Interesting Article About Valkyrie and New Trailer
This is supposedly a new trailer for Valkyrie, but I can’t actually watch the video. I am at the beach right now and my internet connection is horrendous, so you guys will have to tell me if it’s a new trailer or not.
(Side note: The article below is probably going to bring out some strong opinions and I want you to share them, but please do so with respect. If you disagree with someone’s opinion, that is perfectly fine, but I will delete any comments that are rude to each other or out of line against Tom Cruise and his family.)
Anyway, I just read an interesting article about Tom Cruise’s new movie Valkyrie. We all know there has been bad buzz about this movie from the very beginning. There was the whole issue with the German government about being able to shoot the movie where they wanted to. Supposedly they are not to thrilled about Tom Cruise and Scientology.
Then there were all the reshoots and the release date being moved again and again and again. The latest release date is February 13, 2009.
In the article I just read, the writer said that so far everything he has seen about this movie has been impressive. He says, “From the screenplay, to the first production photos which included a comparison shot of Tom Cruise against the real life Col. Claus von Stauffenberg, to the teaser trailer that was released a few months back.”
He also mentions that even those bitter angry Variety readers (that comment made me laugh) have written, “several people I trust have seen VALKYRIE and testify that it’s a superb thriller. ‘Bryan Singer is back in form,’ says one source.”
The comment that caught my attention the most was that the desire for this film to fail is MASSIVE. He could not be more right. I f someone else was behind this film, like maybe George Clooney, I truly believe there wouldn’t be this huge desire for the film to bomb. I think a lot of you would agree with me on that.
Here’s some advice from the article:
“The desire for this film to be a failure is massive. Everyone has purchased a pair of hater pants from the anti-Tom Cruise store (metaphorically speaking, I hope). I think everyone needs to watch the Valkyrie movie trailer below, and form an opinion based on what is shown. Forget what you’ve read about the production, and put your passive aggressive Cruise-bashing feelings away.”
Wow, those are some strong comments aren’t they? I am sure you will all have some interesting comments regarding this article. I have still not 100% decided if I will see this movie or not. Most likely I will because the whole Hitler subject is interesting to me, yet disgusting at the same time. I had the chance to visit the Auschwitz camp in Poland about 12 years ago and it was really an eye opener to see what the Jews went through.
So, who is going to see it? I am interested in hearing if you will or not and your reasons behind your decision. :D But, like I said, please be respectful to each other.

Thanks for this Julie!
It just goes to show you that some people are just hateful!
Take Roger Friedman for example, he reviewed this movie before they even started filming!
He is not even a movie critic, is he? As far as I know he is just gossip columnist!
BTW, Nicole Kidman’s rep in the US told Woman’s Day magazine, that “There is absolutely no truth to the quotes” from the HEAT mag regarding TC and the children.

Thanks Julie. A group of people have thrown their weight behind the so called anonymous to make sure this movie fails. For some reason they believe that if it succeeds scientology will spread to Germany. I am counting on movie goer’s independent thought like the way they defied critics on Indiana Jones. The reviews from those who have seen it are very positive. Negative from those who haven’t. Time will tell.
Julie, I don’t think the release date is Feb 13th anymore. It is now not specified. I am going to watch the trailer now. I am definitely watching it.

I would hate to see any movie fail. A lot of good people have invested time and money.
It does not matter whom the star is, this subject matter does not interest me. In watching this trailer it does look like it is a good quality film. IMO the lack of period voice accent really hurts a character and story line.

I won’t see this movie because I really don’t like war movies. The subject of the Holocaust is definitely one worth watching though if for nothing else but to bring attention to it. I think it is something that we can NEVER forget about even though it troubles me to think about it because of how horrific it was and still continues to be to this day.
On a side note, I saw the new Indiana Jones movie and did NOT like it. I was a big fan of the previous movies and was looking forward to this newest one with anticipation…but I was really, really disappointed. It did not meet my expectations even though I think Harrison Ford is spectacular and still pretty hot at his age!!

I’ll be watching this movie for 3 reasons. First because I’m a big thriller buff (this movie is not a war movie…its drama/thriller/history). 2nd I always get my money’s worth from TC’s movies. 3rd because of the director Bryan Singer, whose movies I love (I’ve seen most of his movies except Superman).

I will certainly go see the movie and I certainly hope that people will see it for what it is and not through bigotism or hatred. It’s a terrific story and I am certainly glad it was made into a movie because I, for one, had no idea that this bit of history had taken place! I love the trailer and I can’t wait to go see it! (And I know most of my friends feel the same way.)

I always go to see Tom Cruise films. They have for the most part been very entertaining and very well done. I confess, my support of him personally has falter some in the past couple of years, however he still remains an excellent actor. The trailer posted looks very good and intriguing.

I thought I read somewhere that there is another movie already filmed with this story and they may try to release it before this one gets out of the gate. That may be a bad thing for a production that seems to have already had more than its share of bad breaks. As a rule I don’t like war type movies, so unless it is really good like Flags of Our Fathers, etc. This subject-doesn’t really interest me and sorry to say, gone are the days-at least for me- when I would go to a movie just because TC was in.

