Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

I Finally Saw Mad Money!

by Julie on June 25th, 2008

mad-money-dvd.jpg

So, I am a cheapskate when it comes to going to the movie theater. I add up the cost of the tickets, the coke, the popcorn and it just makes me nauseous. A movie has to look REALLY good for me to go see it and pay out the whazzoo.

I knew that Mad Money was a movie I wouldn’t go see in the theater. No offense to Katie Holmes what-so-ever, but I could tell it was a renter.

I finally rented it the other night, and I know you all have already discussed this movie thoroughly, but I thought I would give my two cents. I convinced my husband to watch it with me and well, I thought it was cute. Katie’s part was interesting though and I am very curious to see if she ever plays a part like that again. She was a bit, okay a lot, dingy and out in left field. But that was the part she was supposed to play and she did it well.

Read the rest below.

I was a little surprised by the ending of the movie. Here I was, thinking they had all learned their lesson about wanting more than they could have and the whole stealing thing, and then at the very end they are swimming in barrels of money. :D Pretty funny.

Now, I am the kind of gal that can watch a great movie over and over again, but seeing this movie once is enough for me.

It will be interesting to see what, if any, movie roles Katie takes down the road. If she is as good as everyone is saying she will be in “All My Sons“, then I think maybe some better roles will come her direction. I like Katie in dramas, or maybe a romantic comedy. I can’t wait to see what twists and turns her career takes over the years.

If you care to discuss again, what did you think of the movie? If you are bored with this topic…then carry on. :D

I had just the opposite effect, I figured they’d never see it again and they were trying to teach us all don’t want more. I loved this outcome, it wasn’t something you’d expect. I’m so sick of watching movies that you don’t have to think because you already know how they’ll end. I will eventually be buying this movie. :)

Julie: Glad to hear you are like normal people!! I have not seen it yet. I am still not convinced it is worth the time to watch it. It is just a bad sounding plot to me. It has nothing to do with who is acting.

It hasn’t come out here yet, but I got a chance to see it thanks to a friend. I thought the movie was fun and Katie’s character was so cute and every time she came on the screen, I found myself dancing with her. :)

I also like the ending, I didn’t expect it to end like that…overall it was a good movie.

Hanna.. it sounds like a really feelgood movie. bet katie doesn’t deserve all that criticism she got .rather see an enjoyable movie anyday than an academy award yawn can’t wait to see it .

I saw the movie and I loved it. It is not my usual plot but I wanted to support Katie. Plus I love Queen Latifa, Keaton and of course Ted Danson. Critics are a bit irrational when it comes to Tom and Katie so it was not surprising that they criticised her when her role was such a simple one, with no demands, very well executed.

Katie has expressed interest in doing a period drama, hopefully she gets to do that. I would like her in such a role. She has lots of talent, that is why she consistently got mainly positive reviews in DC for six years.

**having some trouble posting, my apologies if this is duplicated**

I thought it was a cute movie. I loved Katie’s curly hair in it, and thought she did a good job. I have to be honest though and say that I don’t think she “owned” the part. She was a good ditz, but it’s not one of her roles that I can say “I can’t imagine another actress doing this part”. Overall, I enjoyed the movie though. :)
(I enjoy almost anything Katie’s in!)

I really enjoy seeing Katie in dramatic roles the best, as I’ve said before, it’s where she shines! GO, Wonder Boys, Abandon - all stellar performances (even though the first two are actually classified as “dark comedies”) and films I’ve watched over and over.

MM probably isn’t something I’ll watch several times, but I do have it on DVD, and might pull it out once and a while. I had to chuckle, because when the film initially premiered, a friend sent me a Mad Money California Lottery ticket with Katie, Diane and Q. Latifah on it! I’d never seen Katie on a lottery ticket before! lol!!

Out of curiousity, what is everyone’s favorite Katie movie/performance?

Katie , i so agree with you; kh really shines in drama roles. love PIECES OF APRIL ABANDON. liked her role in the GIFT, spoilt and sophisicatedly trashy, if you know what i mean. it was a nice change from the college girl roles that she seemed unable to escape from. remember in ABANDON , that scene where katie was being intervied for the job and they showed close ups of her face. that face was so beautiful thats why i tend to go on and on like a broken record about her current look . thats not really her. hope someone will give her a chance one day to display her hidden talent. last sunday night wonder boys was on tv as was MI.1. feast!

Yeah, Katie is great in drama roles. And my fave are Pieces of April, The Gift and Go. I’ haven’t seen Abandon yet, I’ll definitely pick it up next time I’m at the video store.

I liked Mad Money, it’s not a deep thinking movie but it’s a good popcorn flick.

I was ho-hum on Katie’s ditzy character at first but she won me over with her heart and loyalty in what she did for Nina at the most crucial moment. Imo Katie did a good job in setting her character Jackie up as the ditzy and possably the weak link of the criminal enterprise and then giving the suprise that Jackie was deeper and stronger then expected.

The ending was a suprise.. Crime may not pay but loyalty does . I just loved it =)

Nina (Queen Latifah) to Bridget ( Diane Keaton) : ” You sneaky criminal mastermind !!”

*Katie* my favourite Katie movies are Abandon and Pieces of April. She is dramatic and excels in those roles. Suri seems like a drama queen too. Now I see where she got that from. LOL.

Annie, you are so right about Katie’s close ups in movies. She looks so beautiful, I do enjoy them and I had never even realised till you mentioned it. I know make up does wonders but she does have beautiful close ups.

