Audience Comments on Katie Holmes’ Performance
There are no official reviews out for Katie Holmes’ performance in ‘All My Sons’ and most likely there won’t be, until after October 16th. There are however, some great audience reactions and In Touch Weekly was there to get it all. Here’s what a few people had to say about Katie:
“I thought Katie was excellent!” Alexa Haines, 22, from Philadelphia. “I’ve liked her since Dawson’s Creek, but now she has such stage presence; I never would have known! I’m an actress and I felt her emotional journey was very on par. I think she’ll do really well. She had a great connection with the actors.”
Check out the rest of the reviews below.
Jen Wilson, 29, from New York wasn’t quite sure what to expect. She tells In Touch Weekly, “Honestly, it was much better than I thought she was going to be. I didn’t really love her character but she performed really well. If she was nervous, you couldn’t tell. I definitely didn’t notice any mistakes.” She adds, “But what I was thinking most of the time was ‘how did she get muscles like that?’”
And last but not least, Andrew Morton who wrote ‘Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography’ had this to say, “She handled the stage and moved very well. She was a little stiff at times, but she was up against some big Broadway stars.”
What a big night this was for Katie. I am definitely looking forward to hearing more about her performance. Now if only I could get to New York to see it myself!

Oh please, Andrew Morton, what’s he doing now collecting material for a new book? There’s been great pics of Tom and Katie on Gossip Girls, and still the paps are there , recording her coming and going from the theatre, really like some of the outfits, green jacket and scarf and striped black and white shirt tucked in black pants and long black cardi. One thing is for sure Katie is so happy when she’s with Tom.

I am truly stumped as to why some people expressed shock that KH performed well on stage…..I mean, I just do not get it. She did well b/c she is an actress for Pete’s sake who has acted for many years now on both TV and film. It would be almost impossible for her to fail miserably. I am happy she is following her dreams!

I always thought Katie would be good in All My Sons because Ithink she has a flair for drama, although I read that her role called for her to express herself in in different ways. I’ve always believed that Katie has never really been given the chance to display her real talent, perhaps after this people might look at her differently in terms of movies. It was so nice seeing her in longer hair ,her current hairstyle is letting her down, its a shame.

I saw the pictures too and boy she is just about the cutest munhckin ever. She also seems very mischiveous. She is so lively and her enthusiasm for the toys would make you think she has none. I just love her.
On the reviews, I must say that most people had conveniently forgotten that Katie is an actress and an excellent actress. For the last three years, her personal life has eclipsed her career mainly because a lot was happening there whereas she only did one movie in that period. Hopefully after this, it will be back to focussing on her career. She is a very good actress, she carried DC for six years and hardly anyone questioned her credentials. It was a general consensus that she was a very good actress. Earlier movies like ‘pieces of April’ also showed what she can do.
I am glad she took to theatre, now she can silence her critics once and for all.

Julie, there is a review from Broadway world.com
‘…..And then there is Holmes, who many suspected as being cast as some sort of publicity stunt. She has certainly brought much publicity to the show, much of it not centered on the show itself, but from the moment she walks onstage it becomes quite clear that this is an actress cast for her talent, not her ability to put butts in the seats. Her portrayal of Ann is very layered and poignant, and she powerfully anchors the audience from getting too adrift in the Keller drama. The performance should clearly serve as a revelation for her most ardent critics, who still see her as the girl with the crooked smile sitting on a dock near the creek.
This version of “All My Sons” is like magic captured in a bottle or, in this case, within The Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. It’s a masterful portrayal of a masterwork, performed by a cast working at the peaks of their respective powers for a director who embraces the material bravely and carefully. Bravo.

I was sure that Katie would do well on Broadway! Bravo!! Great review from Broadway World! Did you read on Fox news that a group of about 20 people wore masks at the theater and chanted “free Katie”?
They also were against Scientology. Unbelievable! Those people need to get a real passion.

Thanks so much Anne,
That review brought tears of relief to my eyes. It’s not that I don’t think she is good I think she is very good I just wanted someone else tp say it and I think this review is very good.
Bravo Katie Holmes, John Lithgow, Patrick Wilson and Dianne.
I read a bad review at All That Chat but the reviewer does not even like the play itself and complains about Katie, Dianne, and Patrick. But a coulpe of the replys don’t agree with the reviewer.