In response to C. mom above, I’ve not heard another movie of this type, but perhaps I’ve just missed it? (I’ve always got my ears up for Holocaust movies, and often hear about them from the moment of their inception). I don’t tend to like war movies much either (and TC is no way a draw for me to this movie) but am always interested in Holocaust/WWII movies, and have known this story for quite some time. Will be interesting to see it on the screen. The movie definitely sounds more WWII related than Holocaust (by Holocaust, I’m defining it with regards to the mass killings and Shoah, not with regards to dealings with Hitler), as it takes place a great deal in Hitler’s bunker and among other members of the SS, not so much in the way of concentration camps. (This is how I’ve heard the story told from history, not from the script. I could be wrong, it’s completely possible the script changed some things.)
I just saw on E! that they were re-shooting a couple scenes for the movie. Coming from a film background, I understand the unending spector of reshoots, but was surprised that there have been so many different release dates given, especially since they are apparently still editing the film?
Please do not take this comment as criticism, only confusion over the backwards way of things. Perhaps this last round of reshoots is one of the reasons for for the continual pushing back of the film’s release?

Julie,
How lucky you are to have experienced this piece of history. It’s a dream of mine to one day visit Auschwitz, the place I’ve read about in so many books written by survivors. Though the Holocaust was conceived as a way to exterminate the Jewish race, and it is often remembered that 6 million Jews were murdered during this time, I feel it’s important to remember the 5 million people of other races/faiths that were killed right along with them. Auschwitz (being a death camp, as opposed to a labor camp), was responsible for the largest percentage of deaths among the Jewish population, but not all residents (for lack of a better term) were Jewish. Auschwitz was actually started as a prison camp, and it was not until later that it was incorporated as a death camp complete with incinerators.
Please pardon my rambling, I think I could go on all day! (I’ve studied the Holocaust for about 20 years now, focusing mostly on Auschwitz & Poland).
*Katie*
Jun 9, 2008 at 3:39 pm
P.S. for Julie - Auschwitz is in Poland, not Germany… (as you mentioned above that you visited it in Germany) It was given a German name because it was a German-run camp, but it has always been, and remains to be located in Oswiecim, Poland. Oswiecim is the Polish translation of the German word Auschwitz.

Well this movie has been shot and never released for several years….not sure where I heard this story–wasn’t the net. I thought it was on one of those endless hollywood channels.. One of the main scenes apparently where this hero is wounded and survives is yet to be shot and it is I think the opening scene that sets the entire movie.

I loved the Indiana Jones movie.
It’s to bad people believe gossip and not just go see a movie because they are interested in it or they saw the trailer and liked it.
I hope people see it and remeber what happen then so it won’t ever happen again.

I will definately see it .
I totally agree, it’s wrong to judge a movie BEFORE it is even released.
No one really knows before hand just what a movie will or won’t do, Movies that were deemed to be surefire hits have bombed and movies that were deemed to be sure bombs were major hits. A case in point..a decade ago there was another movie that also had majorly bad press and was billed before hand by many in the media and Hollywood as a disaster because of release delays on top of a skyrocketing budget ( of 300 million dollars ). However, it went on to become one of the most loved films of all time , criticly and publicly acclaimed as well as the biggest money making movie of all time ( over a BILLION dollars world wide ) .
That film was the mother of all mega blockbusters Titanic.
So before someone shoots their mouth off Before a film has even had a chance had better think again, they just could end up with egg on their face like those who predicted Titanic would be a flop.

c. mom, ah, definitely if it was made years ago, I most likely wouldn’t remember hearing of it (as I have been interested in films for years, but in the industry only about 5), that would be interesting to see as well - might be fun to compare/contrast the 2! :)
Julie, my apologies, I was not meaning to make you feel like an idiot, just a simple correction. :) I think it is awesome you’ve been there though, I do hope to make it someday and hopefully it will still be standing. (Obviously when it was built over 60 years ago, it wasnt really meant to last a lifetime, my fear is that it will fall into disrepair before I can go). I’m trying to learn Polish, but I’m told it’s one of the 5 hardest languages to learn. (this is in no way a deterant to me) I guess it doesn’t make it easier that I’m trying to pick up parts of French as well as learn Yiddish (and mind you I keep getting my Yiddish mixed up with my German, they’re so similar in ways!) My friends politely call me “ambitious” to say the least! LOL!
c. mom - for me, there’s never been a drive to see Tom movies, I guess I’ve always been like that - I think I’m one of the few girls who didn’t grow up with a crush on Tom Cruise, LOL! I’ll see this movie because of the subject matter - the trailor looks good (but I noticed it still says summer 08, oh well, one of these days we’ll be able to see it!). I come to this informative site for the Katie & Suri news. :) Katie & I worked together for a short amount of time a few years back, but she’s changed dramatically since then! (a big thank you to Julie for keeping us all updated and well-fed with photos!) :)
I know there was a lot of protest during the filming regarding Scientology, but I honestly can’t see the purpose of boycotting the film due to this. I’m in the anti-Scientology portion of the country, but isn’t that one of the lessons that the Holocaust teaches us, tolerance? What a better movie to which practice our tolerance.

Michelle - I chuckle when you say no one knows what a movie is like till they’ve seen it! It’s funny because this is so true, not only to the viewing public, but to the cast/crew as well! You can film a scene and think it will look one way, but until it receives that final edit, no one truly knows how it will come out. :)

*Katie* since you are a film student, I am sure you noticed and appreciate the good quality of film used in the trailer. I have a friend that has worked on all of toms movies. That friend has taught me the about the different qualities of film. He says that tom always uses the best and that is why his movies do so well. It starts out easy on the viewers eyes for one thing.
A fun tidbit, I thought!!