  • *Katie*
    Jun 27, 2008 at 6:37 am

Annie - yes, I love that scene at the interview, especially her cool demeanor when she’s talking about Mrs. Castleman (her high school guidance counselor), the editing of the question/answers was phenominal, also loved her answer to “how many pennies do you think it would take to fill this room?” The writer of Abandon actualy named the character Katie after KH, he had her in mind when writing the script. He never imagined he’d actually get her, but it was his hope that he would. That’s the reason that the character’s name is Katie as well.

I also understand what you mean about The Gift. I don’t think Katie had ever played such an “adult” role before, and she nailed it with precision.

I remember seeing her on SNL, and enjoying it but thinking that she just doesn’t quite have the comedic timing to really pull off roles like this. Though I’ve been a fan of Katie’s for a long time, I think I’ve always been able to maintain a sort of impartiality about her work being able to distinguish what I thought was just OK from the truly spectacular. I admit definite bias towards her work, but it helps me see the forest through the trees so to speak. ;)

Lauren, there’s no mistaking that make-up does wonders in movies, but she really is that beautiful in person. I haven’t seen her in person in a few years, but back when I did, I have to admit, she was breathtaking.

Strictly based on Katie’s performance, Abandon is the movie I wouldn’t want to see anyone else in her role, and I probably wouldn’t have seen the movie without her being in it. (I would have missed a great movie, but it is the truth). I also wouldn’t want to have seen her replaced in GO or Wonder Boys, but both movies have such terrific actors in them that I enjoy the projects as a whole, even the scenes without Katie in them. Wonder Boys was terribly undersold in the beginning, with the movie’s poster featuring only a washed up photo of Michael Douglas, but once the DVD came out, they got it right adding Tobey Maguire and KH to the poster and it drew more people in. Michael Chabon (who’s book the movie is based on) is a fabulous writer. I read his book far before the movie came out, and loved it. I was a bit woried about the movie (normally if you love the book, you’ll hate the movie) but screenwriter/adaptor Steve Kloves is the best in the business IMO. Steve does his best to stick as close to the book as possible and trimming out as few details as possible. (After all, it’s those charming details that made the book a success in the first place!) He’s also worked on several of the Harry Potter movies, adapting the books into screenplays. He’s definitely on my “I want to meet/work with” list!!

For me, GO was a chance to see 2 of my favorite actresses work together in one film. I grew up watching Sarah Polley on TV (she’s a Canadian actress, and we always had 2 Canadian channels on our TV). I don’t care much for Canadian movies, but will watch anything with Sarah in it. So the change to see her in an American highly publicized film is rare. The whole movie’s great though, every cell of the film!

OK, I promise to stop rambling now, LOL :)
(Once I start talking movies, it’s hard to stop!)

Oh no *Katie* Don’t stop, I was enjoying all the rumbling :)

I didn’t know that the character in Abandon was based on Katie. Listening to you (roll eyes), reading your post, I do now regret that the bruhaha of all this Tomkat hoopla has overshadowed her career. Now I do remember that she has nailed some roles. Not that I never thought that before, but with so much going on, it is easy to forget that side of her. It is my hope that in the next few years, we get to see more of the actress side. She has all the time in the world. After broadway, I hope she gets a super good role, in a period or a drama.

I am going to get out those DVDs and do some catching up with popcorn this weekend.

I enjoyed reading your posts too, Katie.

I don’t know whether this is true or not, but I also read that, Christopher Nolan wrote the character Rachel Dawes with Katie Holmes in mind?!

I think the broadway role is what she needs right now and when that is over hopefully she gets a good role in a movie.

    Thanks Tia & Lauren. :)

I hadn’t heard that about the Batman movie, would be cool if it was true though. :) I’m not too familiar with the Batman franchise (other than Katie’s film) was there a Rachel Dawes in the comic books/past story line, or was the character entirely created for the newer sagas?
It will be interesting to see how the “new” Rachel compares to Katie! ;)

Lauren, I wouldn’t call the Katie character in Abandon “based on” KH (because that character, a little off her rocker to say the least), but the writer wrote the part with hopes of Katie playing it. It’s even the reason that the character’s name is Katie. Katie’s a pretty good singer, so I had to chuckle when the character Katie was supposed to sing badly. I remember an interview with with KH that she had to be shown what the director meant by singing badly. (because, lets face it, if you’ve got the pipes to sing, you dont want to damage them by using them incorrectly, plus just like those of us who can’t sing, I imagine those that can would have a hard time singing badly.)

Hope you are enjoying your movie marathon Lauren.

I definitely agree with you Tia - I hope that Boadway brings Katie some meaty roles again! :)

Katie.. i remember seeing kh sing a few times on dawsons , the time she sang in front of the bikies , another time i think she sang a country western song , but i did’nt like how she sang in ”the beauty pageant” that was so bad , but thankfully she made up for it ,in the way she looked , but she actually sings ok.

Yeah, the band she sang with (Charlie’s band) was a real local band called Feel Love Fury. They’re quite a good band but are no longer together. It’s funny because they just sort-of “put” Chad Michael Murray (Charlie) as the lead singer, even though he really can’t sing, lol. Katie never got along with Chad, thinking he had air-for-brains. I didn’t really know Chad well on DC, but have gotten to know him a lot better over the last few years (One Tree Hill currently films in our town) and whole-heartedly agree with her. He seemed real nice the first few months I knew him, but since then, we actually joke around when he actually does do something nice (like take a photo/sign an autograph) because it’s a rare occasion.

*Katie*, here is what I found from IMDB Batman Begins- Trivia.

    # Christopher Nolan wrote in the character Rachel Dawes with Katie Holmes in mind. No other actresses were in serious consideration; it was hers to lose.

    # Unlike most characters on the movie, Rachel Dawes, played by Katie Holmes, doesn’t exist in “Batman” or any other DC Comics’ series. She was created by director Christopher Nolan and screenwriter David S. Goyer.
