lambs and Mad Money and Cruise’s other movie still needs to be released in October and so they need to TURN THINGS around or else that movie will also bomb. And I don’t care how much money someone projects they have, if you keep spending money the way they do you will begin to lose your fortune.
Britney Spears was once thought to be worth 100 million and the other day I hear from either Forbes or another outlet that she’s worth 40 million. That might seem like a lot but she’s only 26 years old and spends money like water. When you are no longer producing hit records or movies you need to change your erratic lifestyle or you’ll be headed to the poor house (and I mean the lifestyle of an average American).
Cruise has invested a lot of money in that movie Valkiere or Rubicon (whatever the name is now). I believe he stayed at the Regent in Germany and was at a hotel room that was 4,000 or 5,000 per night and they were there for how long? 4 months and they took 1-2 floors of the hotel. All of that begins to add up.
ng
Feb 18, 2008 at 11:01 pm
…and just like candidates lobby for votes before primaries and general elections, Hollywood producers and actors (especially those with seasoned PR firms) strategically plan the release of their movies. And Cruise has an uphill battle with the release of this movie. I think if that movie was released this Friday very few people would go see it. They are gonna have to plan on how they are gonna use poor little Suri to
help them project a “happy girl” with her perfect family image. Its gonna be hard.
ng
Feb 18, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Suri better not grow up too fast because they will lose that window of opportunity to use her to improve their images and God help her if she loses her cuteness and goes through an awkward looking stage. They will toss her aside if she loses her photogenic likeness. Poor Suri…
PuckHappy
Feb 18, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I don’t think Suri can pull off the “happy family” on her own. I won’t be a bit surprised if we suddenly see the older ones in the loop real soon. Or at least more rumors of the famous five out and about.
The tommy PR machine did release that they were seen at a public bowling ally a week or so ago.
yeah right! Tomkat and 3 kids were seen by a many many on lookers and not a single cell phone pictures to be had. There was ONE strange picture of Katie leaning over trying to guide suri along. Can anyone say photo shopped pic?
ng
Feb 18, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Puck Happy: I agree that they will probably bring the older two kids to make it look like one big happy family. Or maybe a photo spread of their new home. However, I am certain all of this is discussed in details how it will look if the next big spread is just Cruise, Katie, and Suri in a park in Europe or the three of them with Isabella and Connor. The latter will quiet down the critics that have asked “where are Cruise’ other kids?”
But whatever they do, certainly everything is calculated to help with his image. Katie doesn’t have any movies in the pipeline so the only big event coming up Cruise’ movie in October UNLESS they attend someone’s wedding like they did last summer in France where the publicity machine kicked in with Suri on the beach in that cute pink swimsuit. But it would have to be someone as wealthy as James Packer.
Interesting enough they missed J Lo’s baby shower, Ashton Kutcher’s birthday party (although just about the same people that attended Madonna’s party were at Kutcher’s party), Fashion Week in Paris and New York. The photo opp with Posh was MISSED by Katie, who was REPLACED with Claudia Shiffer and Dita.
Is all this a coincidence or are these two out of the loop with J Lo and Marc Anthony, Posh and David Beckman, etc.???

i’m predicting here and now that the valykrie (sp?) movie will TOTALLY BOMB for several reasons. the title is weird and unpronounceable, tc looks absolutely ridiculous in an eyepatch and makes no attempt to sound remotely german, and the premise is just plain DUMB — who cares about someone who tried to assassinate hitler? there were others besides mr v. if mr v had succeeded, well, that might be a whole different story. and tommy wont be able to keep his mouth shut about cos when doing publicity. i don’t think it’s going to matter how many cute family-photo ops are done b/w now and the release date, but this movie has bomb all over it!

regardless of how many happy family photo ops are done between now and the release date of valkyrie (sp?), i predict here and now that the movie will be a TOTAL BOMB. tommy looks ridiculous with that eyepatch, there’s no attempt to even try to feign a german accent, the name of the movie is oddly unpronunceable (these things count in h-wood) and the plot sounds downright dumb — who cares about someone (one of many) who tried and failed to assassinate hitler? a noble cause, to be sure, but where’s the story? had mr v (?) succeeded in his mission, that would have been a completely different story. plus we all know that tommy will be unable not to promote COS while doing publicity for the movie and will further turn folks off. i predict the only people who go to see this movie are his fellow cultees!