Info about Stauffenberg:
“Following the outbreak of war in 1939, Stauffenberg and his regiment took part in the attack on Poland. Afterwards he expressed support for the way the occupation of Poland had been handled by the Nazi regime and for the use of Poles as slave workers to achieve German prosperity and systematic German colonisation of Poland.”
He began to have a problem with Hitler when Hitler began invading German Catholic Churches in Germany, two years after Poland was occupied.
(Side note: A big part of the German takeover of Poland was executing Catholic Priests in the streets for no other reason other than they were Slavic! Since he led the Wehrmacht, he undoubtedly participated in these mass executions.)
Stauffenberg joined the military resistance because he saw Hitler as an inept leader and supposedly because the Germans were executing the Jews and others. He had an issue with how Hitler handled the invation of the USSR and France.
(Note: He had NO problem with slave labor. Unfortunetly, slaves tend to die because of the back breaking work and almost no food! They also require coersion. Stauffenberg and other Generals needed to the food to feed the army as it was making conquests.)
Stuaffenberg’s reason for proceeding quickly in 1944 had to do with D-day in France.
“Like most German military professionals, Stauffenberg had absolutely no doubts that this war was lost. Only an immediate armistice could avoid more unnecessary bloodshed and further damage to Germany, to its people and to most of the other European nations. However in 1943, he had written out demands with which he felt the Allies had to comply as a condition for Germany to agree to an immediate peace. These demands included Germany retaining its 1914 Eastern borders, including the Polish territories of Wielkopolska and Poznań. Other demands included Germany maintaining such territorial gains as Austria and the Sudetenland within the Reich, giving autonomy to Alsace-Lorraine, and even expansion of the current wartime borders of Germany in the southern direction by annexing Tyrol as far as Bolzano and Merano. Non-territorial demands included such points as refusal of any occupation of Germany by the Allies, as well as refusal to hand over war criminals by demanding the right of “nations to deal with its own criminals”. These proposals were only directed to the Western Allies—Stauffenberg wanted Germany only to retreat from Western, Southern and Northern positions, while demanding the right to continue military occupation of German territorial gains in the East.”
Bottom Line: Stauffenberg bought Hitler’s Third Reich and wanted to keep Germany’s new found wealth of land…and slaves. Even if he did succeed, he would have failed here because the Allies (US, UK, and USSR) were not going for a 1919 fluff treaty. They sought only unconditional surrender. And the Holocaust would have continued.
Notice, there was no mention of freeing Germany’s slave workforce!

I’ve been to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. It is quite a heavy experience. The first thing they do after you pay the admission is give you a card with someone who was a victim and then you walk through the museum and see how their rights were slowly stripped until they were hauled off to a concentration camp. You find out at the end if your person survived or not.
I have also studied the Holocaust in depth and I have no desire to see this film. It has nothing to do with honoring the victims, but with honoring one of the perpetrators because he had a difference of opinion with Hitler and planted a bomb.
By the time Stauffenberg decided to get power for himself and keep Germany’s new territory, whole villages in German occupied territory had been wiped out. All the inhabitants had been executed by soldiers and Generals like Stauffenberg.
Sorry, but I sincerely question the man’s motives, when he is more concerned with preserving the REICH than ending the slaughtering of innocents. He also saw from the beginning what was happening in Germany; and he approved of the slave labor.

About the film itself, if it is soooo great, why does it keep being pushed further and further back? I could be wrong, but it does not take 18 months to shoot several scenes unless there are other issues that we are not being told about.

Hey Puckhappy! I’m not a film student, but a film maker (I never went to school for it, just jumped into the puddle with both feet, lol!) often working right on set (the best place to learn) or in the art dept. I’ll do whatever job they hire me for! (just so long as it doesnt invlove me getting naked, lol!) Film stock is always important (as is what camera is used), and of course always has an effect on the film. On films I’ve worked on, the decision for what stock to use is mostly made by the director (as well as possibly a producer) and mainly the cinematographer. I’ve not had an actor actually have any say in this matter before, but I know Tom likes to be a part of everything on the films, and is often a production partner, so I can understand why he would be able to lend his input, and also why he would want the best.
My thoughts on Stauffenberg are this, as they are with many SS, SA, etc members that decide later in the game that what’s going on isn’t right. Yes, they have done as much wrong as the next guy, but at least they are realizing (as Oskar Schindlar did) that was happening was wrong and trying to be pro-active about it. Obviously, Stauffenberg & Schindler are 2 different guys who had 2 completely different approaches, but they both started out as SS men, both loyal to the Reich, both wanting and enjoying the power that being a Nazi afforded them. It’s actually this power which allows them to be able to take the steps in the end that they took.
The ironic thing about slave labor during WWII is that nearly every company used it, and it so often came from concentration camps. If you are writing these messages on an IBM or IBM compatible computer, you are taking part in the fruits of that slave labor. It’s so interesting to go back and look through the records, and see what companies that we take for granted now used slave labor then.
Anon - I too have been to the Holocaust Museum in DC a couple years ago - I loved the “passports” they give you at the beginning, but felt much of the exhibit had a “cold” nature to it. It was mostly photos & videos. I would have loved to see some actual relics as I have seen in other museums. There sounds like there was an excellent research library there which I regretably was not able to make, but I was sad that it was not a better useum. (The Holocaust Museum in MI is so much better, it was the 2nd ever built, with the 1st being in Isreal. It was around way before DC). I’m not sure if the rules have changed since I was there, but our admission was free, which I thought was great. We just had to reserve a ticket with a time on it. I had a bad knee when we were there, and had to use the wheelchairs (also provided free) at each museum, so even though we were willing to wait our turn, the nice folks there let us join an earlier group since they knew it would take us longer.
As I said, I don’t agree with a lot of Tom’s views, but I can 100 %relate to the energy felt on a set. I’ve never felt more alive than when on a film, no matter if it’s a 25 hr work day, or were in cold freezing rain, whatever it is, I’m always sad to go home for the day. I literally am like a zombie for a couple days after a film ends because I don’t know what do do with myself and I miss everyone that I’d seen so often over the length of filming. I’m away from filming right now and miss it terribly, but can’t wait to get back to it!!!

