Details About Tom Cruise’s Cameo in Tropic Thunder
More and more details about Tom Cruise’s cameo in “Tropic Thunder” are coming out. Here’s what PEOPLE is reporting:
Rather than play his typical, boyishly charming good guy, Cruise delivers an apparently memorable cameo in which he’s craggy, fat, bald, vulgar, hairy-chested – and playing an ungrateful studio boss, reports The New York Times, which also says that Cruise’s opening line in the movie comedy is enough to guarantee it an R-rating when it opens Aug. 15.
His opening line guarantees an R-rating? Sounds very intriguing.
Cruise will not be listed in any marketing materials or listed in the credits. They are also saying that his photo in the fat suit will not be made public, but of course there was that internet leak, in which Cruise’s spokespeople responded with, “Mr. Cruise’s appearance was supposed to be a surprise for his fans worldwide. [Paparazzi] have ruined what should have been a fun discovery for moviegoers“.
The preview reaction to Cruise’s cameo on Tuesday is being described as rapturous. Which means movie goers were ecstatic about it. This is great news for Tom!
The movie is still in the rough cut stage and Ben Stiller told the crowd that was gathered to see the show, “If you have any suggestions, feel free to post them directly on the Internet.” Oh that Ben is so funny.

I guess you can’t even tell it is tc with the make up and everything. I think that is what will make his part even better!

I am looking at his picture too and thinking, hot hot hot or what. I like his hair shorter too but he is rather dashing in that picture.
So much has been said about the cameo that am literally counting the days to August 15th. Apparently even the screening audience were wowed!

I love the new administrator, she really does her job of finding new cruise news and really gets this place updated plenty! I love it! This is the way it should be. I’m still waiting for Katie Holmes.com to link up the pics of Suri at the park, cause I like that I can zoom into them and make the pics super huge, I wanna get a closer look at Suri’s face. She looked quite beautiful from the pictures that I saw already!

It’s a cameo isn’t it? I’m not being a ‘hater’, it’s just that it wouldn’t be too hard for TC to mess up the performance.
Speaking of cameos, I really loved the fact that Hitchcock cameoed in most films he made; every time I watch one, I keep my eye out for him.

I think Hitchcock showed up in every single one of his films. Some, I could not find him, but that is what I have read. On the cameo, with all the stuff going on in the media, this might not have been the best time for TC to do ugly. It just doesn’t seem as if it will come over funny. I could be wrong, but timing and image are everything in showbiz

Hi mom - yep, I have read that he appeared in every one, but I haven’t been able to spot him in some either. It’s kinda funny, like playing “Where’s Wally”.

Every single review of Tropic Thunder has said that Cruise’s cameo in that movie is hilarious. Outright hilarious!

Hi bee. Now I may have to have a Hitchcock movie weekend and try to spot him again. what a strange man.
The cameo may well be funny, I just wonder how it will affect TC and crew and the CoS who are all struggling against a tidal wave of bad press at the moment. Now if he could have shown up in a small but great part say in a movie like 21, that might have been the ticket to the start of an interesting come-back

Tropic thunder is better than 21. I can wait to see him, especially since his cameo will is making fun of Redstone. I am not one to talk about scientology but hey, whatever its struggles at the moment and whoever its enemies, I doubt it is going to shut down any time soon. Besides, I have more respect for it because it seems to have maintained more diginity than its vicious and vindictive former members. After three years of systematic attacks TC has not crumbled, if that is because of his beliefs, then I have more respect for them.

wow. Since you brought it up, that was pretty vitriolic there. I wonder if you have even read any of the former members stories. ex-scien kids are very polite on their website, but their stories well that is something else now but since this thread is about the cameo, I will say that if it is making fun of a power player like Redstone, that would seem as if TC is pretty much burning his bridges (no pun intended) behind him. I thought they had ‘lunch’ the other day.

I only mentioned the movie 21 because it had a great start at the box office and that is truly what TC needs at the moment if he is going to make a success of his floundering Movie Production company. He can not afford any losses at this point. I think this moviePersonally I am just not interested at the current time about a movie about Hitler. I am wanting entertaining and comedic films at the moment. Already too much hate and sadness in the world. I find myself looking more for escapism. What he could really use right now is a great action, fun type film that would hopefully draw some of his fans into the theaters. I am not so much a fan although I have enjoyed some of his past movies.

bumblebeej, apparently it “isn’t just a cameo. He’s basically the villain.”

It is a cameo and TC gets no credits. He made the movie before ‘making’ up with Restone. Also, it is Restone who insulted him and later back tracked on his words saying they were quoted out of context. TC has nothing to lose and has been doing fine without Redstone. His studio will be fine thank you. He is a resilient person who can look past a couple of movies not doing so well. I am sure he did not restart UA thinking everything will be rosy and peaches.

Not to forget, it is very rich for posters who spread hate all over the internet to notice how much hate and sadness already exists.

Lauren, I don’t know if you read the link I posted but the person who has seen the movie has said its not a cameo. A cameo is done in a day and a true cameo is really one appearance? Tom was shooting for a few days and Jack Black himself has said it’s slightly larger than a cameo, more like a supporting part.

I think the reason he is not credited is because they wanted it to be a surprise but from that link he is def credited at the end of the movie.

I love Jack Black! He is such a GREAT comedian! The words that fly out of his mouth just crack me up! He has a dry sense of humor and you really have to understand that type to understand the things he says. HAHA Just thinking about him cracks me up!!!!

Define hate Lauren. I have never said I was a total fan of TC, however, hate?? Very strong mean sounding word. I don’t know him, therefore logically, I can’t hate or love him. I have enjoyed some of his past movies. I have stated an opinion that with some of his recent troubles in his career–basically burning his friendship with SS and now toasting his relationship with Redstone, and the performance of Lions for Lambs which overall wasn’t a bad movie-just didn’t make any $$, I do believe his production company UA is really needing a hit right at the moment to keep him bankable for opening a movie. This movie, first of all, is not completed and one of the main scenes still must be shot although the cast and crew are disbanded. This will cost around $10 million to get done, then there is the expensive promotion and the timing of the release… So many factors. He may be able to pull it off. In my opinion, which I am just as free to have as you are, I don’t think it is going to happen for him. Next year, in February as I said before, the actual proof will be in the movie if it releases and it performance. Let’s wait and see, shall we? This is not hate as you seem to think, but discussion. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

Who ever heard of a Tom Cruise movie being delayed like this one has?? Come on. He is one of the top-grossing movie stars of ALL time. I hope this cameo/part thing works well for him because in order to get financing for some of his projects at UA, he has to still prove he is a bankable star. From all I can tell, movie companies come and go in Hollyweird faster than anything. Every movie I see, generally has several production companies banking it.

I have a lot to say but I don’t want to lower myself.
Julie would like to keep this polite and I respect that and I am a huge fan of Tom’s, that is why I am here. Anything else seems trite to me.
But I will say this. Why would anyone come to a fanbased site if you are NOT a fan?

I saw Tropic Thunder and TC stole the movie effortlessly. RDJ was also great as were the other performers but it was tom you were looking for cause he was hilarious.
Pure entertainment, just sit back and enjoy the show!