It’s typical brainwashing technique to call someone by a different name, so as to disassociate the victim from their past, their friends and their family. Granted Kate isn’t a big change, but I think it’s clear he’s trying to convince her that anyone who still refers to her as Katie, (which is how the WORLD knows her) is from her pre-mrs tom cruise days
I read some really horrifying stuff this weekend but left the info to the links at home. It was a lawsuit against $cientology. This woman tried to leave the “church” and they caught up with her in NY and they kidnapped her. John Travolta provided one of his private jets to transport her back to Clearwater!!!!!!!

Hi everyone. Been visiting a long while but decided to post a little too. Lib you are so right I was reading on I think factnet the other day that that is definitely a tactic they use. Legend has it that TC was held their very heavily guarded and remote CA location when he was going thru those OT’s to be reprogrammed.
It is quite frightening actually because their ultimate goal is to put people in high places, go after the vulnerable like drug addicts and young people, etc. I believe you are absolutely correct because from what I have read this is what they do. Take away the whole identity-friends, family, etc surround the person with only scientologists and crank up the ‘auditing’ processes.

All of these comments are very interesting regarding changing a person and how Scientologists work at controlling people. However, there is ONE thing that STANDS OUT in my mind that will be very different about Katie and Suri, Katie was raised a Catholic and probably went to Catochislim classes, Sunday school, hopefully read the Bible, taught Christian teachings, etc. There are many things that stay in your mind, in your conscious and so there’s a chance this girl will SNAP OUT OF IT and realize the cost is too great.
As you know, your mind is like a computer that records all the websites you visit via cookies. Your mind is like the tide on the beach, sometimes it brings things to mind that were learned a long time ago but come back to mind because they were triggered by something a neuroassociation (an action brought a memory or reaction). I believe Katie still has the teachings of Christianity in her mind that’s why sometimes she LOOKS like something is off because she is struggling with this Scientology things. However, the baby kid goves have been taken off and you can tell she is going through some intense auditing, brainwashing, etc., just by the way she speaks interviews. “Suri is a strong woman, she’s magical, amazing, Scientology betters you.”
At this point, Suri most likely at the age of 2 or almost 2 is on a path that will NEVER learn about God or prayer, or the Bible teachings, etc. Her teaching will stem from Xenu, theatans, spaceships, etc. As ridculous as this sounds, that will be her background. From my perspective, Suir she was DOOMED from day 1 and as long as she is under Cruise’ charge she will only become more and more a true Scientologists and yes, possibly its leader. God have mercy on her soul.
When I am scared or feel a sadness or something I pray to God. I have a personal relationship with God, Jesus Christ, and I feel a difference. My faith gives me true peace, joy, etc., and I feel it is a priviliege to call yourself a child of God.
Cruise says its a privilege to call yourself a Scientologist. Between the two I have NO DOUBT that God is the real supreme being and Cruise and all his Scientology recruits are on a different paths.
You gotta be real sure about your faith because eternity is a long time and you just don’t want to follow a different faith based on someone’s celebrity. The Church of Scientology is bogus and dangerous. They have ruined the lives of many. God help Suri.
The more I read about Scientology and all its followers whether they are rich and beautiful looking dressed in the latest designer clothes, living in a beautiful mansion, flying on a private jet, etc, or their average, I can see all of this is designed to hide the real agenda, your soul. That is what both sides are after because it is the most valuable thing you have.

Lib– SCARY, I never realized that calling someone by a different name was a brainwashing technique but it makes absolute sense. The more I read about Scientology, the more fearful I am for Katie and Suri.