you’d be surprised at how long a movie takes to film, especially a war movie. Most movies film at a rate of about 3-5 pages a day (versus a TV show which can film 6-8 pages a day), with the majority of days being only 3 pgs. 1 page usually equals 1 minute, and war movies take even more time to film, since the set-ups take FOREVER for each take. (Sometimes they can use as many as 20 takes per angle). After, it goes to post-production where it is processed and along with everything else, any digital effects take place. These are extremely time consuming. It’s also here where they sometimes realize that they’ve missed a critical shot, or that the shot they do have doesn’t work which I believe is one of the problems Valkyrie had. While 18 mos seems like a long time, it’s such a short time in the film business. I once did a Civil War film that took 2 years to film!!

Tom and katie have changed their lives to be more positive. Most of katie’s training centers around ridding the negative. They do not acknowledge any negative behavior. That would mean they do not read and then reply to a negative word about them.
In the Tomkat world, there is no such thing as a “non fan”. As with ALL Hollywood stars, there is no such thing as bad press. It is when they STOP talking about you that you need to worry.
So please, stop referring to ANYONE as a “non fan”. It really makes for a negative and hateful post. If someone posts here it is because they are following tomkat. It is no ones business as to why. They do not care WHY, they are just HAPPY that someone is following their affairs.

good points PH. It seems to me that the most hatefulness here comes from the ‘fans’ Now that they can’t use the word hater, they just substitute the ‘non-fan’ word and continue on with their attack. Still totally negative. And I think they believe that TC or crew sees this little old ‘gossip’ site. I doubt he is even online at all.

Personally, I cannot wait for this film. The director is spectaculor, the cast is amazing and I love Tom Cruise. All the negativism has not daunted me in my desire to see him in this film. What did he do for Gosh sakes — jump on some furniture because he was thrilled to have found the love of his life? He was giddy and gleeful, but hardly worthy of all this slander! And, he is a riveting actor. I can’t wait to go see this film. Half of the nay sayers cannot even spell or sling together a coherent sentence — why listen to them? Dee Dee

Correct me if am wrong but I thought the word non fan was created to replace hater. I may be wrong. I find it more appropriate to describe some one who calls themselves ‘not a fan of Tom Cruise at all. It is also easier for general comments to people opposed to anything Tom Cruise. I don’t “hate” tom cruise or his family. I am disappointed with some of his actions as of late, but that does NOT mean that I hate him.
I take GREAT offense when you, lauren and others tell me how I feel and what I think of him. And I KNOW without a shadow of a doubt that Tom would also take offense to hear that someone is being ridiculed and bullied the way that you do to me, because of him.

I don’t see any reason for the posts that seem angry or to personally attack someone for their differing opinions. At this point, it seems unlikely that either camp is going to miracuously change to the other. And just because for instance I have no love-loss for TC doesn’t make me an evil or unintelligent. I have as many valid reasons to me, to not be a fan, as the fans have apparently to love and adore TC and clan.

Tia, thank you for the nice words. :) I do try to keep my comments fair and informational. (Though sometimes I’ll admit it’s hard, since I’m more biased towards Katie than Tom - but not knowing Tom, I try to give him the benefit of the doubt.)
Annie, Yes, I worked with Katie on Dawson’s Creek. Obviously, there is a vast difference in her life now versus her life then, but I wouldn’t say that she has experienced human nature at it’s lowest by any means. The film industry is a massive beast that can swallow you whole and spit you out. I think it gives me a bit of a different perspective, being able to see what really goes on sometimes, vs what is printed in magazines. (Not necessarily about Katie, but others I’ve worked with) While she (in my opinion) is not the same girl I worked with, and I cringe at some of her life decisions, every once and a while, I still see that *spark* in her that glowed so brightly years ago. I think she has handled her self pretty well given the amount of press that has been thrust upon her. I’m always happy to watch her films, and of course old footage of Dawson’s and always look forward to new stuff as well. Although I no longer see Katie, I do occasionally exchange letters with her mom.
c. mom - thank you for the title of the movie, it does sound vaguely familiar, so perhaps I’ve seen it and it has fallen to the wayside of my brain, lol! I have tendancy to try to stuf too much in my brain at times!!

I agree with puckhappy that “non-fan” and “hater” are 2 completely different terms. I’ll fully admit to not being a TC fan, but I don’t hate him, I don’t even know him. As I’ve said before, some of us come to this site for Katie, some for Tom, but it’s not necessary to be a fan of both to be here, nor should someone be made to feel like less of a person because they are only a fan of one and not the other.
Someone asked where the kids were going since Katie is in NYC and Tom filming Valkyrie. I often wonder this myself - but then again, this is one of the things that separates the celebrities from us. We (or at least I) don’t have the resources of a personal jet at the ready, but as we’ve seen time & time again, many celebs including the Cruises can transverse many nations in a short amount of time, so they are probably not far from each other at any given time.

*Katie*,
Does KH stay in touch with others from the show? There has been quite a bit of controversy around here, as you may have gathered, so just wondering whether some here who claim to have the inside scoop actually do.