I’m so pleased for Katie that the public who’s seen All My Sons enjoyed her performance. I’d like to see her recognized as the really good actress she is rather than a tabloid staple. This is what her career should be about.
The big tell is when the professional reviews come out next month. That can strongly influence whether a play has a profitable run or just so-so run. I hope the reviews for all the cast members are good. That would be a great boon to the production since well reviewed drama’s tend to do well.
Lets just hope that Tom keeps his mouth shut and lets Katie shine rather than creating some tabloid hoopla. I love the fact that the focus is on her acting rather than just her relationship with Tom.
Also, checked out those pics of Suri on JJ. She’s just too adorable. It’s great to see her smiling and having a wonderful time!! Tom looks good too, although I could do without the “high heels” he always seems to wear lately. Obviously his height bothers him, which seems silly. You would think he’d have more confidence than that! In any case, Suri is just beautiful!!

Katie’s a very ambitious woman and, if the critics’ reviews are positive next month, her career could take off. I don’t, however, believe that there’s room in her life for a highly successful career and marriage to Tom Cruise. He didn’t handle Nicole’s success at all well, as we know.

Katie is a very good actress. She has always been. People only started questioning her chops when she started dating Tom. There is an element of bias in most criticisms against her. Usually they are from people who have a problem with her husband’s faith. I am glad that inspite of everything, she has proved her critics wrong. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a great career for her. I am positive even the official reviews will be just as fantastic as the fan reviews. Top theatre critics are already hailing her performance.
I have no doubt that Katie can have a successful career and a successful marriage to the man she loves. What would be the use of having a career when you have no one to share that success with? Tom too can handle her success, he is her biggest champion and you can even see the difference in her disposition since he arrived in NY.
As for the so called ‘high heels’, most men wear shoes with thick soles, just that no one pays attention to such details. If you doubt it, scour the internet and check it out yourself. Tom Cruise is obviously under scrutny all the time, so you think it is a crime when he does not wear super flat shoes.
I commend him for his positive attitude all the time. You never see him in a whiny or angry. He always has a smile on his face and seems to enjoy his life to fullest. Good for him.

I wasn’t going to mention it, but since Lauren did, I can honestly say that I don’t know any man that wears thick soled heels. I come from Italian stock and that is plain tacky. But, you know what they say, “money don’t buy cla$$.” And, the stark white tennis shoes are another topic of discussion in European culture too. Europeans laugh at it.
But I digress. Sorry about that. LOL.

Which critics are hailing her performance? I have not read any professional reviews about the play. From what I understand, those reviews won’t be out until next month.
Also, Katie is NOT the lead in the play. Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow are.
Julie, there are no reviews of Cruise’s performance that night as well. He apparently caused quite a stir when he showed up that night at the theater and got a standing ovation from the audience. He even bowed!

Lauren,
Theater critics have not reviewed the play or Katie’s performance. Saying that they have is silly since it’s a fact that is easily checkable on the internet. The only “reviews” we’ve seen have been from theatergoers who have attended the previews. That’s it. The critics will not weigh in until the official opening of the play next month.
I’m a fan of Katie’s as well and I’m rooting for her as much as the next guy, but to exagerate the situation to make a point is silly IMHO.

Neither do I, tyler! It’s well known that Tom uses lifts and it’s very obvious when pictures of his shoes are shown, especially those white sneakers they’ve been showing online recently. Hey, it doesn’t bother me! Whatever floats his boat! What I find strange is that you would think Tom would have more confidence and self esteem than that and not be so sensitive about his height. It’s not as if his height is a choice he made! It’s determined by genetics.
He marries tall women. All three of his wives have been tall, so you’d think he would have made peace with his physical shortcomings (that was a pun) by now! Height has never been an issue for me. Some men are tall in stature but are very small men in the way they think and act. Height is just a physical characteristic. It’s the depth of man’s soul, heart and character that really matters to me.

Well….maybe to some, Anon, but in the real world where tickets are bought and sold and careers are made or broken, there’s a little more to it than that. LOL!!
Thus far and from what I’ve read, some theatergoers thought she was really good and I’m pleased for her. I’ve always thought she was a bit underrated based on her performance in Pieces of April. I think the prudent thing is to allow Katie the time to work out the kinks while the show is in previews and wait for the professional reviews to come in. Overstating the response to the previews is unnecessary. JMO of course!

My cousin saw KH perform over the weekend! She said she did a GREAT job, but needs to project more. Not having seen the show, I would agree….KH always speaks in such a low toned voice. Get more confidence girl!! (Being miked does not always help!). She said the leads were fantastic, simply fantastic. Although KH was not a lead, she held her own, and did a wonderful job! She did mention as well that KH is so skinny and looks unwell in person. Why wont that girl eat more???? Does she think she looks sexy or healthy being that underweight? My cousin said that many patrons in the audience were clammering on about how severely frail she appeared. I hope the media tells her to pack on some pounds……surely she sees that she is too thin.

It’s troubling that Katie is so dependent on Tom’s presence to show the spark of life in her demeanor. Why doesn’t he move into the American Felt Building with her then?
Katie doesn’t even look to be having fun with Suri when Tom’s not around her!
I know their ‘religion’ plays a major role in their life together, but Tom should be paying more attention to his family - or Katie might just pine away without him by her side!
Remember Tom’s Nazi movie is coming out at Christmas time so this Broadway play is a good showcase for his arrogant movie-star swaggering self as evidenced in his behavior on the opening night of the play.
I guess we can all be relieved he didn’t jump up and down on his theater seat proclaiming how extraordinary Katie’s performance was!
Now wonder Katie loves him so!

You know TC is far from Mr Perfect, but you guys have a go at him for just about everything, half of the things written about him are exagerated or untrue and deep down you all know it. Look at Anabel she read somewhere they’re staying at seperate hotels and she believed it, well I don’t, as for his shoes I didn’t even notice until someone brought it up at a previous post months back I’ve seen a lot of guys wear shoes with thick heels, it’s the style of the shoe, he’s 5′7, maybe he’s not tall for a man but he’s not short either, we know how much Katie loves her high heels, but she should’nt wear 5 inch heels when she’s with him, she does’nt need them, there’s beautiful lower heeled shoes around . I do agree with Anabel though when shesays that Katie lights up when she’s with him, to be honest he must be good in the sack , that’s all I want to say .

Sep 23, 2008 at 6:18 am
That shows how different we all are. Can’t stand Jude Law and Clive Owen, Ewwwww. I would punch JL in the face if I met him LOL. Sleezy bugger that one.
No one expects every one to like Tom Cruise. He ahs enough people who like him. He seems well loved wherever he goes. Whether it is his ability to work the crowd, who cares. He has more friends in hollywood than any one. Some people act like they have a gun to their heads to love him. You don’t have to even like him. It is OK.
I know it must hurt even some so called ‘Katie fans’ that her broadway debut went really well. Some people couldn’t wait for her to fail so that they could clap with glee and say if she left her husband, she would do better. Look at how many here who call themselves fans but were happy when rumours were rife that tickets were not selling well.
On that note, I will say that arguing about Tom’s heels is as sillier than anything I know *wink.
On a sadder note, I love Italians and everything Italian. Knowing that someone vindictive and …..like ‘Tyler’ is Italian has just ruined my fantasy of that country, its people and (especially) its men. Now maybe I will have to exorcise that but it will take a while. *sad sigh.
I always thought they were the least vindictive people I knew. OK. I based that on the few Italians I knew in school and Franscesco from work (The most gorgeous, kindest, beautiful person I ever met, yes I have a massive crush on him). Oh and that gorgeous football team of theirs.
Why oh why……off to cry in alone.

I am glad Katie’s previews are going well. She seemed so happy months ago to be starting a new project.
I don’t come from Italian stock and I find Cruise’s lifts and sparkling white shoes tacky. It reeks of insecurity. Seriously, if he is the ‘Greatest movie star in the world’, why is he concerned about his height and has to wear lifts?
I know other couples where the wife wears heels and, even without the heels she still towers over her hubbie, but he is not wearing lifts like Cruise does. I think it goes back to the fact that those men are secure in who theyare and know there is a mutual feeling of love and respect between them and their wives.
I am not saying with any authority what is happening between these two, because I don’t know them, but when men wear lifts like that, it reeks of insecurity. And we all know Cruise loves the lights and that is how he makes his living! It is also a very fickle world he lives and works in.

Can you provide proof of that, Lauren? Perhaps and article or a link? I’ve read the Variety article and it simply does not say that anywhere. I’ve also searched google and found nothing anywhere making that claim.
I’m so pleased that the play was 98% sold out during the first 5 previews which is why I don’t understand your two extreme exaggerations in this thread! Can’t you just be happy for what Katie’s has accomplished, rather than embellishing it? I really don’t understand!!
Generally, musicals are the top draw on Broadway. In terms of straight plays, Equus is also doing very, very well. It’s far too premature to make unfounded claims like that when the show has just begun previews, especially with no back up! It’s a huge disservice to Katie!! She’s accomplished quite a bit already! I see no need to embellish it!
Just my opinion!