Tyler, sorry I don’t have any insight on this question. I know that by the end of Dawson’s, Katie was pretty sick of James Van Der Beek (mind you, it wasn’t just Katie who was sick of him, most of us were). I know (only fro reading it) that Katie did show up at a memorial for Heath Ledger to support Michelle (Williams), but I think out of the cast, the 2 that have remained the closest are Michelle Williams and Busy Phillips. They were extremely close during filming, and although their lives have taken different paths, they’ve still stayed close.

Annie, I agree with you that many articles written about the family do hit below the belt, I just believe that there still is a level of decorum, and that it can probably always get worse.
I also agree though with someone above that said any press is good press. I would say this is true 95 % of the time, but at least if people are talking about you, it means they haven’t forgotten about you or your movies. I think some press can hurt the movies, but most stars escape unscathed. Although I was less than happy that Katie hooked up with Tom, I know that it most certainly made her a bigger celebrity. She’s an awesome actress, but in this world, being a great actress isn’t the only requirement to the job. I just hope that she does continue to make movies, and look forward to seeing her on Broadway. :)

Katie, why were you not happy that Katie hooked up with Tom? I’m curious, I see their relationship as only having benefited her big time,
plus she seems to be very happy with him.

Jun 10, 2008 at 8:29 pm
*Katie* - You didn’t make me feel like an idiot, I’m good at doing that all by myself, lol. I appreciate you correcting me nicely though. :D
I have heard Polish is hard to learn also. When I visited Auschwitz I was living in Kosice, Slovakia at the time teaching English in the elementary schools. I did try to learn Slovak, but it was hard and I got very frustrated. Plus, every time I tried to practice with my Slovak friends, they would tell me to speak English so they could practice. My husband and I were there together when we were dating, so we’ll sometimes use Slovak words with each other and our kids hate it. :)
Good luck on your language training. I was amazed at how many different languages children in Europe knew.
*Katie*
Jun 10, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Thanks Julie :) It’s always amazed me how many languages Europeans know as well! When I was in school, our German teacher was actually from Germany, and said that when she lived there children learned 6 languages starting right in kindergarten! (PS - enjoy your vaca!) I’m not doing so well with the Polish, mostly due to the different pronounciations, but I noticed our library has a “learn polish” CD that I’m going to check out :) I’d love to travel all over Europe someday. So far I’ve been all over Switzerland with a quick hop to Paris, but I’ve still got a lot of places to cover! (Darn, Constanople’s gone! I guess I’ll just have to settle for Istanbul… LOL!!)
Alice - I personally wasn’t happy that Katie hooked up with Tom because I could see the change it made in her. She acts so different around him than she has any other guy I’ve seen her with (I knew her when she was dating Joshua Jackson & Chris Klein, but I do not know Tom). I know it did wonders for her celebrity, and if she is happy, them I am happy for her, but it’s my own personal opinion that I just don’t like it. She’s become so separated from everything, so different than the Katie I knew. I’ll also admit to not liking Scientology, but as I try to keep my posts on here friendly and considerate of others, I’d rather not write a public diatribe of my reasons for these feelings. I hope that you understand :)
Alice - in no was does Tom playing a Nazi mean that he agrees with Nazi beliefs - that’s why it’s called ACTING. Liam Neeson also played a Nazi, this also doesn’t make him a Nazi either. Heck, Tom Hanks played a cross dresser once and no one has ever accused him of liking to wear women’s dresses. Many times actors take roles because they are meaty and a good way to exercize their acting chops. I’ve worked on films before where an actor has signed on simply because he knew and liked the producer. That’s the game of it all, and that’s part of the fun of acting. Being able to become someone and do things you wouldn’t normally do. Katie being Catholic also has no bearing on Tom’s role in the film. Katie’s married to Tom, not Stauffenberg (Tom’s role in the film).

*Katie*: I have to ask only because you mention that Katie acts differently around Tom than any other guy you’ve seen her with……………Have you seen Katie and Tom together?
PuckHappy
Jun 10, 2008 at 10:09 pm
*Katie* I enjoy your all around view on things. I guess since you knew KH back when, you have seen her “grow up”. How fun to be able to say, “I knew her when …..”
I understand that some actors take on a part for the challenge and maybe that is what tom was thinking. MAYBE! But there are many actors that will not take on a subject matter that goes against their personal beliefs no matter what the challenge or pay or???
In this movie, I do wish tom would have used the accent that the others are using. When I watch the trailer and I hear his normal voice I think “A Few Good Men”, which was a GREAT movie by the way.
And in reading many different reviews, that seems to be the major negative with this movie so far. I am sure there are more but I have not read them.
Looking forward to more tidbits from “Inside the Actors Studio w/ *Katie*”

Jun 10, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Mary - As I have said many times, I do not know Tom, ergo, I haven’t known Katie with Tom. I no longer see Katie as she and I don’t work together anymore. I send cards once and a great while to her c/o her mom, and do hear from her mom occasionally, but no, I have no contact with her anymore. Before you ask the inevitable question “how do you know she acts differently?” here is my answer - watch her in interviews. I have the advantage of seeing her in person with a couple other boyfriends (as well as seeing her her just hanging out at aprties, on set, etc - in “non-interview, no-press” situations) and comparing that to what she was like in interviews at the time, but even not knowing Tom or having seen Katie & Tom together, she is still extremely different in her interviews now than she was then. This started directly after getting together with Tom. She is also different around Tom in any photos I’ve seen than around other boyfriends. I’ve seen a stronger Katie emerge in the last year, but still so different.
I know what I say has the possibility of being heavily debated, and frankly that’s not what this thread is for, but I did want to answer your question honestly and concisely. There was a personality shift after she started dating Tom which has continued after she married him. I do pick up on certain things in photos, behaviors that I’m aware of from knowing her, but such incidences would be hard to explain and I would rather keep them to myself.
*Katie*
Jun 10, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Puckhappy - lol! Thank you for the kind words. :)
Yeah, it’s definitely cool to have known Katie quite a while back, and even so, I’m still enthralled with the life she lives now and follow it just like anyone else. :)
You bring up an interesting point about the accent, it hadn’t occured to me seeing the preview, but it would have been a very interesting thing to see. Now that I think of it, it does surprise me that he doesn’t use an accent. I’ve read several articles about Tom’s devotion to the roles he plays (i.e. for Top Gun he learned to fly) and it does seem like a very Tom-thing to want to make the character as authentic as possible by using an accent. Perhaps we’ll find out if the reason for this when (if? lol) this film is FINALLY released. I’ll look forward to it :)
You speak the truth about some actors refusing roles, no matter how meaty, due to beliefs, and in fact a friend of mine does that exact thing. She has a younger sister that she knows she’s a role model to, and if she feels that a role, or photo shoot, doesn’t portray her in a way she would wants to be seen, she will turn down the offer. I guess it is just up to the individual actor to choose their path.
Annie - I’m not sure how this has to do with age, but yes, having experienced real truth vs. hollywood tabloids (not of my own life, only of actors I’ve known), the tabloids can be brutal. Not saying that they’ve played fair all along, but I honestly do think that they could say much worse things things than they do. It wouldn’t make any of the things they say true, but that doesn’t always stop a tabloid…

Thank you for the response*Katie* but I don’t think you answered my question. Nice try though. :)
I have seen many of Katie’s interviews but I’ll address the ones since Tom…………I recall how very giddy she and Tom both were in the beginning and how they were both ripped apart for it.
She and Tom as well are definitely more cautious now but can anyone blame them?
Just one more question…………..When did you stop working with Katie?
*Katie*
Jun 10, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Mary, as I’ve stated, I worked with Katie on Dawson’s Creek. Dawson’s no longer films, ergo, I no longer work with Katie. I’m not sure how much more clear I can make that. Perhaps I’m taking for granted the fact that people know Dawson’s was filmed in North Carolina, not Hollywood, so when a show ends, you cease to see the actors you worked with so closely. This is a sad reality of the film business in NC, as one of my best friends was an actor in NC and has since moved on. We talk on the phone all the time and exchange letters, but I never actually get to see him anymore because he is often away working on movies elsewhere.

As you all know, I am a professional voice-over artist and in earlier threads I wrote that I too noticed a significant difference in KH in how she interviewed post TC. I mentioned that even her voice has changed and that she has adopted voice tones and inflections eeriely similiar to her husband’s. Just wanted to reiterate this b/c Katie has mentioned that she too has noticed a change in KH’s behavior. I agree with Katie in that KH is not the same woman she was pre-Cruise. The difference in behavior, actually, is quite alarming.

Jenna - I’m right there with you about the change in the interviews. Her mannerisms, her voice, all changed since TC. It’s interesting to hear it from the point of view of someone who works professionally with voice. (You explained so much clearer the jist of what I was trying to say earlier, thank you).
I would love to speak with you, off board, about your career. I find voice over work fascinating and would like to delve into this career & and am looking for some advice. I’d rather not post my email publicly, but I do enter it when I post, so maybe Julie can pass it along to you please? My best friend does a lot of work, but since he was an actor first, he ets called to do the job instead of actually having to seek out work. He didn’t have a lot of advice, but did think that my voice would be good for animation since it sounds a great deal like a child’s voice (though I’m an adult) and is definitely a unique one. Any advice would be helpful please, I look forward to hearing from you. :)

Katie: The museum did have authentic things there, inclduing the cattle cars used to haul the JEws to camps, and exhibit that contained shoes actually worn, uniforms, etc. The pics are authentic too because they are the actual photos of the vicitms as well archival footage that the Nazis took.
Obviously, it will not be as authentic as Auschwitz.
Stauffenberg never did what he did because of the slave labor. He did it because he wanted to preserve the new Reich and its slave labor. He was only interested in Germany’s greatest, an attitude which led to ethnic cleansing of the Jews.

*Katie* did you really expect Katie’s behaviour not to change after 6 years and what she has been through these last three years? Every time she sits for an interview, she is on defence and on guard. Queen Latifa and Keaton’s behaviour became very defensive in interviews when they were with Katie, now just imagine what she (Katie) has to go through. She has to guard whatever she says because it can be spun and quoted out of context. A lot is made of whatever she says. Her hair styles are headline news!!!!
So many things she has to consider before she opens her mouth. Who is her friend, who is her enemy? Should she call Connor and Bella her kids? Does the interviewer think her marriage is a sham? That Suri is a rosemary baby or Kleins kid? So many things must go through that girl’s mind, bless her soul. If she is happy she is brainwashed, if she is cool, she is a zombie and a stepford wife or unhappy with a controlling husband. She seems happy and that is what matters. Can anyone seriously think she would have remained the same person to the public after all these attacks? Her interview on Letterman was ridiculed in 2005, and it was very natural.
In Jan, I heard her call-in interview on Ryan Seacrest’s show and she sounded so normal and care free, which led me to believe that she may find personal interviews daunting these days. Which is a pity because she has a charming personality. In time she will get a comfort zone and she is starting to get that now. You have to give her credit for the way she has come through these last three years.