Lauren,
I just located where you might have gotten your information. The show is not ON TARGET to be the “biggest selling play”, it’s in THE RUNNING. Very different things in my opinion. In the running means that it is on a short list of plays that COULD possibly be the top play, but I still feel it’s way to premature to say it’s ON TARGET to be the top play. One is almost a definite and the other states it as a possiblility. IMHO, you’re reading far to much into that line and building it up to be something it’s has not yet become.
I WANT to see Katie’s play be the top play of the year, but I think overstating it does a disservice to Katie and the other cast members by putting too much pressure on the situation.
Still, I want to apologize for questioning your source. I now see where you got it from. Sorry!
Lauren

Apology accepted Charlotte Rose :) Your first post/attack really spooked me.
On that note, I find it strange that any percieved exaggerations of Katie’s achievements are such a big crime to you. Yet as a fan you never questioned the articles that said the sales were slow even when the ticket site and broadway way site said the contrary. You were OK to go along with it.
It is rich that when you think I have exaggerated her positives, you attack me ferociously. I find that weird for a fan. So many untruths and negative exaggerations are made about Katie on this site, you rarely come out to combat them like you have come out about exaggerations of the positives to rebutt them. I am sorry but am confused about your way of seeing things.
I appreciate your efforts to correct any exaggerations on my part by I will tell you that I only repeat what I have read from reputable sources and granted some of these may exaggerate too. Where I can, I do quote the sources. That said, I do not believe it does a disservice to Katie in any way. On that nte negative stories that actually do a diservice to her do attack them sometime when you notice that they are exaggrated *wink.
I am a fan of Katie and obviously I am excited. She is doing well on broadway. Biggest play or biggest run, who cares. I am not running articles for time magazine. In any case Katie is long over due for some exaggerated positive stories. The fact is that at the moment it is doing better than other plays in its genre even Equus which the naysayers said was doing much better.

Annie, I saw that picture with the cross but I don’t think it is a cross. There are jewels or something on 3 points and I thought it almost looked like an upside down cross or plus sign..not sure. Definitely not being worn as a Christian symbol as she has declared herself a practicing Scientologist. Too much info out here on the net to believe the two can mix in any way. It was however, a cute necklace and I am more interested in this play thing at the moment. I think she has done all the hard work and put in a great amount of her time and effort and I hope it pays off big for her.

concerned mom,
I agree that Katie is not wearing a cross. As you said, it looks like a plus sign! A cross would have a longer vertical bar and the horizontal bar would be positioned higher. I think it’s simply a very pretty piece of decorative jewelry, not a Christian symbol!
Lauren
Sep 23, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Cross or plus sign, her beliefs are private even from her husband. I am glad Tom has since learnt not to share his beliefs. However good they have been for him, sharing beliefs is dangerous and opens one to bigotry. If Katie thinks scientology is good, then well and good for her. She is not the first person to change to her husband’s faith. Many people do it. May be they see some good things in the faith, may be they want to make the spouse happy. Who knows. May be she mixes them. They do celebrate Christmas after all. Remember Tom dressing up as Santa?

Lauren,
I will simply say that I did not attack you, ferociously or otherwise and I resent the fact that you are again exaggerating. I simply pointed out your two distortions of the facts. But then, my post is here for all to see. I stand by it with the exception of asking you to prove your source.
Equus is presently the top selling play. That is a provable fact. In addition, there is no critical acclaim for AMS. It has not been reviewed by the critics as yet. Theatergoers seem to really like it and Katie’s performance and I’m pleased about that. Those statements are FACTS. I sincerely hope AMS overtakes Equus in the box office. No one will be happier than me.
As far as the rest of your post, I have no interest in getting into a point by point disagreement with you even though I disagree with just about everything you’ve said. I feel as though I’m being baited and frankly, I’m just not interested.
I stand by my statements that you exaggerated the facts. I’m confident that anyone searching for the facts will agree.
Facts are facts. End of story.

I agree, Mary and never stated that there were. A show is never reviewed by the critics in previews, but then again, that was NOT the issue. The issue was that AMS was not critically acclaimed as Lauren claimed, since it has not been reviewed by critics. That’s all there was to it.
Lauren,
When I stated that AMS was not doing well in ticket sales, my comments were based on the information available from several sources. When updated information was released by Variety and it was determined that AMS is selling well, I stated that I was pleased for Katie and the rest of the cast.
Your apology is accepted.

Check for yourself, annie. The pictures on Just Jared are very clear and can be enlarged to show the detail. It’s either a plus sign or an X, depending on the way you look at it. It’s definitely not a cross though.
Just saying….and I won’t bring it up again either.

The “thoroughbred” actors, as Lithgow described himself and Wiest, have been very gracious to say the least.