Calm down Tyler,
I thought you people ‘who are not fans’ (I am trying not to use non fans or haters) are the ones who said people should stop questioning poster’s motives?
Mary has valid points. I too find it intriguing that someone who sends letters to Katie through her mom would come here and say such things about her. I am not saying every one should gush but if fans and *** fans are loyal to a point of failing to criticise someone calling a child names. How then can a friend comment about another who is going through a tough period in her life on a blog?I may be wrong but wouldn’t someone who is a friend to Katie try to understand her more instead of subtley criticising her, which in my opinion is what *Katie* is doing. Especially since you admit you have not met her with Tom and has not been in touch.
Please, please *Katie*, do not think I say this in bad faith, you make valid points in some areas, but I am a bit puzzled. Notice that I have not taken any issue with your attitude towards her husband, every one is entitled to their opinion. Yours puzzles me.
You do not have to respond. Just wanted to get that off my chest and take the frown off my face :)

No one has said she is not objective. If you give your opinion, you have to be ready to be asked questions. It is what blogging is about. I do agree with her Katie has changed. What I find puzzling is that as her friend or someone who personally knew her and even exchanges letters with her mom, she should choose to blog about her in such a manner on a public blog. I am wondering whether she has tried to put herself in Katie’s shoes. What would she do? How would she feel about people she knew, people who send her cards blogging about her. May be that is one of the reasons she has changed. People she once called friends look at her and judge her without trying to understand her. I read how Michelle reacted to Busy phillips call on finding out Tom was dating Katie. I think those are to girls who are not really nice.

By the way *Katie*, Katie is still a friend of James Van Der Beek. She attended his wedding and he attended hers in LA. There is a video on TMZ of him saying they keep in touch and they are still friends. Besides she was not in touch of many DC cast members by 2005.

Well Tyler, if you hopped off the tomkat sites once in a while you would realise that there other celebrities, Google does help as well:)
Of course Katie Holmes is not an Angel who decended onto the earth. She is human, I wish every one would realise that. I have not read anything unflattering about her from any one. I have read lots of unflattering things about most stars but not her. Some people may find her ‘girl next door’ character a bit tedious. I am not one of them.
@*Katie*
Back then, was Katie friends with Michelle? There seems to be no love lost between them. I don’t think Michelle is nice though. Michelle has been through a lot. I have much more respect for her after Heath’s passing. That girl is strong.

Lauren, your post around 12:20 was one of the best I have seen. Amusing as heck. Well done. The things I would totally find obnoxious to say about any child would be something like ugly, etc. Personal attacks are just not ok with a child. And I think Suri is a doll by the way. Altho I would NEVER call a child any derogatory name, the fact is that Katie did become pregnant and have her outside of marriage. But not that it makes it right, it is the current Hollywood trend..so not any different than everybody else seems to be doing. I am concerned lately that there haven’t been any pictures of her smiling and happy and interacting with anyone even Bella and Connor. My fave pics are of her and her mom laughing and interacting at that game a few months ago. I just want to see more of that little girl and not the one with the sort of sad eyes as of late.

*katie* — just wanted to say i for one really appreciated your posts, and respect how you refrained from vociferously attacking cos even though you admit to not liking it….i think you are entitled to your opinions on kh, as we all are.
i have also noticed many changes in katie, since tc. the changes may come from having to practice more caution, as lauren suggests. but they might also reflect some sort of identity confusion, which is what i suspect is going on. i am entitled to my view.
on valkyrie, looks alright. i agree i would have liked to see tc at least attempt an accent. the movie looks like an entertaining thriller, but i really wouldn’t want to try to read more into it, like history or the holocaust. i have visited dachau and auschwitz, and there is a feeling that one can experience by standing over a plaque where thousands were killed that no hollywood movie can reproduce. i’m still undecided whether i’ll watch this in the theatres though. probably on dvd.

Tyler, I wanted to reply your post but I started yawning and lost any energy left in me to even bother. Do you ever read the thread as a whole or do you take each post independently. It is a discussion, follow it. Do you ever read between the lines? Do words like innuendo and insinuation mean anything to you? I am bored.

Wow… I leave leave tow for the day and come back to several posts mitigating my statements and even asking why I dare post “family secrets” and how that is not very friendly of me. I will not give credence to this wretchedness, but will state that I’ve spoken the truth (and yes, I know the JJ/KH time line, and yes, I knew them then, even though I didn’t yet work on the set.)
Someone asked about Katie’s family and the occasional letter I get from her mom. These are personal letters, and not something I wish to post on a public forum.
Lauren, your post states that you don’t think Michelle is a nice girl (perhaps that was a typo? because in the next sentance you went on to call her strong). Michelle, though shy, is extremely nice. I didn’t get to now her as well as I would have liked to, she kept to herself quite a bit, but was always kind. Josh was quite humorous, however, after the first season of Dawson’s James’ head grew about 5 sizes larger (nice kid when it started). I have not seen any of them since the end of the show.
Someone else wrote about how Katie keps in touch with James, saying that I had false information by stating that by the 6th season, we were all pretty sick of him. How is this false information? Were you on set, did you see the dailies? Did you watch Katie roll her eyes whenever she had to kiss James in the later seasons? I think not unless you were actually there. I can’t speak for Katie, I don’t speak for Katie. All I can speak of is my own experiences. If anyone has a problem with that, well then it’s their problem to have, not mine.
I enjoy coming to this site for news, and have been a lurker for quite a long time, but whoa… many of the posters on here have a tendancy to nit-pick a statement to death, which is not something I wish to spend my time on.
I thank you to the people who said kind words about me, but can’t figure out why we, as a group, can’t just have a conversation about the subjects posted without it turning into a free-for-all….

I asked questions based on a discrepancy I found in a comment and for that I get insulted.
My questions were directed to *Katie* who had answered my questions before and I looked forward to her answering the ones I did ask about the discrepancies……………..In the above comment she has. Thank you *Katie*
I respond to subjects/comments posted and I have an opinion as do all who post here have.
I don’t appreciate being insulted because I dare to ask questions.
Let me say it again………………My opinion on TC/KH are not predetermined because I am a fan.

Katie: I have enjoyed having a MATURE conversation with you! Unfortunately, some here are still living in Junior High School.
Maybe there is another place we can all go for a more mature conversaiton!

JaJorge, i too think that katie has identity confusion, wanting to please everybody, just knowing, that people are disecting you all the time judging the authenticity of your relationship , your childs paternity, trying to figure out, what’s real, and what’s not, that you sold out, for celebrity status. people ,wishing bad on you ,your husband and baby. …….to be told , that you were set up, and auditioned, as a could be girlfriend, that was posted all over the world , internet, tv,mags, radio….no matter how much she loves tom, nobody, but nobody will convince me, that she did’nt question that in her heart and mind……it bothers me ,when people, like jada.p. smith say , katie is strong, gracious, maybe, that is her problem , everything is inside. maybe that’s why i found *katies comment yesterday….”that things could be worse” a bit strange. probably ,their marriage won’t last, after all this is hollywood,as everyone says, but i would hate for it , to ever end, because it was poisoned by everybody.

Her husband says that no one should underestimate Katie and it’s my opinion that many people have. They didn’t think the girl from DC would be able to handle all the viciousness said about her, her family and her choices over the past three years but she has and she’s done it with an incredible amount of dignity.

*Katie*: :) Yes, of course we can talk about VO work and how to break into it. I LOVE it. I have performed on stage and in independent films for many years but only have broken into VO work professionally and consistently within the past few years. My business is just now beginning to be lucrative! VO work fits perfectly in within my lifestyle b/c it permits me the time to attend graduate school. (I am graduating with my Master’s degree in December.) I would be more than happy to chat with you . How should we exchange e-mail addresses? Contact Julie? ANNIE: Hi! :) To answer your question I would speculate that yes, many stage performers have had a few voice lessons under their belts. Most theatre people can sing as well as act, and alot take professional voice lessons to improve upon their ability to sing. It is not mandatory to take lessons when on the stage but it may help ones performance. I can sing and act and took a few voice singing lessons many years ago. As a professional speaker I do not currently take any voice lessons. Again, it is not mandatory. Many stage performers already are able to project, have excellent diction, no identifiable accents etc. so taking a lesson will only help them to be even more articulate. Hope this answers your question! take care ladies! Jenna :)

I hope Julie will see this for herself…read what everyone has said and make up her own mind who is bullying who and who has insulted who.

“many of the posters on here have a tendancy to nit-pick a statement to death, which is not something I wish to spend my time on.”
………………………………………….
You have to understand this is a blog and that is what people do on blogs.
If you’ve been a long time lurker you would know this…some posters claim they have different experience, different jobs and live in different places….do you get where I’m going with this? People here contradict themselves all the time and if another poster catch that they’ll bring that up for discussion and ask questions and you have to be prepared to answer that or you don’t have to at all but the questions will be asked. Contrary to what some might try to make you believe this is what happens on a fan blog. Unless of course the site is a hate site and everyone speaks the same language (even on fan forum this is how fans are).
“Their marriage won’t last, after all this is hollywood,as everyone says, but i would hate for it , to ever end, because it was poisoned by everybody.”
……………………..
I’d hate for it to end too. I’m rooting for them to prove all the naysayers wrong and live happily ever after. And I wouldn’t say that their marriage is poisoned by everybody but people have tried to poison it from the start and if what people said happened, they wouldn’t be married today.

I have NEVER insulted anyone on this site. There was no need whatsoever to insult me in responding to my comments.
There is no discussion without questions.
My questions to *Katie* were due to the comment she made saying that Katie and JJ’s relationship happened in the hiatus of season 1 and 2 and part of season 2…………….
*Katie* said she was not on DC for either season so for her to say that she observed KH/JJ as boyfriend/girlfriend couldn’t be………. Their romance started on set.
Katie herself is quoted as saying that the relationship lasted all of season 1 and part of season 2, not during the hiatus between seasons 1 and 2.
*Katie’s* statement begged a clarification.
Who better to know when her relationship started/lasted than Katie Holmes herself.
My questions did not deserve this:

I agree with you Mary, you did not deserve that from Tyler and Bumblebeej, for only asking questions. I’ve never read you insulting anyone.
I think people want to just say whatever they want and not get asked questions and that is not going to happen on this blog. If you not prepared to back up what you say or have a problem with getting asked questions or your post being nit-picked then don’t say anything at all.
Even after advertising their website here, I can see Puckhappy and Bumblebeej are still with us….

con mom, the last thing that suri has, are sad eyes, glad her dad is holding her more in front of the photographers,as he seems more comfortable in front of the cameras than katie is, so suri might become less wary of them.

Wow…there are a lot of people here who seem to thrive on being vicious and mean to people they don’t even KNOW. I don’t care if you don’t agree with someone and feel very strongly about something there is NEVER a good reason to call someone else names or to be cruel.

Annie, nothing bothered me about your post. I was actually agreeing with you…people have tried to poison their marriage/relationship but they’re still going storing and I don’t want it to end just like you.
I apologies for the confusion.
